The current executive will stand in the Hub. Presidents, Secretaries and etc stay the same. So Max will not be putting himself out of a job should the league go with the the Hub system.

This is a bit confusing! If the League go with the Hub system, wouldn’t the CEO of the chosen hub be the secretary?

Not sure about the current executive staying the same either. Heard that RG has lodged an application for presidency already:eek:. And someone else is looking to oppose his application.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Layles (Spelling) guy is still the president of the LPFL and he has been for some time now.

The talk is that RG has little chance of being voted in.

BRIAN Walsh won Bendigo FL Michelson medal in 1969 (aged 18 y.o) when playing for Sandhurst. Then played for Carlton and Essendon before coaching career took off.
After terms at Fitzroy and Werribee noted above, coached Sandhurst to 1985 BFL grannie (lost to Nthn. United). Then transferred to G. Square as coach in 1st of 2 stints there. Square won the 1988 and 1989 flags under Walshie. Runners-up to South in 1990 which was P. Bradbury's 2nd year as Bloods' mentor.

There are a heap of Walshs associated with Sandhurst, all related to Brian. Among them --- Kevin Walsh was a very good HBF/winger for the Dragons while Brian's younger bro. Phillip played for the Square and had some assistant coaching roles a couple of years back.

Rich: Talbot Market is on again this Sunday. Are you blokes running the stall again to help raise $$$$$ for the "2008 Pickles' Fund" ??

sorry for the late reply to this jock, but i was only a kid when brian walsh coached sandhurst to the 1985 grandfinal. i still remember he dropped mark robinson for the game and played himself. his playing career was well over by this date and reflected on his coaching on the day. im not saying that sandhurst may have won but its a reflection of the man himself. yes he coached golden square to premierships after this but there was friction between him a sandhurst, thus his relocation. i believe i could have coached golden square to those easy wins. take care old friend.

I am still confused here Thoroughbred.
What does Layles being President of the LPFL have to do with the MCDFL situation?

One can only hope!

My understanding is that we still would have a league President. The hub would take on the secretarial role although Max could still be retained to help out with some duties if the league wanted him to. The Treasurary role could also be ran by the hub if the league wanted or we could appoint a treasurer ourselves. The hub administration can take on as much of the admin role that we require. We still have total control of the league, we would just have to agree on to what extent we want to administer and what we want the hub to administer. We can trial this for 12 months, then change some areas that we think need improving. It would be a work in progress.

If now one else puts their hand up then Reiny will get in unappoused. Look out for this as it's likely to happen.

He would have to have a very good chance of being voted in if the field for the role of president has only one starter.

I must admit after reading the info on the hub over the wkend and hearing people's arguments on here I am also of the opinion now that the Brat hub is the way to go. The 12 month trial makes it particularly appealing I think!

We were working at the footy club over the wkend and RG did not mention the presidency so not sure what his intentions are.

Heard Sellers is heading back to Rovers this year. Haven't heard of them landing any other big fish just yet.... but are trying hard from all reports!

How many clubs have starting training??

Sellars back to Rovers? doubt it will happen as I've heard he's been trying to get a former local player up to Nyah Nyah where he is.

The following letter was recently sent to the editor at the Maryborough Addy by Atrel Turner who was a very handy footballer in his day.
What are people’s thoughts? Sorry it is a bit long!

Recently Kel Noonan wrote with a concern about the number of teams Maryborough and District have playing football and the shortage that exists.

The problem does not only exist here, but in most country competitions across the state.
From what I see the VCFL need to make enormous changes otherwise football in the country areas will die a slow death.

Unfortunately the AFL has structured the elite Under 18 competition which takes the best juniors around, but my structure would also allow (the perceived not up to it players) the opportunity for juniors to develop in the next best competition of major league.

Football in Victoria is in real trouble contrary to what people in charge believe.

I have a possible solution that I believe will not only help but improve the standard across all levels of the game.

1. Remove all high payments to players and have an incentive based payment to the 10 best players in each team on the day of play. The coach would be the only contracted player in the team bust is not to be included into the incentive payments. No player in the team is to be paid outside the incentive structure.

2. Minor Leagues are to have a team of 22 players (18 on the ground and 4 interchange) for seniors, and only 18 players (16 on the ground and 2 interchange) for the reserves with the age not to exceed 24 years.

3. Major league will also have an incentive payment for the best 10 players on the day with an incentive for the coach. The reserves team should be made up of the best 18 and under players of the district.

4. The best players of the district can be promoted to major league competition during the season if required, and….

5. Reduce all other under age teams to 16 players on the ground at one time and the maximum interchange would be 6 players.

The major problem is raising the money for the players. Invariably the team with the most money dominates as it gets the bset players.

This structure removes all payments to players other than the coach and incentives to the best players on the day.

The payment structure should be devised by the VCFL and strictly adhered to.

Major league competition incentives would need to be better than the minor league which would encourage players to strive to play in the best competition available.

In this structure, players above 24 years of age (in minor league) if not up to playing seniors would not be able to play.

This would encourage more younger players to take on the game.

Somebody needs to do something about it soon or it will be too late and football will just be a memory.

I personally agree that the Under 18 elite structure has ruined the game.
Not to sure about the rest of his points.
Especially the over 24 retirement for reserve grade players. I don’t believe this would encourage more younger players to take on the game as he suggests..

It would also be very difficult to control the payment system. That is the reason the salary cap was removed in the first place.

I agree with his final paragraph, but who is that somebody? Perhaps Atrel himself could approach VCFL Head Honcho, Glenn Scott, to air his views personally.

So a 25yo ones player gets dropped and then can not play footy at all as he can't work to get back into the ones????

a lot of clubs can't feild a reserves side even getting players 50+ onto the ground......

Simo

i agree tac cup u18s is a big drain on district junrs wot about the bendy bombers for gawds sake the bombers reserves, realy essendn threes, take heaps of young players from across the region look at the guy who playd for maldon this year and causd his club to loose there match points he played bomber reserves in the dew kickng game one satrday then went to maldn to play in the mcfl

Spot on Zakster. Ever since the Bendigo Bomber reserves came about, there has been a drop in standard in the Bendigo League. I haven't noticed it so much in the MCDFL which I think is actually getting better. Good on them for taking the opportunity to play at the higher level but it has come at a cost for this district.

Good point there Simo. I think this bloke is a little out of touch with how hard it is to actually get a reserves side onto the ground week in week out for most clubs! We cant go putting restrictions on the twos as 75% of clubs in the state wouldn't have enough under 24s to fill it.

The incentive scheme, whilst good in theory, will not work due to problems enforcing as another poster pointed out.

Country Footy in this district is faced with many challenges but I dont think it's all doom and gloom. I personally think the MCDFL has come on in leaps and bounds on the footy field in the last 2-3 years.

I spoke with Max Martin today and it is his thoughts that the hub is the way to go. The only decision he thought that needs to be made is which hub (Ballarat or Bendigo) the MCDFL shoukd go with. This move will see Max's current role being picked up by Rod Ward or Stephen Oliver.

It will be great if Max stays true to his word as it is important that this dedicated sports administrator be able to move on with the dignity and appreciation he so richly deserves.

Not footy related but I also found out that Clarrie Smith has sold the premises of his Mitre10 store. Clarrie said that it would no longer be a hardware store and that he will have six months to sell all the gear off. Wonder what will go in there?

That’s good to hear King! Hopefully you can use some influence with the delegates at the meeting on Wednesday night.:)

Good to hear that Max is going to go out of his own accord.

As I have said previously, he has been a fantastic contributor to the MCDFL for many years and to the community in general for that matter.

Wonker is spot on. He deserves to be able to move on with the dignity and appreciation he deserves.

I heard that at work today too Wonker, and i believe it is Aldi that has purchased these premises. Could be interesting really. Back to footy, hub sounds good I think, Max and Jock have been fantastic and yeah it would be good to see Max go out on his terms. Which hub? I don't really have an opinion on which way we go, but the 12 month trial would probably be the way to go. Going back a few posts, is there any news on Newstead?? Do they have a coach or committee yet??

Yes good on him.
