Opinion Matthew Nicks: Adelaide's Coach (Part 3) - The Biggest Loser

Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

  • Firmly no (he should be sacked)

Yep it is.

So we’ve gone down the same path with Nicks because we re-signed him too early.

The concern is if we have a bounce they’ll justify to keep Nicks when clearly they’ve taken “coaching” away from him and turned him into figurehead.
Not saying it's likely in our instance, but I do wonder if the AFL system will ever adopt an an EPL style manager + first coach coach type structure.

So Silvers said last night Davis will be in charge of gameplan, execution, development and have the assistants report to him.

Crikey sounds like head coach to me.

So what’s Nicks role, grinning, media, motivation? Hinkleylite?

Pretty damming they’re not trusting him with the gameplan. Perhaps they thought he went rogue bunkers too hey WaynesWorld19

The annoying thing is if we have a bounce Nicks will get the credit when clearly Davis is running the show.

Was he in charge of any of these things in Brisbane or are we again appointing a complete rookie to a very important role?

I’d like to hear from the Nicks defenders how they can still rate Nicks as a coach when effectively he’s been relegated to a figure head
Good luck as don't think Wayne is replying to your posts.

We've put the training wheels back on and relegated Nicks to purely personnel management and nothing else

Effectively, aka Kenlite.

Seriously, we originally said Davis was brought on to free up Nicks as he was doing too much.

If Davis is developing gameplan, execution of the gameplan, overseeing the assistants and player development, what the hell are we freeing Nicks time for?

It can only be to manage relationships, work on his game day speeches and media.

After hearing that, I fully expect to see an uptick in performance next year.

Ken is a better coach than Nicks no doubt, results prove it, there’s no question.

As for Ken I know the perception is he’s not really coaching, that’s done by the senior assistants, well info I recently got is it’s true. He’s good with the players, motivation etc, but the gameplan and moves aren’t him. The change was made when he went to the bench, that’s why he doesn’t wear a head set on the bench rather looking like a stunned mullet.

Ken is a puppet?

Well at least we've finally recognised there's a problem. Until the rachele incident I would've said Nicks was fairly good at that

This news is improving our offseason even more

Sure Davis may be no good either, but at least we're trying something different, because having the same coaching set up next year wasnt going to help regardless of how much better our 22 will be

I don’t want to hear him in the media anymore than he is.

This passage posted by someone on X from Pat Cummins’ new book (obviously talking about Justin Langer) probably sums up a lot of Nicks’ problems he faces as a modern-day coach as well;

Haven’t read it but I see vet limited similarities between Nicks and Langer, I also see limited similarities between an AFL coach and Australian Cricket coach

If anything, I see Nicks now like McDonald the current coach, and needs to be more like Langer - that is demanding on his player

Finally, I like Pat as a cricketer and Australian Capt however I find it hard to listen to him on this subject - especially how he and the NSW players went about back-stabbing Langer

We all wished that Nicks had Langers results

To stock the Pepsi fridges and get rid of the flies out of the coaches box on game day :$

McDonald has had great success, what are you on about? Nicks is nothing like him

The biggest thing McDonald encouraged is players being themselves, which is categorically not how Nicks operates
