Pretty good analysis I thought. Pretty alarming the assessment that we are a year behind Hawthorn in our development. Clearly still a lot of fans behind the Hawks slash and burn method.

He’s very astute and writes well.

And I think it’s common knowledge that he’s an ex poster on this board?

Nah, that doesn't generate the clicks.

"Weak Coast got scammed for Tim Kelly"
"Weak-gles train their players on concrete"
"Drug Coast have cultural problems"

What the Eagles can be blamed for is failing to recognise the changing trends of the game quickly enough, for failing to maximise a weak draft hand, for letting overall fitness standards dip in the wake of the 2018 premiership and for placing too much faith in the bodies of battle-weary veterans.

This should be the copied and pasted response for those seeking to attribute blame to the wrong parties. It's not Tim Kelly or Lathlain or Nisbett, at least not in isolation anyway. We just have to 'ride it out' as the author says and have faith in the process of rebuilding - because there really is no other option. Having perennially injured, fat or s*** senior players, adapting to a new faster game plan or accumulating top draft picks is something not rectified in a year or two.

FP, cmon mate this board is for melts and folding the club only. No perfectly reasonable ambient temp takes here

Is it really alarming that we're a year or two behind Hawthorn in terms of development? They've sucked for longer than we have and as such have more high draft picks with more games under their belts, despite handicapping themselves with some trades to try to stay up.

This was always going to be our dead-cat-bounce year in the pre-season before we fell away again, but seeing as the cat hit the pavement and hasn't budged an inch since, we're probably going to end up making up some ground rebuild wise.

A few of the injury prone elderly out, a few durable kids in, and next year will be much less dire.

I'm sick of people pointing the finger but not offering solutions. What should the club have done differently? The year we missed finals (2021) we hit the draft hard. There's no way we would have deliberately dropped in 2020 as we were a win (or %) off top 4. The only thing you can debate is the Kelly trade, but if you track who was drafted with the selections we gave up, there's no argument to say they'd make us better (for example: Cooper Stephens has already been delisted).

S&C is another story, it should be better and the club can cop blame for that. Though even if we had a fit list, maybe we would sit mid table and be like Richmond or Freo (so it could be a blessing in disguise).

We're in this mess mainly because we were up for a long time. We're joined in the bottom 4 by Hawthorn and Syndey also spent two years there in 2019 and 2020. It'll probably be a couple more seasons, but we'll get out soon enough.

Looking forward to it. Going to be a pretty miserable watch at home games this year. Be good to sing our terrible cursed song more than twice this year.

Warney was opinated but far from a FW.
Universally respected.

Sumo on the other hand is seen as a bit of a dunderhead.
Yep.
Warney was the best captain we never had. He definitely hurt his chances of captaincy with some stupid behaviour off-field, but on-field he was streets ahead of everyone else after Waugh went.

I was at Edgbaston in 2005 and when things were going badly only two (and a half) guys kept their heads up in the field. Gilly was Gilly but the two guys who stepped up were Langer and Warney. Except for the opening over from one end Warney bowled every over possible. And he kept geeing everyone up and kept his concentration.

And this was the match where the crowd were absolutely giving him hell because he'd just split from his wife. The constant chanting of 'Where's your missus gone? (Where's your missus gone?) Far, far away...' is still stuck in my head.

He may have been a knob at times but no-one worked harder on their game and no-one had the instinct of the game he had. Natural cricket leader.

How about we run with this😁
We have been a powerhouse club for so long it is an "Expected" way of being with us supporters
I.E winners and arrogant.
We have no character, as in, patience and understanding from many years at the bottom
Example, St Kilda, so this journey is to build those qualities in us, so it is good for us.
My story and I am sticking to it.

Let's not rewrite the history books because he died early. He had an astute cricket mind, but could also carry a grudge like no other. His commentary could be biased, he could spend an hour talking about pizza and not the cricket, people were pretty critical of his commentary in the dying days of Channel 9. That's not even taking into account the betting scandals, drugs scandal, cheating on his wife etc.

Seemed like a great bloke if he was your friend, I'll definitely give you that.

Pretty much. And then Chesser went down all last year. In fact with him we won't know what we have got for a couple of seasons at best. It's hard when you are used to success and rarely missing finals to go through a patch like we are currently going through. Still can't work out how Geelong keeps avoiding gravity like they do.
