Unsurprising really.

Most of the commentary I've heard in the Melbourne media (SEN/AFL 360) follows the usual follow the leader motherhood statement narrative.

"They're crap and it's all their own fault and they need to fix their culture and why should they get a PP or any other help?'cause they won three Premierships 13 years ago and there are Melbourne Clubs what haven't won any for 50 years and they have to go through pain like everyone else and they can just suck it up"

And those who trot out all these vague generalisations never actually come up with any cogent, constructive suggestions.

I actually disagree with this, especially on SEN - I feel most of the presenters are sympathetic to our cause and keep advocating the AFL take action to help.

Feel footy classified is the same, most of that panel sympathise.

I am actually happy with both media and public sentiment, people are realising this mess is not sustainable long term and we are starting to create a bit of guilt in the industry.

Reading over Sausages thread on the main board 90% of posters want us helped, the media is refecting that sentiment for mine.

You will gain nothing of value by looking to 95% of the Melbourne media for thoughtful, considered and insightful commentary on the Brisbane Lions.

We are seen as a cardboard cutout of a club. They see a basic faded facade and don't really care to look behind it to see that the whole thing is just held together by sticks, wax paper and gaffer tape.

Also keep in mind that half of the Melbourne media would struggle to find Brisbane on a map, let alone gain a deep understanding of its sporting, political and business environment.

Listening to most Melbourne media talk about the Brisbane Lions is like listening to Donald Trump talk about his deep understanding and appreciation of Mexican culture.

I don't agree with that and I don't think you can put all the Melbourne media into one basket. I'm a football media junkie and spend many hours listening to football media here in Melbourne across the week. Caroline Wilson, some commentators from SEN and some from 3aw are sympathetic to us and feel we need support from the AFL and support in the coaching department. Caroline Wilson tonight on Footy Classified and today on aw was looking at the whole picture and the need for support. Others such as Barrett, Ralph take a more dramatic look and preach from the Leppa is gone book of hymns. Today on sen one of the reporters, "scoop Maclure" said how he had contacted many of our players managers today and all said their players were happy at Brisbane which brought up the question as to what is then going on, is it a coaching issue, questions re our list, etc etc. Which is no doubt a question many of us have. However the majority of the media here in Melbourne believe there is cause for concern as to our situation. Can't disagree with that. I think we have some sensationalist football reporters, but we also have some good thoughtful football journalist who see the importance of the national game and want to explore why a club in the AFL such as ours is performing so badly.

Agree, you want expert and considered opinion don't listen or read Melbourne Media.

In terms of the plight of our club and the continued horrid performances it looks pretty clear to me that Leppa will be lucky to make the end of year. I think the lack of a competitive football department spend, and poor facilities has got to be getting the guys down. Add the ups and downs in individual performances it is hard to see how we are going to improve under Leppa from here.

Decent training and administration facilities in what is supposed to be a professional operation is the bare minimum anyone should expect.

I don't entirely blame Leppa, at end of last year I thought we were improving.

There is a sense of Malthouse and Carlton lurking and even us as supporters/members have a Carlton 2015 about us. I hope it can turnaround for Leppa and us but get the feeling it ain't gonna happen.

Brisbane Lions in line for $1.4m helping hand from AFL to boost football department spending

BRISBANE will miss out on a priority pick this season but could receive a $1.4 million cash injection to help it top up its football department spending.

The besieged Lions are riding a horror eight-game losing streak with coach Justin Leppitsch under the pump and the club debt rising.

But at the most recent meeting of club chief executives there was general consensus the AFL might bridge the gap between football department spending levels.

The Lions pay about $8 million, $1.4 million less than the $9.4 million football department cap instituted under equalisation measures.

The league told clubs it would cost $14 million to fund that gap across the competition’s 18 clubs with CEOs in agreement that was a priority.

It would allow clubs like Brisbane to hire extra development coaches, spend money on facilities and gain parity with the AFL’s power clubs.
Brisbane football director Leigh Matthews admitted “there’s a lot of things that are really not right about the Lions’ operation”.

The Lions have stemmed the bleeding after an exodus of players but many that left cited poor facilities and lack of coaches and development.

Brisbane chief executive Greg Swann said that financial remedy was the most likely off-field source of help from the AFL.

The Lions have a $13 million debt — roughly half of that borrowed from the AFL — with some believing the AFL should clear all club debt with its TV revenue windfall.

Brisbane hopes a run of late wins will mean it does not have to again submit a priority pick request to the AFL.

But the Herald Sun understands the AFL Commission believes priority picks are for extraordinary or tragic circumstances including the death of players.

It does not believe one or two poor years see a team qualify for an extra selection before the first round of the AFL draft.

Former Brisbane assistant Wayne Brittain hit out at Leppitsch and Swann, who inherited many of the issues when he arrived midway through 2014.

“Yeah, (Leppitsch is) definitely under pressure,” said Brittain on SEN radio.

“I don’t find it unfair because the team is very much performing poorly, but the whole club is performing poorly, it’s not just Justin Leppitsch that should be under pressure.

“Greg Swann should be under enormous pressure as well, their club’s just running at a massive loss, they’ve got no corporate support and their facilities are average.

“It shouldn’t just be Leppa copping the flack up here.”

Extraordinary cirumstances= Justin Clarke forced out of the game due to concussion?
Only player deaths apparently... a forced retirement and a death is the same end result for the footy club. I know its a sensitive thing to say but at the end of the day the club still loses the player. I hope they at least consider Clarkes forced retirement but I doubt we will get a PP though.

Key phrase there is "including"

Implies to me that there's larger scope there.

On another note

This financial assistance seems pretty huge; how far will it go in terms of support staff and facilities

Why do the opinions of WB get so much airplay?

Failed Carlton coach, failed Assistant coach under Frawley's reign at the Tigers, sacked Windsor-Zillmere coach and failed Assistant under Vossy.

Just comes across as a bitter old man wanting to have a vent,

Browny said:
"The Lions were hung out to dry. I don't want to to stick up for my old club too much but the Lions were hung out to dry with being given the second hardest draw in the first half of the competition," Brown told Fox Footy on Monday night.

"That is a disgrace from the people at the AFL who made that draw. They've given the Lions' so-called easy games on the road, with a young list. So fix it up, for Christ's sake because it was an absolute disgrace going into the season like that."

I'm not saying it's exact figures but that's another ten clubs getting a similar boost as well. So as much it would be greatly appreciated it also makes some of our competitors stronger. Not sure if the article should have been so Lions focused but more about equalisation across the league.

Watched the segment on AFL 360 last night. It was good to see some Lions content and for them to let rip on us a bit, but in saying that I'd be highly surprised if either of them has watched more than 2 of our games this year......or know more than 6 of our players

We need to use that 1.4 mill on a senior assistant for leppa. Ratten or someone. Need to get better help around leppa.

Leppa cleaned out the playing list, last year he cleaned out the support staff, next should be his coaching panel.

I get the impression (this is just my opinion) that he isnt overly keen on any senior support.

Well then this is where swan and lethal step in.

$1.4 mil is equal to about two years interest repayments on the debt that we owe the AFL. It would be better if they forgave most or all of the debt or restructured it so that it wasn't such a burden.

From Andrew Hamilton - "They (Lions) need to dangle a big name to the market — Daniel Rich, Pearce Hanley or Stefan Martin would be the obvious ones, to see if they can’t improve their list."

I asked him how they would 'dangle' Rich given that he's on a multi-year contract. His reply - "So was Redden". o_O

How exactly does one dangle another person?

I love the whole idea of 'oh we're shit, let's get rid of our better contributors'

I can vouch first hand for that when he was coach at Windsor Zillmere

I don't know if they're the same people on here but on one hand I've seen calls for "a total cleanout....trade em' all!!!" and on the other, wailing and gnashing of teeth about lack of on-field leadership.

Critics can't have it both ways.

But yes, I agree getting rid of a large chunk of your better, more experienced players to get draft picks makes little sense to me.

We have enough skinny, underdeveloped kids on our list already.
