Cant wait for tomorrow's riveting article: "West Coast R Bad. But Y? Suma Good!"
You are priobably right. But footy clubs and players live in a bubble so tight that they should avoid opinions on complex matters that are outside their bubble. The club has taken a position in regards to a contentious issue for some. In that light it is a legitimate topic to discuss on this board.

I live media free but I get your drift. The media coverage this week has been absurd. Aside from perhaps the extent of our injury list there has been nothing surprising about this year to any of us. The media is desperate for the yearly club in meltdown story, and of course the Worst is all over it with their Facebook level analysis but I think they will be disappointed when no drama actually happens.

With all the rage bait going around about us in the last few days this one from McKenna went under the radar by the looks.
Very well written and on point and spot on.

West Coast legend Guy McKenna says Eagles in for years of pain as part of long-term rebuild
West Coast legend Guy McKenna has called for patience, predicting a few more years of pain for the Eagles as they go through a rebuild like no other in their history.
The Eagles have won just three of their past 33 games and are coming off an embarrassing 108-point loss to Carlton at Optus Stadium on Saturday night.
McKenna, who is a two-time premiership Eagle, said the list was not in good shape as they try to rebuild from a successful era.
“If you go past a house being built, there’s a lot of s… on the building site. It looks messy, it looks crazy. You see little growth, all those types of things. And that’s where the Eagles’ list is at the moment,” McKenna said.
“That’s born of the recent success of the club, and the past recruiting and all that sort of stuff.
“There’s no good thing, apart from the fact that it’s all going to be a work in progress. It’s clearly not ideal now. But there’s, there’s sort of planting the seeds, if you like, or clearing the worksite and getting ready to lay a foundation.”
McKenna said there was no quick fix for West Coast, with a focus needed to be on growth in younger talent.
“Everyone thinks just redo the list and we’ll be right in two years get a couple of plays in, Tim Kelly is going to be the answer and all that sort of stuff,” McKenna said.
The scoreboard was painful viewing for West Coast fans on Saturday night. AFL Photos
“It hurts me, of course, because I bleed blue and yellow. It hurts me to see them lose, but I’m not too worried about the scoreboard, I just want to see these kids.
“The next two years are going to be fairly painful for West Coast supporters because they’ve been used to what they’ve been used to, well guess what? The rules of the AFL have certainly caught up with them.
“It’s probably the first time in the club’s history that this has happened but it’s happened.”
Essendon great Matthew Lloyd suggested coach Adam Simpson might be under pressure despite being contracted until the end of 2025.
“You have to admire loyalty in football clubs … I think Adam Simpson looks absolutely exhausted and maybe a fresh voice might be what the football club needs,” Lloyd told the Sunday Footy Show.
McKenna said Simpson wasn’t the problem and that no coach could do a better job given the situation.
“Put any coach in there and they’ll be having the same sort of results,” McKenna said.
“As long as you can see the kids developing that would be the only thing I would be judging Simmo on.
“It’s like growing trees or plants in a garden, it takes time and some years. Some shoot up pretty quick, the top-end talent. And if that’s been recruited properly you’ll see those kids.
“It’s just this nasty, nasty cycle they’re in. It’s going to take time for him to get out.
“And certainly from a coach’s point of view, all you want is your support from the board. And I’m sure everyone sat there and these are the decisions they made.
“I’m sure they all sat down and said, right, this is our direction, this is our pathway, and we’re all prepared to know that we’re probably going get a lot of punches on the nose for this.”
" a heavily regulated and equalised game“.......yeah ok Gil
Put it this way, giving him two years means we're likely to get just under one season's worth of games out of him. Should be good. As for the pay cut, hindsight would suggest that 2018 contract in itself may not have been worth it especially post 2019.Giving 2 years was probably fulfilling a request he had when he took a pay cut. I imagine he got us out of a pickle at the time.
Depends on the cost really. What could we buy instead of McGovern? I'd wager the club feels there's not going to be the opportunity to get anything better at the same cost, hence the extension.I don’t see it as a big deal, when fit he’s a genuinely good footballer and we have no real replacement for him ready to take his spot.

I don't understand this at all. Why is the bench on the field?
