The below is the bit I took away. Despite a horrible season, the club collectively held together as an organisation and it should hold us in good stead as the climb back up the ladder begins

We expected much more going into the season and while obviously disappointed with the on-field results, with just three wins I was also quite proud of the way we stuck together and did not fracture despite the pressure.

He’s talking about off field

Usually when clubs have the sort of year(s) we had there’s a lot of infighting and malcontent that destabilises the club. For the most part that didn’t happen and as a group they largely stuck together

If we’re to find a way out the club needs to be united so that everyone is pulling in the right direction. I think that’s been evident in the training pre Christmas

Would've liked to read something along the lines of how the level of performance during 2023 was unacceptable at times by this club and not what we want to stand for as a playing group/club and ownership of 2023 etc but I am disappointed.

No mention in the Chairs address or CEO's either.

The best thing to come out of 2023 was Pyke being appointed as CEO. Either Simmo pulls his finger out or he will be gone next year. Pyke won't stand for the type of rubbish that was thrown up this year.

With that in mind, I don't really care what they say publicly about 2023. The proof will be in their actions. If we have another poor year, the footy department will be cleaned out and we'll hit the draft hard again.

Our performances were reflective of barely being able to field an AFL calibre side for much of the season. Do you really expect Simmo to say that is "not what we want to stand for" when most of the issues were out of his control?

Keen to know what happened behind closed doors considering we seem to have replaced a decent number of off-field staff. Did the club really stick together while the broom swept through?

I just find it hard to believe that the club was united over the last few years. Since covid really.

Hopefully we now are.

doesn't matter what's said all that matters is injuries and continuity of players on field.

Get majority of players to be fit to play all season we'll get a better look at things.

You can't judge on field it's just been bubble n squeak

I accepted this last year but I don't think it holds as much water this year.

How can we lose by 101 pts at home to Fremantle in round 22 only to beat the Bulldogs at Etihad the following round who had everything to play for in terms of Finals... with 19 of the 22 being the same (Maric, Trew and Petruccelle all in for the Dogs game).

Just one example of effort being the week-to-week variable as opposed to the lack of 'availability'.

Or maybe Maric is a 100pt differential player. and we have the next Judd.. whose to say

Our low point was the back half of 2021 when we went from contending for a top 4 spot to missing finals altogether. Part of the problem was rushing back the stars from injury after a fighting win against Richmond that unsettled team balance. Fractures that began in the first hub, opened up completely and we finished the season badly

Graham and Hickmott both left at the end of that year, replaced by Schofield and Knights

If you remember, Simpson made some pointed remarks at the 2021 B&F about having each others backs and needing to work together. I don’t think the club was a happy place

Despite our onfield woes in 2022/23 there hasn’t been a lot of public bitching emanating from the club

There have been departures of off field staff but Rioli was the only player to ask to be traded out. No player, or officials, have said anything derogatory about the club after they’ve left that I’m aware of. Even someone like Greg Clark who had cause to be a bit miffed at his treatment was supportive of the club after he was delisted

As for the officials who have left :
• Nisbett was always going to leave by the end of 2024 and his imminent departure has been respectful
• O’Brien was being talked about retiring over 12 months ago and has been at the club for 30 years or thereabouts. He was due to leave
• The S&C department needed an overhaul with fresh eyes and that change has been done without any apparent bitterness from either club or individuals
• Pratt had been at the club for 10 years as an assistant which is a solid stint and a change is a good career move for him

As much as the west would like to have us believe we’re a divided club that leaks like a sieve, many of their scoops have proven to be false

The camaraderie between the young players is obvious

It’d be naive to think everybody at the club is happy but there’s no evidence to suggest that there’s widespread morale issues which I think is quite remarkable all things considered

We probably should've lost to the Dogs too. The thing is that was a good performance from a team mostly made up of rookies and fringe players who are not consistently good, so I don't find the difference in performance across those two weeks all that surprising.

Would you rather loose 1 game by 170 points or have a 20 year finals drought?

Can I get this in annual finishing ladder position graph format for comparison?

As I've mentioned here before if you're going to be good you want to be very good and if you're going to be bad you may as well be very bad. If you want to be at either end you must expect the other eventually. Camping out between the peaks and troughs is no man's land.

Just read your own post and you'll be happy as a lark.

More contested, tougher midfield will help I reckon.

Less walking it out the middle

That was the let down in some of those blow outs. Didn't have the cavalry to roll through there and the coaches (rightly, in my opinion) didn't want to deviate from the new game plan just to protect the margins and stem the flow.

Surely stemming the flow is part of a game plan?

We had a few games last season where we did ok for three quarters and the game blew out in one quarter. Then we had the big blow-outs.

There was, imo, a lack of leadership on the field in those blow-outs. Injuries didn't help, but putting pressure on the ball is basic football and we should have been able to at least make it difficult for the opposition.

Maybe having a captain in each third of the field - Oscar up front, Duggan in the middle and Barrass down back - will help with this.

Depends on how you stem the flow. Simmo had mentioned he didn't want to park the bus in the back half just to choke up scoring opportunities as that's not how we want to play long term.

Fastest way to stem the flow is to win the ball at the source and get it going your way. We were unable to do that or put any pressure on the ball and subsequently we leaked a lot of easy inside 50s to the oppo and got exposed.
