Port Adelaide is the only AFL Women’s expansion team to have yet appointed a senior coach, but that’s set to change, with Power insiders saying they will announce their inaugural coach in the next fortnight.

And it appears a current AFLW head coach has emerged as a possibility for the job.

Despite speculation that Crows superstar Erin Phillips is in the frame for the role – along with current head coaches in the SANFLW — it’s South Australian Steve Symonds – who is contracted at Collingwood for another season — who has emerged as a key name firmly in the mix.

Collingwood head coach Steve Symonds’ family remains in Adelaide.

Symonds helped establish Norwood’s inaugural SANFL women’s program and coached the Redlegs to two grand finals and the 2017 premiership before moving to AFLW. When Symonds accepted the Magpies role in 2019, his family made the decision to stay behind in Adelaide.

Since his tenure began, Symonds has led Collingwood into three successive finals campaigns.

An ideal scenario for Port could be to poach Symonds and appoint Phillips, who has previous coaching experience in the WNBA, as a playing-assistant coach – to give her time to become a coach in her own right.

That would be horrifying.

Not only do we need to worry about players being poached, now the coach.

He is contracted though -- but likely that means anything. Surely he wouldn't desert us, even though the fact his family is back in SA would be a drawing card.

Yep, it’s horrible. The Irish girls might also have Gaelic football commitments in that period. If this is a permanent change of date, we could lose them forever. I hate these constant changes to the AFLW. Why can’t the competition be left alone to settle down?

we lose sarah? i'm not sure i could cope...

she might not want to come anymore if she cant get a tan during the summer season.

Contracted, so likely we’ll have to agree to release him. I assume that would only happen if we have someone else lined up. Gowans would have been handy to still have on the books. McMillan seems to be rated highly internally with a gig as men’s assistant touted for ‘22 as part of an AFL /women’s coaching initiative. Is she ready for another promotion though?

Really sums up the year from hell for the team!
Pretty much everything that could go wrong, has.

Apart from the on field injuries / Covid.....
Losing our head of womans football early in the year (although burger is highly rated).
Losing senior assistant half way through the year, now a big chance to lose the coach as well.
On top of that, as i said earlier i see the change to the schedule for next year as being basically be a wasted year for the team.

Rowe being suspended for round 1 will basically mean she is only here for 9/10 games....with a change to the dates i wouldn't be surprised if she gives it a miss and stays home.

Based on this, i really wouldn't be surprised if older players jump ship to try and get a premiership.

Sorry to be doom and gloom.....

This is very doom and gloom. But it was a season from hell for us, and it looks like the pain is set to continue.

Well if Symonds has no intention of looking to return to SA, and coach PA, he should come out and say so. If the silence is deafening, then l would imagine he is seriously looking at jumping ship and returning to SA....

So all of this raises the spectre of how much the game is in growth mode (e.g. loyalty) vs making our team better (e.g. trading)?!?!

reason i say this is that i think we're a fair way off the top 3/4 (crows, dees, bris & Freo) and i don't think we have the players to compete effectively with them.
So given this is expansion year, would you be prepared to let a few go to begin a rebuild ....or do you stick with them over improving the team?

The coaches decision may well dictate the clubs mindset on this.....

In an expansion year and quick turn around to next season, i think you try hanging on to all the players you have. Let the whole thing settle down to normal and re access for the 2023 season re players draft trade etc.
Next years results are a little irrelevant in my view given all the movement.

It wont be one year, it will be probably the next 2-3 that are compromised (draft wise).
Even this year they added extra picks for the lower clubs.....so with more dilution of talent, its going to be multiple years before it settles down (in my view).

I'm actually 50/50 on whether to hold or move this year.....

Steve built up our AFLW club culture around the word "Family" and the connections and love expressed within the playing group is ubiquitous. If he was to leave it wouldn't be a flippant decision on his behalf and you have to presume his blood family still being in SA the major factor along with his deep football connections. I don't want to him but if he did, I could only respect his decision.

Gosh i'm at the complete other end of the scale on this!!

Yes he has built the culture almost from the ground up.
He signed a 2 year deal last year....so obviously the family ties were not strong enough back then.
So to leave, with 1 year left on his deal and claim "family" is a complete smack in the face to all the players who have sacrificed to play for the club over this time.

It would leave a very sour taste on his time at the club IMO.
The faster the competition gets to full time professional the better as at the moment everyone can do what they want without any repercussions..

While there had been industry speculation that Collingwood coach Steve Symonds would return to his native South Australia to steer Port in their first season, he has committed to remain at the Magpies, who he has led to three consecutive finals series and where he remains contracted for next season.

That's a great football article all around!!

Good luck Lauren Arnell - I hope you land the new gig..... and I hope we smash Port everytime we meet. 😝

So happy Steve remains. 💓

Part of the HS article about Prespakis moving to Essendon, with some good news for us, regarding three of our players......

Clubs are permitted to allow for marketing and promotional payments of up to $100,000 under an Additional Services Agreement pool, with the top two players at each club excluded from that cap and permitted to earn as much as they can.

With stars Ellie Blackburn and Ash Riddell re-committing to the Western Bulldogs and North Melbourne respectively after big plays from Sydney, the Swans are also likely to miss out on Collingwood trio Sarah Rowe, Britanny Bonnici and Ruby Schleicher, all of whom had been on their radar to varying degrees.

I don’t think I’d survive the loss of those three.😱

A lot of shuffling this year. If Collingwood remains in tact, that's good. Hope the girls can win the flag next year because I love watching them. It's refreshing (touch wood) that they just don't have scandals. Like no drunken nights out where they get arrested, no bar fights, etc. If Chloe Molloy and Jordan de Goey swapped contracts, I'd be fine by that.

Going by social media posts it seems Rowe has been more in the forefront of the club’s promotions/partnerships recently, so perhaps she’s landed some of the promotional payments.

I think it will be the clubs who aren't 'raided' that will be contending. New clubs will be okay but difficult as most of the girls haven't been together.
