News Matt White joins Port

I have really enjoyed watching him play a few games this year. I think he is a great fit at Port. With Richmond signing Martin they don't have the ability to give a player like White a lucrative contract. He should fit into the second half of our best 22. I see him playing a role on the wing or being a small defender against players like Motlop. He is made for the Port list and he is a free agent. He did hurt his hammy in the last game so hopefully he works very closely with Burgess.

If he gets to Port I will make my call in a years time. Didn't really rate Monfries that highly this time last year. I'm happy for the bloke to get a chance at a new club where Matt White will get what Matt White deserves.
Monfries was a former pick 14, had played a lot of high possession games and plenty of 3,4,5 goal hauls before coming over.

White is the most inconspicuous 100 game player in history. Averages 12 touches and 0.5 goals a game over his career. He is 26 and Richmond are only offering him a 1 year contract.

Hinkley is a good coach but he cant work miracles. There are plenty of players on our list who aren't good enough for AFL and M.White will join them.

I hope he does well for you guys.
Love Matty White and the way he goes about his footy.
Will bleed for the jumper and provide some great run and carry which will result in some quality goals!
Will definitely be cheering him on (except against us)

Agree that he's not an overly special player bar his pace. We wouldn't be paying him too much though so I guess coaches have decided he's better than anyone else available for that spot on our list (ie versus late draft rounds kids, SANFL/VFL players). Would have preferred a two-year contract but spose it's hard to get people to move interstate without a bit more of a commitment. Hopefully they can add an out clause there for the third year if he really stinks it up though...

Despite my dislike for him im going to take this as a positive. Hinkley did great things with a number of players this year. I didnt see the years that Moore, Monfries, Lobbe, Colquhuon, O'Shea, Jonas or Neade had coming. Why cant he improve White's output as well.

If he can average 16 disposals and a goal a game, ill take that happily.

Jeez, he took his boots, too?
Always liked Whitey, and his 2013 was a big step up from previous sub mediocrity. Not quite as fast as he thinks he is, but, still faster than, say,....most of anybodies list. This year he really showed he has improved his kicking, which was notably unreliable in the past. ( charge away from pack, weave past 1, kick the thing 12 m with his knee, 30000 face palms.
This year pretty darn good. Your style will suit him better too. Just hoping he is out for a week when playing us (still haven't got over losing Rodan or Sarge, both were faves) doesnt seem to be done and dusted yet, reported souring not a huge hurdle...done and Dusty'ed?

Now, whose this Matt Thomas I'm reading all about?

Dont forget Hammer aswell, played all but 2 games and no injuries until the last game

Seriously Richmond posters praising this bloke makes me more sceptical, probably just another list clogger that goes missing in september

Coming from Richmond how could this possible be known?

Is this some sort of sick ******* joke? The guy is 27, has never kicked over 11 goals in a season, and gets numbers in the low 10's. **** this.

Must be something wrong, never heard of Matthew White or Jared Polec until trade rumours started.
That's a problem, average players get blown out of proportion during the trade period like Melbourne overpaid for Mitch Clark.

Hoping our trades, whoever thay may be, live up to the hype and then some.

If you have not heard about them you don't follow other teams that much

I mean Polec was a pick 5 from SA... I don't know about others but I always keep a casual eye on top picks out of interest and dreamteam.

And White has been around for a while too, and when he gets a touch he catches the eye with his pace, just doesn't get it enough IMO.

BTW how do other people rate the defensive side of White's game? To me he seems to have a lot of the same weaknesses that Rodan did.

I trust our coaching staff here... If players don't defend, the don't play.

Hold your horses Cripps and co, get Kenny Hinkley on the line, Dobie's never heard of this guy!!
I bet you'd never heard of Hombsch or Neade last year either right? Monfries was some Victorian player.. maybe a midfielder or something? I bet you said the same thing when Sydney brought in Josh P Kennedy and Ben McGlynn.

It's pretty clear we're doing our homework and targeting undervalued fringe players which fill a need. 850K for 3 years is only marginally above the average AFL salary and he fills a MASSIVE need. Pittard is the closest thing we have to a linebreaking midfielder and he plays in defence. Savvy recruiting if you ask me and proof Cripps and old mate Rhode have been doing their homework this year.

Dobbie, you're posting on a forum full of football tragics. If you don't know the top 5 picks form a couple of years ago, that's your problem.

You probably hadn't heard of Nat Fyfe til last year either I'm guessing...

If this happened 12 months ago barely any Richmond supporter would've batted an eyelid. I suspect if we'd cut one more player it would've been White. However on the heels of his best season it seems slightly odd that we're allowing him to walk over the issue of an extra year on his contract. Appears to be a late bloomer in a David Wojcinski kind of way. For years he was a shaky kick, but has ironed out the problems and become quite competent. Importantly he has matured physically and can hold his own at the contest. A potentially handy pickup for nothing.

Never meant it that way & your'e only showing your ignorance if you think I did. There are plenty of footballers the average Joe in the street hasn't heard of and unless you life is 100% devoted to football you cannot be expected to know all the footballers in this world.
When a trade is on the table their worth is inflated by the managers, that's their job.
Caveat emptor.

After several years in the footy wilderness, Matty White finally came good this year. Even though he's 26, the best years of his career are ahead and he won RFC's Most Improved Player this year.

He's fast, explosive and can kick a goal. His biggest knock is consistency. I'm sure Hinkley & Burgess will get the best of him.

I won't be surprised if he turns out to be as good a pickup for you as Monfries was this year.

I don't know what Hinkley and co plans for someone of White's speed

could either be:
1) defence - use pace to break first wave of opponent's forward press
2) mid - tagger
3) sub

but like others mentioned - HInkley and co seems to get (prob not) the best (but close to) from players

Guess you didn't watch him at all this year
