He seems collected and in control. Worth the listen.

Yeah I think he looked really flat after the loss, understandably, so I get why there was talk about him being burned out. Especially with the Clarkson and Hardwick developments

But he came across really well and focused on what he’s trying to achieve

As he said in the interview last week was really hard to defend we need to be better than that. I am hopeful we will get that because if we don't we could get 3 coach killers in a row which would make his position even more difficult. It's up to the players now.

Simple minds I guess.

I get that it’s Eddie Maguire but this is an interesting listen. Very critical of the soft cap being too low and also talks about how they suffered a spate of soft tissue injuries when they first moved to their new training base until it all got bedded down

Different POV and does sound like he’s talked to people over here to get a handle on what’s being done

Also worth pointing out that at the very end he states that he’d swap places with Collingwood and West Coast right now if it meant they got the 2018 flag. Something that as supporters we shouldn’t lose sight of - it’s only been 4-5 years since we saw our team win and now it’s our turn at the bottom

Biggest issue with the soft cap (IMO) is the eye watering taxes teams have to pay for going over it.

MLB has it almost bang on (again, IMO). AFL taxes are about 2-3 times higher from memory.

Apologies for lack of link's but the exact figures are Googleable.

Question - where do large infrastructure projects fall in regards to the soft cap? It's ~7M a year but Collingwood lexus centre upgrade about a decade ago was 36M... Not sure if they contributed all of it or if it was part funded by public money... Surely these projects count outside the soft cap otherwise how are clubs going to invest in this direction? Clubs will be training in some very drab looking facilities in the 2030's.

Spending on facilities isn’t included in the soft cap

Many Vic clubs are supported by the state govt for infrastructure

Annoying thing about the soft cap is that it was reduced to manage costs during COVID... but reportedly, the AFL were also pissed at the amount of money being spent on coaches, which is why they've been so reluctant to lift it since. In other words, they've used COVID as an excuse to exercise an unrelated agenda.

I'm struggling to understand why the AFL would even care how much coaches get paid... other than... jealousy?

Probably coz they're directly keeping insolvent clubs afloat with their funding and want to have an underhanded way in deciding how/where their money is spent.

My understanding is the soft cap is only for the footy department - which is direct spend on the foot program. This includes Coaches, medical, equipment etc. I remember the WA clubs having to fight to make sure travel wasn't included.

I think everything else is outside. Marketing, corporate, recruiting (though I'm not sure about this one), administration. Capital expenditure is capital expenditure.
