Jeez I didn't really care too much if we got one but hearing how much you guys are bitching and moaning I want one just to piss you off

Seriously we have one 30 games in 7 years and the expansions teams are packed with way more kids than us , we will happily take a pick

And if bulldogs an saints fans want to complain! Then sit on the bottom for 7 years and then talk to me
Port fans? You won a premiership in 04 and played in another grand final in 07

Exactly. And they didn't need a priority pick to rebuild and be better than your club is today (with all it's priority picks, #1 picks and tanking for picks). What difference do you really think one more priority pick is going to make? The AFL needs to say no, you wouldn't give a junkie one more hit to "help" them.

Ok we can all acknowledge that Melbourne ****ed up its picks that doesn't mean we don't get any more , it's irrelevant what picks we have already have , yes we have had picks , yes it's out own fault that we are horrible , but the fact is we were in the bottom for again and we had a percentage of 52 , we got beaten by the expansion teams 3 times and lost ten games by ten goals ... That's a pp right there regardless of our past

Other clubs should be happy , if we get pick 1 then we will on trade it meaning Carlton Brisbane wb stkilda etc all have access to Tom Boyd , and we will get some ready made midfielders

I don't think you understand how priority picks work...

The Priority Pick debate needs to be considered in the broader discussion about the evenness of the competition. Based on betting data of the 198 games of the 2013 season, more than a quarter of all games saw the favourite go into the game with a perceived 90%+ probability of winning. More than 10% of games the underdog was given less than 1 in 50 chance. These are incredibly short odds in a two-horse race involving a team sport.

How does it compare with 2010? The data is obviously skewed by the introduction of GWS and GCS, but even still the increase in number of lopsided games is incredible. If it continues the AFL will struggle to maintain its audience and TV ratings/revenue.

News flash, this is a (well it's supposed to be) RUTHLESS competition.

I do not want your club to succeed.
Melbourne supporters seems to think this league is U9 netball and all teams deserve a trophy for simply existing. You should get success if and only if you earn it.

Socialism.
Sport.

Pick one. These philosophical models are incompatible in their complete forms. The draft is enough equalization IMO.

The AFL isn't socialism or sport. It's in the entertainment business. It's in the AFL's interests to have as even a competition as possible to bring higher revenues (that it then distributes to the clubs...)

It's hard to agree with your argument, at least, based on the maneuvering of the AFL.See: the GWS & GC expansion.

If the AFL was really interested in fairness it would solve the fixture inequality. It only cares about money and this comes from expanding its market (which doesn't come from helping Melbourne increase their attendances FWIW; or indeed helping any of the weaker clubs).

We wouldn't sit on the bottom of the ladder for seven years though because we have competent administrations who are willing to do the hard work, not just sit on our asses and expect the afl to fix it all for us. I think you should be left to suffer on the bottom of the ladder as its all your own fault. If and when you do the hard work to drag yourselves off the canvass then ill congratulate you. All you Melbourne fans act like its your god given right to be successful and it's seems though your club acts the same way. Well there's most of your problem!!!! That's why I think the afl should give you nothing. No money for Paul Roos, no priority pick. And if it means you eventually have to fold then bad luck but you only have yourselves to blame.

Don't count your chickens Tragic, the Saints could be in for a world of pain.

We can already start to see the light. Our kids are coming on much faster than melbournes as we kept the leaders around to show the way. We'll have a couple if high draft picks in the next 2-3 years and we won't stuff them up like Melbourne has. No chance we'll sink to the depths Melbourne has.

Some of your kids are ok, but Riewoldt, Milne, Hayes, Dal Santo, Montangna etc were still the mainstays of your team and top picks are hit or miss. And your recent drafting is the reason why you are down the bottom, so you can't be too confident in nailing the draft.

Clubs like St Kilda and the Bulldogs are likely to benefit from a stronger welfare system being in place, so arguing against Priority Picks is like cutting your nose off despite your face.

No doubt it's one of Roos' clauses for signing - to get the AFL to approve this.

As soon as Roos went for the job I knew they must be getting a priority!!

Absolute farce and the comp which is not a competition is a total disgrace the way it is run without a level playing field!!

Roos from his time at Swans and now MFC, not interested in coaching, oh now I will:rolleyes:, is really AFL HQ support Roos who cannot achieve without draft support and a helping hand from AFL HQ. Achieved nothing and at least Longmire can say he won a proper premiership as a coach even though he still had the cap bonus!!

like executives in monopoly industries all they care about is exploiting others for their benefit, which in this case , means largely, the means for higher salaries:rolleyes:

My point is, if Roos is attracting so much money and so much talent to your club, why do you still need the leg up?

How about we see what Roos can do with what you have before you take more money out of the charity bin?

Show me the priority pick rules that states that Paul Roos must be taken into account when deciding if a club receives one or not.

So a club that will soon be brimming with cash, talent assist coaches, and redeveloped young players needs an extra pick?

you cant argue on one hand Roos will successfully rebuild your clubs development, but on the other say you need a pick because you have so little talent on your list and are in desperate need

give Roos 12 months, and lets review

like the central banks monopolising credit, power utilities, non-democratic govts, 4 pillers banks etc..and oil cartels that fuel the abuse of power on other people for exploitation, as in the past, despite the reprieve from the nuclear, all it will achieve is a shake out threw war when the desperate do not care if they die when they become slaves!!

at the end of the day the AFL clubs are guinea pigs to AFL HQ executives!!

Don't think the PP really works like that not-withstanding it is discretionary.

All this debate is swirling because the current PP is too generous. The first round of every draft should be untainted.

You traded away pick one (priority) to Hawthorn for Trent Croad. I can also recall Essendon playing you for a pick to get Lloyd by giving you some crap player of theirs, although I don't think Freo ever had the option of drafting him as it was compensation or something. I just remember thinking at the time Essendon played that very smartly. I think it was after the Croad trade the AFL made a rule about trading priority picks. I could be wrong, which is why I'm asking the question.
The Lloyd thing is just a story shopped around from time to time, to make the list of "Freo blunders" appear more comical. Freo was never going to land him.

I'm also fairly certain that pick one traded for Croad was a plain old pick one received for finishing stone motherf***** last on the ladder. I can't find any reference to it being a priority pick.

It fits, actually. I think from memory the old priority pick system was used when a club finished with less than five H&A wins in a season. Freo have only managed that once, in 2001 (hence the priority pick). We've had a lot of bad seasons, but few that bad. It's a bit annoying that, for all the teams who have managed this on a fairly regular basis, we're still remembered as being the first club ever actually accused of tanking for draft picks (Damien Drum).
And now, after years of clubs "resting players" before finals, we're the ones involved with a semi-scandal about "integrity" regarding the resting of players.
That's the life of a Freo fan.

I've had a poke around, can still only find one priority pick ever received by Freo. That's it. Seems we've become more successful via an improved recruitment policy and a complete shake up of administration (interesting that a part of that shakeup was getting rid of Connolly and Schwab, who ended up... at Melbourne), not via priority picks. And this is what Bluelegs was saying, essentially.
Not only that, but it's taken years, as well.Melbourne should have to go through what we've been through. It's certainly a learning experience.

So Melbourne have been bad for 7 years, we haven't played finals in 12 and managed to work our through it. We didn't beg for a PP and ask the afl to fund a roos, malthouse or Matthews type coach on top of it.

No to another PP especially in lieu of their unashamed tanking in the past. And as for the clubs piss poor excuse of "but we're damaging the brand" what garbage, as far as I can remember there has always been a pimple on the arse of the competition, richmond, bulldogs, Carlton, Brisbane, Sydney, fitzroy, Fremantle have all had sustained periods of poor performance. It's part of the cycle of the comp. The afl is not going to get less tv rights next deal bc Melbourne have been crap, what tripe!
