Opinion Matthew Nicks: Adelaide's Coach (Part 3) - The Biggest Loser

Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

  • Firmly no (he should be sacked)

This passage posted by someone on X from Pat Cummins’ new book (obviously talking about Justin Langer) probably sums up a lot of Nicks’ problems he faces as a modern-day coach as well;

Unfortunately that’s our development 1 wood. Identify weaknesses and focus on them.

Not only that, openly talk them down in public.

Amazing Nicks went public with Dowling and Taylor not being ready, late injuries and then what you know, they are ready.

He’s a ****wit
I mean ****wit is a touch harsh but I get your point.

He's not the first nor the last coach to say a player isn't ready.

My only issue with Nicks saying players aren't ready is he says it when we are really bad and usually those players are performing in the level below

i mean sure, there are players often not ready, but telling us the players next in line aren't ready, when the players in the A grade are playing poorly is reflection on him .

For sure.

Taylor earlier in the year was coming off injury and didn't quite look to be covering the ground like he can.

Dowling I don't know what more he could've done, i mean sure he's not the finished article but he had a bloody impressive SANFL season.

100% , hes not a finished product but clearly he is capable of 100+ games and that is what makes it worse.

Dowling does well and then you then wonder if Nicks has any idea what he is talking about.

Then he does the same thing with Taylor and Bond.

Maybe he needs to find better words.

Nicks current record 37W - 1D - 68L - 106 Total

If we win 13 games next year, his record will be 50W - 1D - 78L - 129 Total

The 13 wins will see him climb off the bottom of the AFC coaching ladder and get above Robert Shaws 38.64% win rate

After round two, he will be our second longest-serving coach, overtaking Gary Ayers 106 games

Craig 166 games 55.42% win rate
Ayres 107 51.4%
Nicks 106 35.38%
Pyke 93 60.75%
Cornes 89 48.88%

Effectively, aka Kenlite.

Seriously, we originally said Davis was brought on to free up Nicks as he was doing too much.

If Davis is developing gameplan, execution of the gameplan, overseeing the assistants and player development, what the hell are we freeing Nicks time for?

It can only be to manage relationships, work on his game day speeches and media.

Learnings, drawing shapes, inoculating cultures, inventing and rehearsing irrelevant cliches. There's plenty for Matty to go on with.

If Nicks doesn't get the 13 wins, he will be sacked as the Crows biggest loser coach.

Football bullshit bingo.

Hamstring awareness too.

He's a dud.
He's going at 35%.

If we need to bring in a Director of Coaching to hold the hand of our second longest-serving coach, to be in charge of gameplan, execution, and development and have the assistants report to him. The club is effectively admitting he's a dud.

I don't disagree with anything you have said.

He's just not very smart.. & yes we have had to bring in a Director of coaching to do most of his job because he is incompetent & our football department & board are morons for extending him.

I don't think it's just a matter of looking at the players in the 2s he's not playing, but combing that with the players in the 1s he is playing ahead of them. That's the key here. Playing players to 50-100+ games when they shouldn't have even played 50.

We seem to have an obsession with perfection. Apart from genuine slow burn developing players, just about every player selected in the first couple of rounds would provide little less, and likely more, input to total performance than regular slugs like Murphy, McHenry et al. As long as they're fit enough, go hard enough and do what they're told, they're worth the punt ahead of one of our continuity/experience/shapeholder types.

It's purely an excuse to explain why an out of form senior player is still getting selected. Continuity, experience, leadership, selection integrity are the first excuses trotted out, but when the pressure ramps up due to the strong performances of the junior player, he's got no choice but to belittle the kid. And then injury forces the hand, and whaddayouknow, kid's magically ready and goes perfectly well.

It looks worse when someone life Brodie Smith hits games triggers because we won't drop him.

Nothing personal against Smith either.

And then list management craps the bed by not getting ahead of him going public about playing on. With cap banking it would be criminally poor management to not keep 5% up our sleeve to pay out a contract like his. The reason he's still on the list is because we didn't want to embarrass him by publicly delisting him. Hell, even though he's the least likely to get Greenwooded, we still couldn't bring ourselves to delist him. It's embarrassing.

We have one of the smallest coaching groups in the league. Bringing in extra people to share the load is not the problem, regardless of if it looks like they're baby sitting Nicks. The bigger indictment will be if we only bring in one in the offseason, should be 2 minimum, as many as 3 or 4 would've been good (provided theyre all quality).

It's a certainty that we've not been spending the full soft cap.

He never ever never mentioned when the senior players were bad

Shit, hes our second longest serving coach? **** we seriously have hired Kenlite.

Then as you’ve said, to bring in a coaching director to effectively coach and none of our other coaches had this role, it’s pretty damming.

Surely WaynesWorld19 you’ve got some comment about Davis new role and what it says about Nicks? What do you see Nicks being responsible for now?

I can't think of another coach we've had where they scrubbed a media appearance he did from their social media channels because he made comments about younger players that made him look like a bit of an idiot.

Oh that’s right, what was that again? Something about kids and values or was that another time?
