honestly?

only (arguably) the biggest cultural phenomenon in western society of the the last 30 years - the simpsons.

the character sideshow bob had exaggerated hair, i guess not dissimilar to scarlett's at a certain time.

also, fyi - google ;)
have not been "privileged" to see an episode of the simpson's, so it's a cartoon character. Deflating really.

I hope the club secures your talents as the assistant coach educating future backmen at Geelong.
I would love for this to happen! Not sure if he's the type of guy who would want to coach however, but I'd like to think that he'd always be around for a few tips when someone needed them ;)

Matthew Scarlett's exit from AFL football was what we expected from him. No histrionics, a short message to the fans, and a completely in character unsmiling last interview on the Cats site. He belongs to an earlier, better, era. This is how Australians at their best think and behave.

I really feel proud of the man, the football club, and the country in which we are so privileged to live.

Thank you M. Scarlett.

if you are talking the first 6-7 seasons, you are right. youre missing out.

anything after that, keep away.
The episode "the blunder years", where Homer gets the night terrors is brilliant, as is "Lisa gets an A", where Homer gets a pet lobster called "Pinchy". Sorry. Thought I would add my 2 cents.

Getting off topic but definitely selling it short, season 8 was brilliant. You only move twice is one of the best episodes they ever did, also Springfield files, mysterious voyage of Homer and Homer vs the 18th amendment were all very good.

the first 6-7 were a guide only! basically, the first half of the series is brilliant, de-generating to patchy, then downright awful... in my opinion only, of course.

must admit, i do remember season 8 being exceptional.

VEEDUBS, get on board and watch some early to mid simpsons!

oh, yeah - and thanks for everything matty!

So could I get this back on track by saying. Thank you Matty, it's been a pleasure to watch you play, and if you ever get given an NFL team, I hope it's not the Denver Broncos (thanx Scorpio;)

It was the most unusual yet inventive moment in football history. The famous toe-poke from Matthew Scarlett, which led to the winning goal in the 2009 grand final. It will no doubt go down in footy folklore, and yet it could so easily have resulted in a tragic turnover. Or could it? This afterall was Scarlo.... a leader amongst men, fearless, single minded, creative. and determined that his way was the way to go. Gary Ablett, the recipient of the unusual pass stood back in total confidence and trust that Scarlett would do precisely what he had to do to get the ball to him. And so he did in the most creative and spectacular way possible......and the rest is history.

However, to be remembered for the toe-poke would be unfair to Scarlett. He was quite simply the best full back in the history of the game. Some of the tributes from his peers were powerful. Andrew Mackie, a celebrated footballer in his own right said "He made us all better players". Gary Ablett, arguably the best player of the modern era, thought Scarlett was "The most competitive player he had ever seen". And almost every opposition forward that had the dubious honour of playing on Scarlett conceded that he was just about unbeatable. His strength and inspiration was not limited to heroics on the field, he was a leader off the field too.

He was a man of very few words during his career but when Matthew Scarlett spoke everyone listened, and respected his opinion more than any other. He was at the forefront of the change in culture within the Geelong Football Club, a culture that is now the envy of all other clubs. And he was high on the list of people that have made Geelong the "Greatest Team Of All". And when he left the field for the last time it was typical Scarlo, no fanfare, no fuss, no expectation from him that would take focus off a disappointing loss, just a reluctant wave of his water bottle to acknowledge the applause from his adoring fans. He'll be missed, of that there is no doubt, both on and off the field.

So, just how can you replace him? Well, the answer to that is easy, you can't, because maybe a lifetime of lifetimes will pass before we ever see the likes of another Matthew Scarlett again. Good luck champ and thanks for the memories.

Did anyone see Hawkins interviewed On The Couch last night?

Asked about how we plan to stay a strong club, he mentioned Scarlett retiring and said something along the lines of "we'll have to see if any of the other guys retire, too."

I hadn't contemplated we'd have any other retirements aside from Wojcinski, who barely played seniors this year.

Did anybody else think that there might be a surprise retirement or two around the corner... ?

It wouldn't surprise anyone. I wouldn't be surprised if another veteran or so didn't want to go through another pre-season.

Who are the candidates?

The club has confirmed Corey is contracted and will play on.
Chapman is very close to signing a deal and has stated he wants to play another two seasons.
Enright recently signed a one year deal.

Podsiadly? J Hunt?

When did enright sign up?
I would have picked him as a possibility to call it quits.

Pods has said he wants to go on. J Hunt has no reason to give it away after his form this year.
I thought Corey would have called it a day.

Wojo will retire, and Byrnes is looking at Melbourne.

I think Corey will consider it, despite his contract for next year, and it'll be his call either way. It may depend on our trade week-if we get a midfielder or two he might see the competition coming in and call time. We also don't know how bad his knee may or may not be. But he'd be the one I'd be betting on.

It seems Enright will play on (good) and you'd expect both Hunt and Pods will probably do likewise. I suppose Hunt might see Guthrie coming up behind him and think about it, but I think he's the type to back himself to keep his spot, and Pods is the type to be happy going back to a coaching and mentoring role when a kid eventually takes his spot, so there's no reason for him to retire now.

Hawk might have just been referring to Wojo and maybe Byrnes if he doesn't want to start all over again at another club. I don't think any of the other AFL regulars will retire, but I could be wrong.

Very late I know but...

Just wanted to post my love for this guy. Legend of our great club, future hall of famer and owner of the greatest toe-poke to ever be seen in the AFL!!

God bless you Matty, thanks for the memories.

And when Bart sells his soul. Homer with head stuck in the bannister while getting repeatedly bitten on the arse by santas little helper because of his greed for floor pie is great vision.

Here's how funny the Simpsons is. My 12 year old kid's first language isn't English but he has watched every episode for the first ten seasons and can do all the voices and quote large slabs of the dialog. Rates it as the funniest thing he's ever seen.
