Battle is a real puzzle. If he played a full season at full forward he’d be considered Josh Kennedy’s protege, and yet we don’t have a spot for him.

It’s going to be equally tricky to fit Carlisle into the backline on today’s performance. Paton too is probably going to miss out through absolutely no fault of his own.

At the end of the day, you don’t recruit and structure a list on the basis that you’ll have no injuries. So when you do have no injuries, it becomes exceedingly tricky. I don’t think there’s any easy answers.

Plenty of positives so the negatives

Sincs and Phillips back to the magoos.

Kent didn’t do enough for me and looked a bit shaky one on one. Lonie, Gresh and Butler enough small power.

Don’t like Hunter in the backline I think Coff is better suited to hbf

Too fumbly still, we need one touch players

Battle did enough for mine especially in the 4th Q.

Dunstan - very good, he's such a bull at centre clearances. Previously I thought he could become a Boak type, now I'm thinking he could be a Daniel Cross. Hope he can keep it up this year.

Steele - for some reason I never notice him as much as everyone else seems to. Good game obviously.

Long - my only worry is that he's still so small and light, I'm not sure he can be defensive enough. But great when playing loose.

Clark - my favourite right now, every time he gets near the ball things happen.

Jones - slotted right in perfectly, I suspect the long-term will show him as the most valuable of our five recruits.

Paton - I'd be happy if he played every game. He won't but the kid is progressing really nicely.

Hannebery - looks rusty, fingers crossed he can hit top form at some point this year.

Kent - not great with the ball but his pressure is good, reminds of a better version of Robert Eddy.

Roberton - nowhere near his best, great to see him out there but I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't play round one.

Howard - I bagged him early but he was very good after that. Looks a good matchup for B Brown in a couple of weeks.

Marshall - I thought he had the better of Grundy in the first half, though overall a quietish game for him.

Lonie - he could kick 30 this year if all goes right for him, fingers crossed. Second efforts very good, finishing has improved.

Butler - he was fine, pressure very good. Could have popped up a bit more with the ball.

Battle - I'd love to see him play 22 this year, not sure how that happens though.

Wilkie - fantastic, this guy should play 200.

Sinclair - surely up against it to get a regular game this year.

Ryder - decent in the ruck, not much else to show. Not sure how this experiment will work out.

King - obviously a long way from the finished article but equally obviously he's got all the raw ingredients.

Phillips - doesn't seem to have improved, I can't see how he makes it.

Coffield - won't play round one but seems to be progressing nicely.

Just me but I thought the Ryder/Marshall combo was awesome today. Every ruck contest we had a very good ruck there competing. We dominated around the ball at times.

The other huge positive was Long. Looks like being a serious point of difference. He will stuff up at times I'm sure, but every time he got it he looked dangerous and looked like setting things up. He is really strong and hard to tackle. His kicking is beautiful too.

Seriously there are so many selection headaches going into round 1. Battle's forward cameo was excellent. Coff was really good too, as was Paton.

Phillips - doesn't seem to have improved, I can't see how he makes it.

BTW, how often recently have we ended up with the shit brother?

Ed Phillips
Brodie Murdoch
Paddy McCartin
Sam Crocker
Tom Simpkin
Eljay Connors

Admittedly none of their brothers are exactly superstars, but they've all achieved more.

Thing I liked most about the game was that it was blindingly obvious that we had gone back into the too many handballs to stationary targets. Particularly in the 2nd quarter but most of the first half.
For Ratts and the coaches and the players to change that problem after the half time break gives me some confidence that there are substantial change taking effect.
I must admit I enjoyed watching both Marshall and Ryder go to work on Grundy. I know others have a bit of angst about it but I like watching us at each ruck contest with a genuine ruckman with a great chance of getting the ball going our way. That was Grundy, imagine clubs with poor ruckmen, of which that is probably half the AFL. I think it will be a point of difference for us that will reap rewards.
As for the players. Some good, some ok, some poor. I will stick up for JB though. Lots of unselfish running and presenting. Not going to be as easy for opposition sides to sit on him and nullify him as he now has better players around him. He's been very solid in both Marsh games so if you're going after him then we must be going ok into the season.
