Tis a pissweak little jump though, to be sure.
I've tried many a time to jump shells, etc, without any luck whatsoever. I am aware that it's possible to avoid a pow! by jumping, but I personally haven't managed that yet, either.

True story. The jump is shit house, but you can jump to avoid a POW. I've nailed it a few times, but it isn't that easy. There's a video of someone doing it on Youtube and IIRC it was earlier in this thread that I came across it.

I use B to use items. I've never noticed the kart jump pressing it.
Sounds like you're using auto.
If you use manual the only difference in driving is that B is your jump/slide button. In either auto or manual you can use items by pressing the D-Pad.
lol, you're definitely on Auto - haha enjoy being shit again as you learn how to use the powerslide
