Opinion Matthew Nicks: Adelaide's Coach (Part 2) - Full Support of the Board

Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

  • Firmly no (he should be sacked)

It's not even admitting hiring him was a mistake. You can just as easily say some s**t like

"We're on a pursuit of excellence and Nicks did a fantastic job in restoring the culture and confidence of the Adelaide football club, while embedding the fundamental skills and structures in our young players so they can take the next step. We now believe the time is right to further develop our list and playing style and have selected a coach we believe will take us to the next step of being a premiership winning side. The gains Coach X make will be built off of the work Matthew Nicks has done and we will always acknowledge the hand he had in developing and guiding this team as we continue our journey"
WOW, that's some great spin . I mean it.
Used-Car-Salesman/Politician level PR.

Silvers said this week that he meets weekly with Nicks and Kelly about football and what’s going on.

No chance he’s not involved

He's no doubt involved and gives some input and most probably touches base to see if Nicks needs additional resources, but the decision to re-sign or sack rests with the board.

Was only for teams who took COVID loans.
Its probably a 12 month payout for us. Likely 450-550k he would be on i would presume for a coach thats never got a team into the finals. Hopefully he had a minimum of games he had to win to trigger the contact in 2025 in which case there would be no payout. May as well pull the trigger on firing him midseason if he hasn't won a game.

The decision may be with the board but there’s no way he’s not providing significant input into that decision

I haven't seen anything that has me concerned about Silvers yet.

If we're looking at things from a culpability standpoint for helping Nicks getting re-signed I'd have Roo at the very top of the list.

He's one of my favourite players of all time, but has been an epic failure as a board member.

But I think that's half the problem with Silvers, we haven't seen anything that he has done to improve the club.
That we still have Hamish and Adam Kelly in key roles concerns me.
That we have employed a psychologist to assist with close loses and we are 0-4 concerns me.
That he was a key member in re-appointing Nicks concerns me.
I couldn't name one thing he has done to improve us.
And we haven't even turned a sod of soil at Thebarton as well

I think Nicks looks at those contested/clearance numbers and thinks the midfield is working fantastically. I don't think ball movement after the contest is big on his priority list.
I don't think he understands why those numbers are like they are too.

Clearly the opposition sits off Liard and Crouch as they do no damage with the ball in hand. The coaches are saying just worry about Dawson. They invite the other two to take the ball as they know given their poor skills and lack of metres gained, it will likely lead to a turn over. Sure it doesn't always work out this way, but the don't need to worry about the two.

On Thursday night there was a play on the western side wing and 3 Melbourne players literally descended on Dawson all at once and left the other two alone.

That's exactly what you'd do and it makes complete sense.

I'm not saying they let Laird and Crouch run unchecked but those guys aren't the focus.

All. Midfielders have to be dangerous in their own right.

This is why I don't support playing crouch next to Dawson. The opposition need to worry about all 3 players. That's the sort of midfield we need to be building.

So other than 2020, our worst start to a season is 2010 with 6 losses before winning in R7 against Richmond.
Richmond was so odd that season.
0-9, then 5-1, then 1-6.

Granted, we were pretty strange too. After that 0-6 start, we beat Geelong and St Kilda, and only lost to Collingwood by 3 and WB by 8.

He was on radio saying that the club should hold off on re-signing him then a week later the club re-signs him.

From that, it seems like he didn't have a lot of say in the decision.

I agree Thebarton has been a bit of a shit show, but I'm more concerned that the decision to go there was a bad one. I'm not even sure if Silvers was at the club when the decision was made about Thebarton.

Wow, it sounds that way.
But the amount of times the club says one thing and like you say, a week later do the complete opposite, gives little credibility to the message that comes out at the time.
And when it comes from the CEO, it gives the impression the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing.
And wasn't it Silver saying they didn't want to have the coach signing 'noise'

Tex interview on 7:
‘Process, process, trust the process, backs ok, process, trust the process, process’
I trust the process is currently ****ed!

Results is the ultimate judge of how the process is going...

We've seen the process for the last 4 weeks.
Everyone has lost faith in the process
... except those running the show.

If you know something is broken, you fix it... unless you are a bloody fool.

Unfortunately I have no faith that our collective coaching group have the smarts needed to be successful.
