As others have mentioned it has sold out, although I was suprised at how cheap ticketmaster7 were selling the tickets for; seats that normally sold for 40 dollars were being sold off for 17 dollars.
you're wrong.

At the MCG they wouldn't of got a sell out and would of been lucky to get to 70,000 tickets sold, therefore opening up to the likes of Coleman and Hadley to cry about poor Sydneysiders not getting a chance to watch Origin when they didn't sell out Game 1, 6 week before.

You don't know that.

53,000 tickets sold 3 weeks before the game. Are you saying that they would be lucky to sell another 17,000 in three weeks? I reckon they could easily sell 30,000 more with the promotion leading up to the game.

Still having game at Telstra Dome is the right move because it creates a sell out without too much effort and now officials can spend the next three weeks promoting the code and not getting people to buy tickets which is better than anything they could of wished for and a plus over playing it at the G.

Why not promote the code at the same time as selling tickets? Now it's just three weeks of wasted potential profit.

If I was the ARL, I would be happier with a larger, non sellout crowd at the MCG than a sellout crowd at TD.

Also interesting to note in today's courier mail:

Question:Are you happy Melbourne is hosting the State of Origin decider?

Yes: 72%
No: 28%

I was under the impression that Melbourne got the decider because it was fair to both states. With such an important event, to give a state 2 home matches is unfair. At least with it played in neutral territory even things up.

But then again most people will be going for Queensland because we hate NSW. :p

The game is only played in Melbourne to promote the game.

Each year, the state with two matches rotates so its completely fair (in 2004 NSW got two matches, in 2005 QLD got two matches). QLD will be giving up a game in 2009 so it evens things up again.

So does this mean we will get the State of Origin again in 2009? If so goodie. I'm looking forward to Origin 3. It should be a good game. Even if I am going because it’s a "Novelty"

The thing is though Does teh author know who is on top of teh NRL ladder ? :D

I'm sure he does... which is another problem for the Storm.

Only 9,000 average to the best team in the competition is no doubt dissappointing.

only because it rains more games than not. bad weather would keep out an extra 30% quite easily.

Just wait for the new stadium to get built :thumbsu:

Who does Melbourne play next week? If they are smart then it will be in Melbourne during the afternoon so it doesn't clash with the AFL.

Of course ... seeing as Game 3 was due to be played in Sydney! :p

You will find that there will be a pro-Qld crowd at TD on the 5th.

I grew up in Qld hating NSW, moved to Vic still hating everything NSW. You will find the majority of Vics feeling the same way.

I can't wait!!!

QUEENSLANDER!!!!

Some of, no most of that article was complete rubbish.

What can't be argued is why melbourne should get a game at all?

I'm a Melbourne lad, grew up in the Northern Territory though so I have a love for both AFL and Rugby League.

Now I know they say it is to promote the game, which is fair enough. But it is still a match between NSW and QLD, in that respect it has no geniune merit for being here. Sure there is that whole nuetral ground line but it is a match between two states and neither of them are VIC.

I'm glad for the NSW and QLD people down here who might get to see an origin game when they might not have otherwise, but overall I don't see why it deserves to be played here.

And if anyone thinks it will convert people to league and suddenly support the Storm I sadly doubt it.

It deserves to be plyed there because there is a demand for it there...

note the sell-out.

You don't know that.

53,000 tickets sold 3 weeks before the game.

Hate to brake it to you but, they didn't sell 53,000 tickets in 3 weeks, more like 53,000 tickets in 7 months remembering tickets went on sale in November last year not 3 weeks ago.

Are you saying that they would be lucky to sell another 17,000 in three weeks?

Yes, but thats because I doubt they would of sold as many tickets by this stage had the game been set down for the "G" instead of the Dome. The larger capacity might of left people from buying tickets to later on and closer to the match instead of 3 weeks out when it looks like being a sell out at the Dome.

I reckon they could easily sell 30,000 more with the promotion leading up to the game.

I reckon the couldn't in that timeframe.

Why not promote the code at the same time as selling tickets? Now it's just three weeks of wasted potential profit.

You can't tell me the ARL would rather spend the next two weeks doing both selling tickets and promoting the code in Melbourne when now they have 3 weeks of nothing but free time to promote the code. Promoting the code is what the ARL is down here for and should be using its events it will stage to do just that, not use them to sell tickets.

If I was the ARL, I would be happier with a larger, non sellout crowd at the MCG than a sellout crowd at TD.

I rather rather the sell out.

Of they are, they haven't won at Telstra Stadium have they;)

What the hell are you talking about?

I never said anything about selling 53,000 in three weeks, I said that they sold 53,000 with three weeks to go.

Yes, but thats because I doubt they would of sold as many tickets by this stage had the game been set down for the "G" instead of the Dome. That's hardly relevant.. you're still saying that the tickets will be sold anyway, just closer to the game, rather than three weeks off. Anyway, thats only an assumption, it may or may not be true.

I reckon the couldn't in that timeframe.

Are you telling me they would be lucky to sell 17,000 tickets with all the hype in the last three weeks? For most sporting matches, more tickets are sold closer to the game than any other time!

What difference will it make? They can use their existing events for a launch pad for the code and the game, its not going to take any extra effort.

The promotion isn't even actually for the code as such, all the promotion is to the actual State of Origin game itself.

http://www.nrl.com/News/Latest/NewsArticle/tabid/76/NewsId/1644/Default.aspx

The two teams will arrive in Melbourne a week ahead of the match and will be involved in a week long promotion of the State of Origin.

Of course it will be a sell-out its the best rugby league played in the world. We in Melbourne more often than not turn out in large numbers for sporting events. But it is NSW vs QLD, nothing to do with Victoria.

Using the crowd as an example is irrelevant. Now if it was a Rugby League test fair enough, because that is Australia. But it just seems the fact that its between two states that a third non-competing state deserves to hold the game.

I'm a Melbourne boy who has had the luxury of growing up with a NSW father and Victorian mother so i've had Rugby League and Aussie Rules around forever so I want Rugby League here in Melbourne. But I'm yet to see why State of Origin in Victoria.

If SA played VIC in Aussie Rules every year do you think you'd see it played in QLD or NSW?

It's a little different though, SA v VIC isn't the pinnacle of AFL while State of Origin is.

When they first announced Origin was going to be played in Melbourne, I was very sceptical and definitely didn't expect a sellout crowd... but now that the melbourne public have caught on, I think it's a good idea.

Also, AFL doesn't have Australian jerseys up for grabs. They have always said NSW players play to get selected for Australia whilst QLD play to beat NSW, that's the difference in attitude.
No matter what the media says playing for Australia is still one of the greatest honours in the game and a dream of every footballer.

yes but its still a contest between NSW and QLD. Thats my main point, I just think those two states then deserve to have the first, second and third game in those states.

If the game was at the MCG there would be a huge crowd, personally I aint going because I cant stand the Dome, if it was at the G I would go and wouldnt be suprised if more thought the same, especially once level 1 went, who wants to buy reserved seats on level 3?
I did.

Level 3 at the dome is better than almost anywhere at the 'G' because you are still so close. The dome is without a shadow of a doubt the best gound to watch sport in Melbourne if not the country.
