I dont pay much attention to the belief that he will want to leave purely because he was dropped for the grand final, it seems as if he came to terms with the decision and realizes it was for the best. However im sure that it could be a tiny factor at the back of his mind "Will I ever get into another grand final?". What I do think might cause him to move on is money and oppertunity, and that is not to say he is a money hungry ninja just that if he wants market value (and who wouldnt) he is going to have to move on somewhere else.

I just read an article that states Geelong players are going to have to accept around 20% less than market value to maintain the team, I believe that West Coast would offer 20% above market value to get him thats a 40% increase in the offer put forth by Geelong (all speculation of course).

What I would like to know is how much will he be worth as a trade? and if there is any chance that he will be moved on or want to move on.

he is worth a first round pick and kennedy

but even then we might not deal

would be on $500k, top tier player

Re: Matthew Stokes

he wasn't dropped for the GF, he was just not selected for it. He played against the dogs in the QF and was apparently injured or sore, and went out for the PF against Collingwood. I don't think he's got much of a case to be upset since there was no real weak player he could have replaced from the way we dismantled the pies.

Re: Matthew Stokes

Stokes is a fine player and champion fellow. When fully fit there are few players who find space like him because he works so hard.

A few on this board see his ability to find space in and behind the zones is due to him being lazy. TV can give this impression but when I watched him at the ground he always worked very hard. He is a great kick and has good skills. He is the bloke to free up Le Cras.

I don't think however Geelong will trade him unless he wants to get more opportunity.

It was hard to fault Byrnes this year (some still try) and Varcoe continues to improve. 3 into 2 don't go. Should he accept a trade Geelong would require a first rounder (mid to late) or a second rounder with a player.

I am a big Sphanger fan so he would do for me - but my name is not Wells

I doubt he will request a trade, but there is a reasonable chance he will be moved on. Depending on what the draft class looks like and what we want Stokes + pick 16 for pick 7 works for me.

Throw in a young player and they have a deal, someone like Spangher (spelling???) perhaps.....not sure on how much they value him though.

i dont think we want any players back, espically a spangher whos around for 2,3 years, so he wont be on a base contract.

1st for stokes and 1st

or

2nd for stokes

is fine by me if he really wants to go.

Re: Matthew Stokes

To be honest I didnt rate him as highly as most here, I was thinking early second rounder. Spangher the coaching staff rate pretty highly and they are trying to retain him as they believe he will come good in the next few years, loosing Hunter is another reason why they want to keep him.

Its possible that we are going to recieve 1-2 picks inside the the second round as well as our own and my feeling is that we would offer one of those picks (or our own) straight up for Stokes. That would likely be a first "bid" offer though and depending on how bad we wanted him we could have a fall back second rounder + player. To me your first rounder seems too far back in this draft to be much value compared to pick #7.

Re: Mathew Stokes

I'd be disappointed if we traded Stokes, and I hope he stays. His class throughout GF week and on the day itself was that of a great clubman.

It's Gamble who I wouldn't blame for seeking opportunities elsewhere. If Stokes stays, we'll struggle to fit him - let alone him and Gamble - into any given match.

Re: Mathew Stokes

I think Stokes will not ask to be traded, but will be traded by the club (unfortunately).
If we could trade:
1) Stokes & 1st rd pick for WC 1rd pick - done deal
We could pick up a quality young kid with that pick.

Off topic, but what would Gamble be worth? 2nd - 3rd rounder at best?

Re: Mathew Stokes

Well if you believe the rumors than Nicoski for Stokes swap with what IMO would be us paying Nicos wages in our cap.

or a more realistic approach and say Brisbane or Sydneys 2nd rounder for Stokes. The idea of getting a first rounder is delusional because quite simply you cant afford to keep him

Re: Matthew Stokes

rubbish. not worth first round, let alone with a reasonably skilled player.
i assume you can't read
it was a joke

as if you bunnies on this forum know whether he will be traded and for what

he will not be traded

i told everyone harley will play on, when you all thought he would retire

stokes will stay, no need to trade him, and whats on offer is shite

stokes will stay

gamble will go,

Re: Mathew Stokes

Stokes has a contract offered to him. We will have to wait to see if he signs up or is traded off. Geelong cannot expect to pay his market value, however if he is a true clubman as his form during the GF week suggets he will re-sign.
If not, WC would need to come up with a deal to get him as I am sure WC aren't the only team that would look at him.

Unfortunately it can sometimes be pretty hard to determine the tone of your voice while looking at words on a computer screen. You call everyone bunnies for speculating what may happen or coming up with possible outcomes, and then you go on to tell everyone what 'will' in fact happen. I just saw a donkey calling a horse an ass. Grow up.

i guess is one thing to be a club man and give up a spot when you not fit, and another when you get paid 40%-50% more. is still a job and he needs to earn a living.

if he does leave for money, i got no issues. what number is ealges 2nd?

I don't think he's got much of a case to be upset since there was no real weak player he could have replaced from the way we dismantled the pies.

He withdrew himself from the Collingwood game due to groin soreness. My opinion of it is he felt guilty about us losing last years Grand Final because we went in with injured players including himself. So he didn't want to go in injured and cost us the game if it was close. I am sure he knew that when we won the Prelim there would be next to no chance of him getting back into the team for the Grand Final but he still withdrew. Shows great character and selflessness putting the team before himself.

When Stokes had a run in the VFL earlier in the year and Byrnes kicked 5 goals against Freo then 4 against Port the following week i had a serious thought that maybe Stokes wouldn't make it back into the team for the entire year. They fill very similar roles and unless we have injuries i think 1 of them will miss out on a lot of games next year.

So Stokes very well may want to move to guarantee more game time next year but with the character he has showed by withdrawing from the prelim and the respect for the club for some reason i don't see him going anywhere.

Re: Mathew Stokes

The Australian is reporting today that Stokes has been offered a two year contract. He is a required player and everybody around the club was very impressed with how he carried himself during Grand Final week.

It is up to Stokes if he wishes to stay at Geelong or not. I really hope he does. I see him in our best 22 and I would have liked him to have played on Saturday - in all reality, the only reason he missed out is because everybody played so well in the prelim.

If we thrashed Collingwood in the 2007 prelim, would we have dropped Blake for King? I doubt it.

To the best of my knowledge, players rarely walk out on a club solely at being left out of a Grand Final team. Look at Blake and Wojcinski - both went thorugh heartbreak in 2007/2008, but both received medallions on the weekend.

I'd take that deal in a second. Much respect for Stokesy but we would get a good kid for that. Cunnington would be ideal.
