Opinion Matthew Nicks: Adelaide's Coach (Part 2) - Full Support of the Board

Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

  • Firmly no (he should be sacked)

They're generally trying to sell the idea that we don't need to change anything because this is just the natural step back, and the ordinary progression.

They're insane.

If year on year progression isn't the norm, why mention that we progressed year on year the first 3 years? Also, interesting that they didn't mention the SANFL performances as being evidence of rebuild on track like they told us last year. SANFL performances no longer an indicator?

Does it? They're basically writing this year down as a necessary step along the road to our inevitable rise.

After seven years in the wilderness, it's still manifest destiny. Nothing to see here.
All the talk of "embracing expectations" in the pre-season. Part of that is owning when you fail to meet those expectations and show how you plan to fix, not try to sweep it under the rug with a quick win or two and do performative talk to quieten the noise.

There's at least one who won't. And that's after being a member for many years and a supporter from day one.

Adelaide has no idea, anybody who spends their time looking at the last 7 years of AFL drafts can see that. The organisation is almost defunct, the only hope is to rid the place of the incompetent people in its corridors and start again. Rankine and Dawson must be scratching their heads. If you put Adelaide up against Sydney, it is scary to see the level of stupidity in the place. Anyone decent is happily accountable, the management seem to spend most of their life running for the hills. When some of these individuals finally depart, we can only hope it will be the impetus to roll the place over and start again. The end of Noble, was the beginning of this disaster zone. How some of these people might have been employed, is the biggest question and tells you the story of the last 7 years of drafting.

Noble was around for a long time and we were average throughout. He's definitely one of the overrated employees that we've had through the place. He wasn't bad, he just wasn't anything particularly good.

Yep it's the Fallacy of the Converse.

The famous example is:

  • If it is raining, the ground will be wet.
  • The ground is wet.
  • Therefore, it is raining.
In this case you could say that all (most) successful rebuilds in sporting clubs include a backward (non-linear) step at some point; however, not all backward steps indicate that the rebuild will be successful.

Shows you how far down the bar is now that he looks like a superstar.

He did have his strength/weaknesses, and his particular style of building the team was hit/miss. He looked for value for money in terms of IDing and picking off guys that were not a part of their current teams best 22. Jenkins, Lynch, Seedsman etc were picked like that, but it also was a big failure with guys like Menzel and Hampton. We also were very active in the Cat B space with him with Greenwood, Keath and those 3-4 basketballer rucks we took.

He was also far too generous at the trade table and would pay overs/accept unders to try and keep other teams happy.

Meaningful - not really.

But improvement? 100%

In performance though?

Because I think a real argument can be made that the 2021 wins were actually of a higher calibre: we went from knocking off two top four teams in Geelong and Melbourne in 2021 to no wins against the top six.

By the way, if our 2022 performance was actually regression then we've regressed in three of the five years Nicks has been at the helm: 20 ,22 and 24.

You were right earlier, finishing 1 or 2 spots higher on the ladder does not necessarily equal improved performance. There's far too many variables involved. It's unarguable that your finishing position is higher, but that in isolation doesn't mean that you've improved.

I'm done, I came back after the review mainly because I go to the footy with my dad. But I can't give these arrogant, second rate losers any more of my money. Thankfully my dad agrees so i don't have to feel bad abandoning him. Maybe I'll get a membership again if they ever bring in a member elected board and become a real club.

Feel bad for the Crows social media team, they have **** all to work with. Really scraping the bottom of the barrel for any slop to feed to the tiktok/lead petrol brainrot NPCs.

Kind of right, except that I don't think that there's an actual 'football director' role identified in the club's constitution. We could easily creat a role called 'Football Director' that doesn't sit on the board. Chairman is the only specified role, all other directors are just directors.
Agree. It's all tangled up in the executive and non executive stuff.
Football director might just be a "sub committee" title to allow a clear channel of communication to the board.

I'd have thought the GM of Football would be the most senior paid position in the club.

What happened to all the happy hi-jinx videos we used to get? Surely there's still lots of hilariously funny stuff going on.

I've posted this stat quite a few times, and I'm going to keep posting it

Over the past five years, since Nicks has coached us

We've played the following 10 teams

Sydney, Collingwood, Essendon, Brisbane, Fremantle, Geelong, GWS, Melbourne, Richmond, Bulldogs

53 times for 7 wins.

Is this acceptable to the Nicks defenders and AFC defenders?
Is this coaching? Development? Recruiting?

We used to be a powerful club.

Genuine question: Is the 6th year in a row you have given up your membership or have I confused you with someone else?

Good opportunity for some prank videos at the moment

We have a bogey league
