well, well, well...

So now that everybody knows what was actually said, the outrage has lessened and people can understand the weeks suspension. How about that! I hate to say I told you so, but...

the outrage ITT is hilarious.

No-one knows what's been said, so they make the assumption that it's something trivial; rather than the vastly more likely option that it's actually something serious enough to warrant a suspension.

Occams Razor be damned.

I told you so.

Where do you work where it's normal to hear someone say "I'm going to rape your mother"?

This is the issue.

The AFLPA want to keep crapping on about industry standards and what everyone else gets, they have to accept what McGinnity said wouldn't be acceptable in any workplace.

I think everyone can agree Pettard is a little bitch (except some demon, supporters).

And, that some people on here live under a rock. Seriously, Pettard obviously didn't intend to kill Mcginnity and Mcginnity obviously didn't intend on raping Pettards mum. It's sledging, it's been happening in all sports for many many years. It's a big bad world out there!

Well put...guys like Pettard are ruining a great part of competitive sport which is sledging. I have heard just as bad things said in juniors and I didnt see the kids run crying to the umpire because his mummy got insulted. I think Pettard is the one that has to grow up.

Here's how this thread will play out:

WCE fans will think it's a joke and PC gone too far
Melbourne fans will think the book should be thrown at him
Everyone else will sit on either side of the fence.

771 posts later and I can now revise this:

WCE fans will think Petterd threatened him first, which caused McGinnity to make his unsavoury remarks.
Melbourne fans will think it was all McGinnity's fault and that Petterd's comments (if they happened at all) were just friendly banter
Everyone else will sit on either side of the fence.

Because people who haven't been in that situation have no concept of how on-field sledging should be taken, or what it's designed to achieve. Regardless of whether it's at AFL level or country footy... it goes on at all levels.

It's a means of getting under one's skin, to put weak minded opponents off their game, regardless of the filth they resort to. Nothing more.

Anyone who has played competitive sport would know this. People who haven't played footy past the U11's wouldn't.

By strong minded people of course.

There are many things we once thought to be O.K. but were then educated to realize they're actually not.

The question is there again:
How does sledging improve our game of football?
Answering that it's a part of football, just isn't a fact. It's not laid out as a prerequisite to playing the game.

You and I have very different definitions of "real men". I think i'll leave it at that.

Your 2nd point is a seperate issue. For starters your club, not the AFL suspended McGinnity. I applaud them for doing that. My club could have suspended Petterd if they thought his comments inappropriate. They didn't, and I applaud them for that.

In my opinion the sledges a poles apart. What Ricky said, would be said regularly on the park and is well within the line of what is acceptable. Others will have different opinions as to where that line of acceptability is.

So i'm quite satisfied as to why McGinnity received punishment, while Petterd did not.

I expect your club probably felt he was simply a victim in all of this.

It really wouldn't matter if they where "poles apart" - it is now a matter of he said she said so Pettard should be dealt with.

I told you so.

WTF are you on about? Whose outrage has lessened? Who can understand the suspension?

You maybe but not me!

It really wouldn't matter if they where "poles apart" - it is now a matter of he said she said so Pettard should be dealt with.

But why?

As i've said - it was West Coast, not the AFL that gave out the punishment.

And if your outraged that McGinnity was punished for making a comment on the field (under your "real men" argument), wouldn't you be similarly outraged that Petterd would also be punished for making a comment on the field?

Don't forget that Petterd allegedly threatened to travel to Perth and kill McGinnity first. Why is he not in trouble. I think the return sledge was a good one and should have stayed on the field.

He didn't just come out and start with it he returned fire.

Yeah, way to take the moral high ground.

A lot of people seem to be of the opinion that the comments made by McGinnity were perfectly ok.

If the comments were made on the football field, but near the boundary within earshot of the crowd and kids in the crowd, would that have been ok as well?

I guess you would have no trouble telling your kids that its perfectly ok to say that kind of thing if they happened to hear it?

I have a feeling that the majority of posters excusing the use of McGinnity's sledge have no kids. Its a shame there is no way of ensuring that the status quo remains.

Lol what is apparent from this thread is it is absolutely amazing the number of West Coast supporters who have a warped sense of reality

Agreed. Apparently Petterd is a whiny little bitch for snitching, while McGinnity is a man's man because he threatened to rape somebody's mother.

*Cue misplaced righteous indignation.*

Looks like some WCE supporters have learnt nothing from their years as a disgrace and pariah of the AFL.

Instead of sharpening their moral compass they've just chiselled away at that chip on their shoulder.

Big fish, small pond. Grow up people.

This. :thumbsu:

Pettard started it!!!

Christ.

A lot of people are paying out Petterd for being soft, yet we've got some of the most childish, schoolyard rubbish being thrown around in this thread. The West Coast Eagles fans in this thread are acting pretty petulantly about the whole thing. Yeah, there might be a double standard in the AFL. So what? What are you gonna do about it? Cry and moan? Really. Grow up. It is what it is, it's be settled by Petterd and McGinnity. Quit trying to get some sort of moral reparation because you feel so utterly aggrieved, when really, there's more important things to worry about that.

It's seriously shocking to see the naivety of some people freaking out to a 1 week suspension. Are we not forgetting the AFL PR buzz-word that is womens rights? Is anyone really that surprised given the schoolgirl and Andrew Lovett issues? No wonder the Eagles put the foot down as hard as they did

Where do any of us work where we have to wear tight shorts and sleeveless tops while keeping a top level of physical fitness?

Oh wait - are any of us male strippers??

Unfortunately, there are some pretty prudish and politically correct folk out there who think the AFL is a sanitised workplace just like any other.

Isnt threatening to kill a criminal offence?

Didn't petterd threaten to kill McGinnity? Why isnt this taken further? Thats right bc it shouldnt be taken out of context, it was said on the footy field in an exchange of banter in the heat of the moment... he obviously wasnt serious about it.

wait what?

This is an incredibly pathetic over reaction. Petterd is a skirt, the AFL are going full steam ahead with operation propaganda bc of all the recent rumours/innuendo/ rape trials involving afl footballers and the AFL brand. Pathetic deflection and so many do gooders on here applauding it. Gullible

You can really tell who has and hasnt played footy or sport at a reasonable level by reading some of these comments.

AFL is officially dead to me now.

Threatening to kill someone is as bad as a comment about someone's Mum.

Neither should have anything to answer for, this shit happens all the time on the footy field and in other sports :/

Mmm, yes, unsavoury ... great word because it's sort of accurate, but completely underplays the disgusting nature of the comment.

Mmm, that cracker with salmon, cream cheese and dill was a savoury delight!!! Oh, and that comment about r***ping you mother was a bit unsavoury.

There's a LOT that is said on the footy field, and allowed to go past, including the comment Petterd made to McGinnity, which is pretty ordinary too. The key differences between the two comments: Petterd's was between the two, McGinnity involved another; McGinnity's was disgusting.

McGinnity's comment is beyond the pale and the response by AFL, club, and players is right.

Just a pity some don't get it, still.

If everyone 'understands it' then this is no longer a world in which I feel comfortable to live.

You can really tell who has and hasnt played footy or sport at a reasonable level by reading some of these comments.

AFL is officially dead to me now.

I can't see the problem.
Look past your nose and you'll see clubs telling their players to quit the verbal jousting and just concentrate on the football.
It's just not worth the slip of a tongue

We won't know the difference from where we sit, so what's the big deal?

My god. If everything I have been called on a cricket field had been put in the papers, the sport would be abolished.

Racism should be stopped, and I have no problem at all with that being a sensitive issue. But apart from that, just deal with it yourself.

McGinnity might be a bonehead, but at least he fights his own battles.

This is not hard to understand if you view sport as a relic/replacement for our hunter gatherer lifestyle for tens of thousands of years, not only were there harsh conditions and fierce predators but rival tribes would regularly raid other tribes for their women (rape) and food

No quarter was given or expected, you did what it took to win because you either died or lost your family and your rivals genes were passed down instead of yours

Is it any wonder football exhibits a win at all cost mentality and women are seen as the spoils of war?

The game will always struggle to accommodate sports true function while maintaining a civilized standard.

Such sledging designed to get under the skin of 'weak' opponents was one acceptable - but so was racial slurs. You can call them soft, but attacks on families or race is for the Neanderthals. Just focus on getting the ball.
