He's right. They had a great year and achieved a lot when no one expected it.

They gave their fans hope and really put clubs like ours (Carlton), Richmond and Melbourne in the shade with their ability to work back through to a good list - how long has it taken us? Years and years (Bloody Pagan with his incessant recruiting of hacks).

Good on you Williams, great year.

You're right they had a great year

Carlton are just happy making a profit at the moment.

I was talking today with a few guys about yesterday and I said "I'm glad we (Collingwood) didn't make the grand final if it meant being on the bad end of that"

And looking back, that loss will do more bad than good for Port.

That's crap. People come up with these "emotional scars" theories, like when Essendon came back from 70 points down to beat North, it was supposed to debilitate North for a generation. Yet since that day back in 2001, North has NEVER lost a game to Essendon. Port will recover. On the other hand, it will take more for the likes of Carlton to overcome the tanking culture.

I really don't think Port Adelaide is the envy of Collingwood. At least we were competitive against Geelong and showed heart in everyone of our finals performances...

I do wonder though. Having been on the end of a couple of spankings in finals, I'm not convinced that it's more painful than a 5 point loss.

Cam Mooney also consoled every Port player before getting amongst his team mates.

I didn't see that bit (too busy sucking up the atmosphere after the game having never seen a GF before - what a GF to chose :( ) but it doesn't suprise me - he comes across as if he would be a pretty good bloke.

Of course the have. Coming second when most expected a bottom 8 finish?

As a Carlton fan you'll be seeing 10th next year as a great finish given where we've come from.

Port had a fantastic year and you're an idiot.

Whatever F---head

the thing is, that decision is 100% based on hindsight. when you go into the prelim, you do all you can to win, every single time. no one would've thought port got hammered in the fashion they did, as big favourites as geelong were. so you can say 'id rather not make the grand final than get smashed like that', but it's a statement that is completely unchangeable as its said in hindsight.

Exactly right. But remember people, in a final, if you lose by 119 points or by 1 point, you are still runner-up. That is better than 14 other teams did. Geelong all year have destroyed teams by big margins as soon as they get a small break. Port needed to have the lead or be on even terms at quarter time to have a chance. Geelong were the better team and the way they played yesterday would have done the same to any other side in the comp!

Some of the best sporting advice i have ever being given came to me form an ex Australian lacrosse captain and 6 time VLA premiership captain. He said "premiership chances don't come along very often, make the bloody most of it". Port didn't do that. From the players point of view they probably just feel shame and as a result may wished they never even played. Then again surely more shame would derive from losing to the talentless pauperoos at home. From a spectators view it's a bloody hard pill to swallow. I know it all to well. But at least you had the chance to hope for the week before the final. That is what its about. Much better than excusing your team of s0ftc*ckss with some BS about draft picks.

I'm in the "rather not make it than get smashed" camp.

When your team gets into the grand final, it's a scramble for over priced tickets, flights, accommodation, time off work, extra money for alcohol, the emotional build up etc..

To go through everything to see your team there and have them not even give a whimper would be absolutely shattering.

Full credit to Port and Choco. The only way there were ever going to beat us was to talk it up and try to get in our heads. That didn't work, and they were comprehensively pummeled. But they did a great job to get there, and were magnanimous in defeat, and WILL bounce back from this loss next year.

I know that the Crows got lucky in their two premierships, but it doesn't mean that everyone else subscribes to that theory.

We earned our way to the GF, and got smashed.

You were "lucky" to finish 8th!

Yeah the Crows were also "lucky" enough to beat the Port both times this season. I think even Carlton would have done better in the Grand final then Port... and they wouldn't even have been trying! :D

Yeah, its the money that hurts.

If it was all free, I'd still go though I reckon. Its pissweak to duck out of going to a footy match you've already paid to see (or is free) just because you'll lose.

what a weak pathetic wimps way out!

You should ALWAYS try to get to the top, not give up because you are too scared of failure.

I bet you only go to games that you're sure your team will win!

for an "Angry Dragon" you're not very scary....maybe you should change your name to "Puff the Magic Dragon", or how about "Dorothy the Dinosaur"

Mark Williams comments have been read wrongly - notice the past tense - 14 other clubs were somewhat jealous that Port had been able to turn their side over so fast - I don't think he was saying that the other clubs would be jealous of us right now - that would be crazy. Now we have been brought back to earth a bit, but it has been a good year - so we shouldn't be too devestated - and as a Port fan I certainly am not.

No matter how you look at it, this has tainted the Port Adelaide image that they have constantly portrayed. Prior to their next Grand Final, there is no way they will be talking about their history of premierships and the culture of success at the club. I mean, that was the weakest effort I have seen in a long time, and considering what respect I had for Port's history - it was an effort I could never have expected.

fair enough, and you're probably right - however our history does go back 137 years, and one game does not change that history too significantly - so I will keep believing in our history, but you are right in that I doubt we will go around flaunting it should we be in a similar situation next year.

however one grand final win would quickly erase the embarassment we suffered yesterday.

Yes, always try to get to the top. Port went down without a fight though.

Not sure about the rest of your post. Feeling OK?
