I never used to be a big fan of co-captains, but I'm happy for Grimes and Jones to retain it. From memory Roos is too. Happy with everything else as you've listed it.

I don't think Jack Grimes stood up on the field, and I feel he deserves the demotion.

Your on-field criticism is probably fair, I'd like to see more from Grimes next year. But what about the off-field stuff? It's fairly likely that an article a la the Jones one could have been written wrt Grimes' off-field leadership qualities. Theres a lot that goes on behind closed doors that we don't get to see.

But what though? Literally everybody was sacked, and we only one two games. How much could he have contributed?

I have no idea. But despite looking at one stage like we may have had a mass exodus we managed to retain most of our players (Sylvia excluded). Who knows how much Jack influenced keeping a group of disgruntled players together?

Speculation, of course.

You make a really interesting point, but I wonder how much of that was due to Jackson and Roos. The likes of Brown, Black and Rockliff weren't able to influence the disgruntled Lions players with all the off-field turmoil that dragged on until the end of the trade period.

This year is so important for the club. If we can't lock-in Frawley and Hogan to long-term contracts what hope do we have of selling the club to sponsors and members?

Oh yeah I've got no doubt that they were really instrumental in that. What I guess I was getting at was that we'll never really know (until the mini-series comes out) what sort of off-field, behind closed doors kinda leader Jack is.

Make them all Captains . ;)
Seriously i think if we continue with the co-captains theme it should be N.Jones and D.Frawley . I would keep Trenners and Grimes in the leadership group and leave Garland as V.C.
Clark -Dawes- Cross and Viney in the leadership group and from left field Watts .

Aren't we trying to clear out the Spuds?

If Nathan Jones isn't captain next year I'll eat my hat.

Given how our last couple of captains have handled the job (and their footy with it) I'm not that keen for Jonesy to get it. Maybe Pedersen?

Jones will have so much more support in the midfield this year. That 'burden' taken off him means he will be able to handle the captaincy.

Garland is the only other play that I can say "yep, definitely put him in the leadership group".

Apart from those two, I have no idea. I don't want to put these things in the hands of the kids, they need to focus solely on improving their fitness, strength and footballing ability.

Of the older guys - Clark would be there but has too many uncertainties about his fitness. Frawley is a jet but doesn't seem to have a whole lot going on upstairs. Grimes has injury/form issues but does admittedly do everything right off-field. Dawes needs to focus on form. Byrnes, Pedersen, Dunn, Jamar are fringe best 22, so no thanks. Vince is an unknown.

Cross?

C Mitch Clark

VC Jones, Grimes

Leadership group Dawes, Garland, Frawley, Trengove.

Clark commands the most respect internally and externally. He is our best player and leads by example and actions.

Yes, injuries are an issue but come Feb, if Clark's fit and strong, he is my captain.

No Way Clarke gets the C.
Let's get some sort of consistency other than being consistently injured.

Nathan for the Win!

50/50, that fits in with the co-captains Roos has touted

I just feel like lately garland has taken alot more media responsibility on, talking about the club alot more an so on
And on field he tried an hurt just as much as jonesy

My gut feel is that we will have three skippers due to the fact that Roos has suggested many times he likes this idea. Chunk and Garlo are our spiritual leaders and are looked up to as such by the playing group. (I'd put Mitch in here but I think he needs to focus on getting on the field.) Grimsey has done nothing wrong in the role, learnt so much through the adversity he's been through and deserves to remain a leader. Chip is the smokey.

This is not what I would do with our captaincy. This is just my take on our current situation.
