I had an awesome seat about 20 rows back, right on the 50m arc. But I left it vacant and stood in the bar from quarter time onwards. Broke the seal at half time. Went for a dart, grabbed a four'n'twenty on my back in and headed back to the bar for more beer. All in all, I had a pretty good day, caught up with a few old friends, watched a few minutes of a boring game of football and kicked on afterwards and had a blinder. I woke up on Sunday morning, lying on my couch at home with no memory. Hopefully this helps you out with your survey. Glad to be of service. F++K the Pies. Hopefully you were one of those who missed out on a ticket.

There are 60,000 full MCC members and 22,000 seats and 2,000 standing room.
They ballot 12,000 seats for the Grand final.
This means that there are 12,000 seats and standing room for 48,000 people so 1 in 4 can attend. The MCC have to play with probability if they get it wrong you have some very irate members who have paid to attend the Grand Final or you have some irate onlookers. The MCC would rather look after their paying customer then the people who sit outside the MCC fences.

If the vacant places had been in standing room no one would have cared. Just because they were all near each other people made a fuss. How many spare seats were there around the rest of the ground, how many AFL members didn’t turn up, how many corporate boxes weren’t at full capacity, how many team members didn’t turn up? Because the AFL members and Team member’s seats are all allocated seats people sit right up the top while in the MCC people instead of sitting right up the top would rather stand down lower or in a bar.

The MCC have previously made a mistake by over allocating tickets they did it for the Collingwood vs Geelong final in 2007 (I think) there was a lock out of full members and they do not want to repeat this and especially don’t want to repeat this on a Grand Final day.

Yes there is an issue when people don’t turn up but that is the same for people right around the ground it’s just more visible in the MCC. The week before was basically a sell out in the members with all seats gone at 9:30am. The MCC could only expect a similar turn out this week to expect anything different would be to the determent of the people who have full memberships and therefore the option to either attend or not attend the game. The difference between the 100,000 at week one of the finals and the 93,000 at week two is not solely the fault of the MCC it lies with all members etc.

I would be more interested to see how many tickets were sold rather than the number of people who attended because the number of tickets sold in the MCC is 60,000 for only 24,000 spots.

The MCC has served its purpose and it is time for it to go.

The MCG is built on crown land the majority of money for redevelopments come from the state and federal governments.

It's time for the AFL as the major tenant of the MCG to take over the roll of ground manager that is currently performed by the MCC

The crowd was approximately 7,000 down on capacity, that surely didn't all come from the MCC.

Why isn't there a thread dedicated to other areas of the ground that weren't 100% full?

Because I would assume ratio wise, the MCC had the highest amount missing. Plus when you see it all clumped together it just looks worse.

Missing maybe, but the tickets were still (indirectly) sold.

Chewy, I went, and had one of the best days of my life. I'm glad you had a good time as well. I was lucky enough to be able to buy a ticket with my 18 game Collingwood membership. And I'm lucky enough to be able to afford such a membership. Shared a fantastic moment with my old man and my sister. Feel very privileged to have been there on such a beautiful day. It's just a shame that many other people who were just as deserving as myself couldn't find a ticket, because people like you spent the afternoon acting like...people like you.

My issue is with the walk-up policy adopted by the MCC. Of course lots of members who went last week couldn't go this week - that's 100% fair enough. But when the rest of the ground's allocation was sold out on Wednesday (I think!), it's just absurd that so many seats could go to waste. There were hundreds of desperate fans outside requesting tickets, and no doubt tens of thousands more at home who would have killed to be there.

You MCC members pay your membership and deserve most of your rights - granted. But the entitled, holier than thou attitude displayed by some of you is so disappointing. If you're the type of person who seems to be proud of the fact that you being the "to watch a few minutes of a boring game" means that a real fan misses out, there's something seriously wrong with you. But the world will always be full of ********s, I guess.

Yep i'm a full MCC member and thought it was disgraceful, that there was so many seats for a football game free, and people outside who were desperate to get in. It makes no sense.

Restricted members should have been granted FREE access like full members, once it was clear it wasn't going to be filled. I've been to enough games to be able to predict when it is and isn't going to be full. And it was clear by 10:30am that it wasn't going to get full, and they still announced that restricted members would not be granted access.

Why not let full members have their crack, and say by 12pm, restricted members can enter if there is still capacity. Full members would know, ok, i have to arrive before 12 and scan my card. They could have a separate queue for restricted members, and the scanners only accepted restricted memberships from 12pm onwards.

Simple!! You'd have a fair system that results in full capacity every GF.

Get your act together MCC!

One of the most ridiculous things I have read on bigfooty.

Because there was 3,000 seats and about 1,000 standing room available in the MCC from a capacity of about 24,000 while from the other 76,000 avaible spaces only 3,000 where empty. Where I was sitting there was not an empty seat anywhere in the vicinity. The only empty seats I could see was in the top tier of the Members and there appeared to be small group in the pocket and the city end.

The MCC was 83% full
The rest of stadium 96% full

The solution is incredibly simple, where it is expected that the members will be full make it 100% pre-allocated. Don't wait until the morning of the game to distribute tickets not allocated in the ballot, do it the Monday after the prelim. If demand is less than expected then they can open up access to restricted members later in the week.

Nup, won't happen. Members pay over $500 a year so that they can be guaranteed a good seat at the Grand Final. All you have to do is get up early enough on the Saturday morning. The ballot and purchasing tickets on the net/at Ticketek is about luck. The MCC stuffed up their decision not to let Restricted Members in at 10:30, but the policy is a good one.

THere are a number of people that I know decided at 1pm that they would walk up to the gate at 2pm because it wasn't getting filled. THey thought it would be sold out and couldn't be bothered lining up at 4am again to watch the game.

COuld you imagine the uproar when the restricted members have been let in and those walk up members couldn't get in because of 5000 restricted members taking up the space?

I waited for my full membership to come and I am happy that I have the ability to go to the Grand Final. It should be a reward and the restricted members should have to wait for that privilage.

I reckon the solution to this would be to keep about 300 seats unavailable to Restricted members. Full Members who want to rock up at 2:30 would still be able to get in. The MCC should know that they won't double the number of walk-ups who have entered before 10:30. Or 9:00 for that matter.

No they don't. Members pay to be able attend all (most) sporting event at the MCG as well as the increased probability of attending the Grand Final, there is no guarantee of gaining entrance let alone a good seat.
When it comes down to it, for every MCC member that would cease to be a member because of a change to the Grand Final ticketing arrangement there would be at least a dozen people on the waiting list ready to take their place.

The current system is stupidly inefficient and changes need to be made to ensure that the capacity is utilised to its fullest extent.

To a degree. The MCC should be experienced enough to know when Full Members are likely to fill the stadium. It was patently obvious on Saturday Morning that this wasnt going to happen. They could easily have let 1000 to 2000 tickets go to Restricted Members at $255 a pop without affecting the chances of Full Members access to the game. Its not as if 7000 Full Members were suddendly going to rock up at 2pm....
