Verbally threatening to rape someone, whether said in jest or not, is going way too far. As a result, a week off and a $2000 fine is perhaps not going far enough as a punishment.

And threatening to kill said person is water off a ducks back yeah? Get off it...

It's a ridiculously stupid and disgraceful piece of crap sledging. But to be honest, now that it has come out public I think that's probably punishment enough for McGinnity..

Don't forget that Petterd allegedly threatened to travel to Perth and kill McGinnity first. Why is he not in trouble. I think the return sledge was a good one and should have stayed on the field.

He didn't just come out and start with it he returned fire.

A lot of people seem to be of the opinion that the comments made by McGinnity were perfectly ok.

If the comments were made on the football field, but near the boundary within earshot of the crowd and kids in the crowd, would that have been ok as well?

I guess you would have no trouble telling your kids that its perfectly ok to say that kind of thing if they happened to hear it?

When I first read that a player was being sanctioned for sledging about some ones mum I was disgusted and could not believe the how sanitised the game had become. I have played a lot of football myself and every 2nd sledge out there is I just finished @ ur mommas or Im heading to ur mums after the game. to me this is acceptable banter & 1 would have to be overly precious to be offended by it.

But in light of what was allegedly said as reported by the herald this morning I am totally comfortable with the penalty and believe this is crossing the line.

Agreed. A death threat > a rape threat. If McGinnity took it serious Petterd could face jail time.

Responding to "I'll kill you." with "I'll rape your mum" is totally appropriate?

Post of the year

Perhaps it is worthy of more punishment, whether said in jest or not. I actually think claiming to rape someone's mum is pretty heinous.

But what about Petterd's threats to fly over to Perth and kill McGinnity?

For the record, now that the Herald Sun has these allegations that McGinnity threatened to rape Petter's mother, I'm more comfortable with the one week suspension.

Lol what is apparent from this thread is it is absolutely amazing the number of West Coast supporters who have a warped sense of reality

I am not really sure that it's a competition!

Most people would laugh off a 'I'm going to kill you' and call him a w***er. That gets said to me every weekend in my job.

Threatening to rape someones mum says a lot about the person who said it.

Mind you I think that this should have all been kept in house. Poor kid is going to have to live with it for the rest of his football career. Obviously said in the heat of the moment.

So if someone threatened to kill you you'd be okay with it?

McGinnity deserved his suspension if it turns out he threatened to rape Petterd's mother, but seriously, why is he being singled out here? Why isn't Petterd being punished for a death threat? Is it because we laugh off death threats yet somehow take rape threats seriously?

It depends on who you are. If someone said they would rape my Mum to me on the footy field I wouldnt care as I know they didnt mean it and were just trying to piss me off. I hear similar stuff in my workplace. If McGinnity gets fined/suspended for it so be it. The fact that Petterd couldnt take it like a man says a lot about him and it only adds to Melbournes soft image. There would be sledges every game you just dont hear about them and definitely dont see players dobbing others in.

If you take the rape threat seriously on the football field (lol) then you must take the death threat seriously as well. That is the absurd logic of the AFL but it is what it is.

thats not the point. everyone knows mcginnity wasnt going to go and rape his mum. and everyone knows petterd wasnt going to kill mcginnity and yet they are treated differently. why is one comment seen as a bit of haha and the other as though he was actually going to go and do it.

i am not defending what mcginnity did. he shouldnt have said that. and most people think that. but its treated as though mcginnity was actually going to go and do it.

A lot of hot air in here. Most of it came out prior to what we now believe was said.

FWIW, certain Melbourne supporters bringing up possible health issues with the mother without a shred of evidence, and then others running with it as fact? Silly.

Ricky Petterd threatening to fly over to Perth and kill McGinnity? Even more silly.

McGinnity responding that if Petterd was going to kill him, then he'd rape his mother? Stupid.

Snowballing into what we have now? Amazingly ludicrous.

Patrick McGinnity is the kid who had his jaw caved in by Nick Maxwell in a pre-season match and shook it off as simply "shit happens". For this kid, who's a bloody hard nut, what happens in between those boundary lines is a life different to what happens outside them. I'm not saying that standards should disappear and everything becomes a free-for-all, but it's a different life for two and a half hours each week.

Does that excuse what he said? Not at all. Does he deserve suspension? No. Fine him, that's not a problem. Let him know that what he said wasn't on. But a week's suspension? Doesn't sit right with me (no matter what team they play for). For what it's worth, I thought the Sherman incident was far worse. To go out of your way to racially abuse a kid for an entire match when it was the kid's first game and get only four weeks was absurd. But that's done, move on. Sherman has to live with his words and so will McGinnity.

At least we now know that making death threats on the field is just considered mindless banter.

No, it would not.

I tell people I will kill them all the time (well, not all the time) when I'm pissed off at them.

I don't tell them I'm going to rape their mum.

There's a line there somewhere.

And everybody has a different line.

If Petterd instigated it by threatening to kill McGin, he's an absolute bitch for crying about him retaliating.

Or is it ok because Petterd didn't actually intend to kill him?

McGinnity, 22, told West Coast, which investigated the case and imposed the sanctions, that Petterd had made threats to travel to Perth and "kill" him.

Isn't this a criminal offence?

Petterd is lucky McGinnity isn't a huge sook like he is; otherwise he could get the Police involved.

Petterd opened the can of worms.
