so something is got to give
either give Keane an extension and more money but would need to play him or trade for picks etc.

with Collingwood list in the media being talked being too old etc and they are willing traders... we can trade both Keane and Berry for their future first and current 2nd round draft pick.
Zero chance they do that deal. Given they gave up what will likely be a top 10 pick - maybe top 5 if their form continues downward - for Shultz, can't see them putting next year's 1st on the table unless it's a seriously big get. Given we're looking to improve our list and we're trading best 22 players (Berry maybe not if everyone is available), players might be a more likely deal. Am sure they'd float Noble and McInnes but doubt either are best 22 for us. McCreery would be the dream.

So if you are paying Keane $700k pa, how much are you paying for our other taller players?
Murray, Worrell, Butts, Thilthorpe, Fogarty & Walker?

If we are paying all our top 20ish players 50+% more than the average salary (top players close to double), we will have a cap problem...
I think much of the discussion depends on what the actual salary cap is going forward. Keane is OOC starting 2026 and in the final year of the current CBA (2027) the average salary is $519k. That’s average across 44 players on the list. Most first team player is likely to earn more than the average, especially in demand KPD with multiple clubs chasing, and who is mid career and made bugger all $ at this stage. This is his first, and possibly last, chance to cash in and lock in a material long term contract.

I stand by 4 years at 700k ish esp with an average salary likely to be 600-700k during the second half of his contract period of say 4 years. If he takes 2 years at 500k well…I will eat my hat live on BF.

As per your above queries , my estimate

Murray 700-800
Worrell 650-750, possibly higher depending on progression leading into FA status
Butts 600-700
TT 900 for contract leading into FA. Along with Rankine and Dawson (and hopefully Curtin) our likely most elite player
Fog 800k ish as will be a RFA, again depends on progression leading into FA

Remember players in first 2 years / rookies earn almost nothing (100k or whatever plus match payments), second contracts can see a decent bump depending on player (Curtin over 600k easily I imagine) whilst others like Nank, Berry, Dowling would likely be under/around league average (300-400k)

Rankine should be our highest player and first ever 1m+ man when he is OOC at the end of next year

Each players situation is different and clearly Keane financially will see this as his one big chance to cashin

Interesting discussion (speculation) and see how it plays out

Currently Murphy (contracted through 2025), Sholl (2026) and Jones (2026) are RFAs so among our better paid players...that is real. We're going to have some room to move with salary cap in the coming years.

I understand Jones would likely be RFA but scary to think our talent level was so bad that Murphy (and Sholl) are in top 25% of earners. Seriously scary but likely to be rectified with the talent brought in since 2020 onwards,

Can I please ask where you access that data?

We should 100% trade him.

Finally learn our lesson of trading players at max value, not when they revert to their mean.

He'd have reasonable value, too.
I disagree, given his inexperience he definitely hasnt peaked. If he works on his deficiencies could become a very solid key back.

We wouldn’t be getting fair value right now

wonder if the delay in re-signing is because the club is still deciding who they prefer as the 2nd kpd, him or Butts.
His future value will depend on whether he can improve in 1 on 1 contests.

We already know he is a good interceptor.

He's not getting anywhere near $700k pa that is for sure!

That is insane.

Wouldn’t say insane. Probably a bit high - $600k maybe closer.

The salary cap is going up like 35% over the next few years. That’s why $1m is being thrown around like a common salary moving forward

Agreed, I don't see any value in throwing Keane away for a bag of chips at this point.

I worry that Keane's interception ability is slightly talked up. As in, maybe he gets more interceptions than others because he runs off his man more often than he probably should. It pays off sometimes, other times it leaves him all at sea trying to get back onto his man.

Still stand by Keane worth $700K?

Imo, he's not worth anywhere near what both Murray & Worrell should be earning.

Not sure his contract value changes too much either way after a good or bad game. It’s body of work IMO.

Let’s wait until he signs a new contract and see where the numbers fall. Very happy to say I misjudged it if he re-signs for 500k which personally think unlikely. Interesting watch…all speculation clearly.

Part of me does wonder if he is half tanking - under Pies guidance - to help achieve an outcome to leave Adelaide at the end of this year on the cheap, despite public comments to the contrary

Obviously not.

Keane has one big weakness, which is that if he is not with his man when the ball is in the air, he loses them. He doesn't read it in the air well enough to end up in the right spot, and equally he doesn't know where his man is, so he ends up all at sea.

This should be as easy as telling him to just focus on his opponent in those situations. Forget about the ball, get to your opponent, get into a position where you can spoil without giving away a free, and then work out where the ball is.

If he can tidy that issue up he can be a very useful player. If not, it will always be something teams seek to exploit.

Firstly don’t let your figures be twisted. Your call was 700 ish with an average between 600-700 in second half.
Imo this is spot on with full AFL salary lift which will be included with any new contract.
Imo Keane will be above avge to elite rated in a couple of years for position , Collingwood see it as do we.
