Man up Hawks supporters

Here's the deal - not one player left a single thing on the park tonight, you have great reason to be very, very proud of every single bloke who represented our club with class, endeavor and distinction.

We weren't good enough on the night - and you can come up with a million reasons why, I know I have already - but in a ferocious contest like that the only thing that matters is the final outcome.

I understand the need to vent - the frustration - I am gutted.

My challenge to my fellow Hawthorn supporting brethren is to honour the effort that those boys showed tonight by manning up.

Picking one moment out of a match and putting the blame on one scapegoat is not manning up, blaming the umpires is not manning up and attacking each other is not manning up.

Three months ago there was barely a ripple left on this board as the reality of Gilham, Roughead & Stratton being lost for the season set in, and a honourable appearance in the finals appeared a pipedream.

When the cold light of day hits, we will realise what a herculean effort it has been to miss a GF by so little with so much adversity.

Post about these boys with the respect they showed you in their performance tonight.
TAITA........ I have just stood up out of my chair and applauded you for that........... I completely agree, yes it was so very very close and the heart ache is terrible, but this moment now defines a great team. you gotta get back on the horse and keep going........

Well said TAITA.

Proud of the boys. Not only for their last game but for the entire season.

Nobody was giving us a chance. When injuries came our way, we were told it would be Hawthorn that will give up a top 4 spot. The boys showed grit and finished third. Fantastic effort.

To fall short of reaching the Grand Final by less than a kick is awesome.

The hurt will take time to heal, but so it should. It will make us better and stronger, physically and mentally.

Lets not sulk over this anymore. But let's not forget.

I love every single word TAITA..After a few to many I have to say that apart from 08 this is easily and by far and away the most satisfied that I have been with any Hawks year, I chose them to support in 89 and only started caring post 91...Anyway that was the hardest loss that I also have experienced/cared about, yes a million times worse than pf 01....So IMHO our second best year in 20 years concluded with our hardest to handle loss in 20 years...a very bitter ending but I am full of hope!...GO HAWKS!!

I'm no lover of the Hawks, as you might suspect from my allegiance, but I have a lot of respect for your footy club and I think there are a few more than a few Geelong supporters who share that sentiment. If there is one thing you can count on from a HFC team, it is 100% commitment. One can't do anything but respect that.

You'll be back up there next year, and may I say as a Geelong supporter that I can't get enough of Lance Franklin's amazing talents.

Nice gesture. Im not sure I would be so humble if the scenarios were reversed. In fact I dont think I spared a thought for Geelong losing in 08, I was so wrapped up in the euphoria of victory. Swings and roundabouts. We haven't lost one like that in a long while though. We have won our past 4 GF appearances, so you probably have to look back to the 84GF to find a such a crucial game that we let slip in such a way. I was 7 in 84 so the impact of the loss wasn't quite as a profound I have to say.

How long did the gut-rot stay in your stomach for after '08 because i'm not sure I can go through a full summer thinking about that loss?

Yeah that's my point SS - but you can argue about it until your arse turns blue mate - the scoreboard will never change.

We owe these blokes the respect to never say shoulda, woulda, coulda, or the umpires shoulda, woulda, coulda - because although they may privately - there is a long held mantra at Hawthorn - never complain, never explain.

The number 3 tonight reminded me of the other number 3 who probably coined the phrase.

The Hawthorn Football Club will be a much better place going forward if they have a beer, examine where they come from, what the goals where and what they achieved - and disregard the external influences that they have no control over.

Hawthorn Big Footy board would do well to do the same.

It's a lost opportunity - but win, lose or draw - as long as they leave everything on the park, that is all that can be asked.

Of course you are 100% right, but emotions are hard to curtail. It also hurts to know that we are in a premiership window and we literally did everything we could to win and we didn't. We were 2mins from playing off in a grand final and now we have to look 6months forward to a new 18 team season relying on Roughead being fit and available from Rd.1, Gilham to bolster our defence, our youngsters (who lets face it played out of their skins in 11) to improve and hope at the same time that Collingwood and Geelong fall back to the pack and that Carlton and West Coast dont improve too much. Couldn't we have just pinched a flag this year instead? :(

Still not over it ;)

Probably was upset about it for a couple of months but eventually I realised we were just outplayed on the day and that was that. It still burns, but it's ancient history now.

Sunday morning better than Saturday. Keep thinking over plays in my head (i.e. Gibson being held in the goal square by Brown, Puopolo and Rioli, easy set shots being missed, Guerrea touching the ball going out on the full etc). The only upside is that a preliminary final loss is easier to deal with than a grand final loss - I speak from experience there. Haha.

Not to mention..... can you imagine the media banging on and on all week about "REDEMPTION" for Geelong. It was bad enough in 09 (when it was only home and away games) but this would have been unbearable. If we are going to have a crack at them in a Grand Final again I would rather it was at full strength and with the same week off rest that they had.

Sunday morning was slightly better than Saturday morning. Still hurts though. Proud of the boys nonetheless.

Go Cats!

I can't believe people saying they wouldn't want to play the cats in a GF this week in case we get smashed etc....

I would love the Hawks to have beaten the pies on Friday and we get a shot at a flag and if that means we get smashed, well bad luck....

it also means we WON the prelim and our players get GF experience, plus that small point of possibly winning the Flag....

:eek::eek:

Good point bb231 ... second best season in twenty years ... 2008 > 2011 > 2001 > 2000,2007,1992,1993,1994 > 1996,2010

I hope we rebound in '12 like you guys did in '09. I also hope you guys grab your 3rd flag next weekend. You deserve it for the period that you have dominated. 3 flags would not only be an accurate representation of your record over the past 6 seasons but also put you in a bracket of teams in the top10 of the best ever.

The one word I took out of it was PROUD!

I have been proud of the guys all through this year and that didn't change at the end of the game last night.

Don't care what anyone else says and the what ifs.

I made my eldest son (9 year-old) watch a replay of the entire game yesterday. I made him aware of what a herculean effort ALL of our players put in. How we never gave up and what sort of football Hawthorn produce when the stakes are at their highest.

I'm proud, I'm passionate and yes I'm shattered but we'll be back to do it all again next year. My 9 year-old was out practicing after the replay, dreaming he was Buddy, Cyril or Hodgey....he's as proud of our mighty club as I am.

Well done Hawks

Well it's been a while since I have felt so low on a Monday morning
:( Trying not to read newspapers, listen to the radio or watch TV about the GF!!!!!

But is reflection I would have to say back when Gilham, Stratton and Roughhead were all injuired! I thought we might not make the final 8 - but to have won so many games and played really well in the finals, it has given me something to be happy about :)

I know Grand Finals are hard to come by - but I think we are in a good place and hope that we can start something special like the Cats will do this Saturday and what Brisbane done recently.

To feel so sad Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Today - makes me really understand how much I love the Hawks :)

Here here. If we are honest with ourselves the Hawks haven't dished out that much pain to us in recent history so we almost had it coming. Aside from the recent losses to Geelong which admittedly hurt and the finals to Freo ('10) and North ('07) which were less gut wrenching pain than blunt frustration you would probably have to go back to the '84 grand final to find a similar level of acid in stomach disgust that we felt on Friday night. To put that in perspective Geelong have lost 5 premierships in that period. Collingwood have lost 25 (yes 25!) flags throughout history. In fact there is a reasonable argument to suggest that these sort of losses galvanise supporters and increase passion for the club. I know for me it has. I love the Hawks more than ever.

Re: Well done Hawks

still shattered...

Do you guys think it was the game of the year? I am so tempted to watch it again.

My mate at work has said it is equal best game he has even seen (equal to the pies/cats prelim 2007) so he says.

Heart aching stuff...

Proud... I have been proud of our boys all year. When we play hard and try our best... I am always proud of us.

well said and agree 100% i hate the posts blaming a young fellow that dropped a mark that did not cost the game and people should not have been going him anyway ! 90%plus effective disposals for 1 is good last i heard .

they all worked their guts out to the very end and like you said the fianl out come was what mattered most sadly it was not our way but that is footy for you isn't it .

i knew it was going to be a tough game and it sure turned out to be a nail biter loved it but hated it too did not like losing i am shattered guttered and devastated and finding it hard to even want to watch the game this weekend , i am thinking a fishing trip or a movie is in order .

yes there was 1 or 2 dodgy ump decisions but that did not cost us the game either if we had kicked a goal or 3 more instead of points that may have helped .

what happened happened we can not turn back time to change it , we will be way better for this and in 2012 we will come out firing
still guttered and shattered but will live
100% effort 100% tough 100% epic game and 100% better then the cats v weagals

2012 membership bought

NO, the year sucked, let down by a shitty umpired, arseh*le end to an otherwise great year, yeh the boys did well, but crumbled under pressure in the end. The coach should have used the sub, the arseh*le umpres should have played a few decisions differently in the end. I did hope that cats won a coulple days ago, but now I just hope they both kill each other and have injuries putting them out of contention for 2012, yeh a bit mean.
