The very night I moved into my first flat in Melbourne, April '93, when we unveiled A. McAdam and whipped their yellow and black butts in the process.

I couldn't help wondering if I'd arrived in the big smoke just in time to reap the rewards of a lifetime supporting the kangaroos.

The second game of that year was even better with Carey kicking 5? in the second half to lead the rampaging Roos to a great come from behind victory (35 points down?? at half time).

And not forgetting the third game between the Roos and Tigers in '95 where the Roos beat Richmond by about 5 goals in the finals with Carey and Longmire getting plenty of goals (5 or 6 each IIRC) between them.

95 was a good year - seeing all those bandwagon supporters come out of the woodwork and having to learn all but 3 words of the themesong. And then seeing the ****y pr1cks get hammered in the first week of the finals...

Rd 22 96 was pretty good as well. We needed to win to finish 2nd. Boomer played his first game. Crock took a specky. And Richmond choked again...

Does anyone else remember Brett Allisons "dive" in the last quarter to get a free 35m out from goal.

That's my favourite moment.. for memory John Blakey kicked the first goal, the boys were pumped and you knew we were in for a good night. It was also the night, the Richmond Cheer Squad made one of the best banners you could ever see, there were two,they had a great big tiger with the words "We're Back" and had smoke coming from the tops of the banner.

I remember one pleasing thing about that game's first quarter... while Richmond were running rings around our blokes, David King was flying the flag for the Roos on a wing... with shirtfronts he bowled over Brendon Gale, Michael Gale and big fat Steve Jurica within the space of about 10 minutes. Hopefully he can fire up in a similar way this week, but without doing anything silly!

Favourite moment has to be the first quarter of the 1990 massacre.

After getting touched up by Melbourne in Round 1, I was very iffy about our prospects that night, especially given that Richmond kicked 26.15 against us the previous year. I remember we had some pretty ordinary players around that era, and to be thruthful it didn't instill a lot of confidence in a 14 year old North supporter who had just started going to games regularly the previous year (lost every match I went to in '89).

I remember sitting at home and flicking on the radio at quarter time, and I heard the score was 81-9, and thought "jeezus we're getting flogged worse than when we play Hawthorn".. then the goalkickers were read out Longmire, German, Carey, McCarthy etc...

Quick dash to the VCR to tape the replay half an hour later, and I still have that tape. I think that night set the scene for our successful decade because it showed what our 20-21 year olds were capable of. Guys like Longmire and Carey had struggled with injuries to that point, and Rock had struggled full stop.

In the years following that win, most of the Richmond supporters (who eventually got used to the floggings we dished out) always whinged about the umpiring even in 10-15 goal losses. Funny thing about that 1990 games, was that the free kicks favoured Richmond, 35 to 18.

Another favourite memory is the 1988 game, when North came from several goals down at half time, to belt Richmond by a then club record of 77 points. In those days we weren't too familiar with belting anyone, so that was a particularly pleasing feeling even though I only got to listen to it on the radio. I was in the garage at home, fixing my BMX at the time. They beat us when the sides met again later that year though.

IIRC we were 38 down halfway through the 3rd quarter.

One of Carey's greatest and most underrated performances to get us out of that one.

My favourite match too. I listened to the game at home, and we just kept piling on the goals. The most memorable game I went to would be the game in 1995 when Richmond kicked 9 goals in the first quarter. The Richmond crowd was huge, and I never realised how many supporters they had until then.

I can only remember two games we've played in when it was over after 10 minutes. There was a game against Hawthorn last year (or the 2001) where they kicked 6 or 7 goals before we even had two possesions in a row.

Those Carey inspired comebacks in 1995 were great wins too.

Ross Smith wasnt paid a mark despite being the man infront, and when he clearly (through the use of the replay) had first hands to it. Tigers kick the second or third or something and the rest is history as we never recovered.

I was at the game and my cousin had come out of the woodwork ... was ruffling my hair and telling me how overrated we were ... chainsmoked for the rest of the game and didn't utter a word.

I didn't say much, but Carey was doing the talking for me.

One other great memory was when Richmond had the "Roar Meter" and they got an early jump on us ... we then hit back and I kept on asking for them to show the "Roo Meter" everytime we scored one.

Didn't go down very well towards the end of the match.

Personally i think Colbert is the best to match up on him.

I think Archer has had the wood on Richo, but certainly hasn't flogged him EVERY time. Martyn was usually first choice opponent while he was at the club, with Archer filling in on Martyn's absence. While it can be argued that Archer did better than Martyn, it was probably for overall team match up reasons that Martyn remained first choice.

Archer's good performances against Richardson are probably so memorable because Archer gives away a far bit in height, weight, reach and pace, but has still acquitted himself quite well against an opponent who (physically at least) should be able to dominate. IIRC at least two of Richo's poor performances were against Archer.

At least one occasion that shouldn't be considered in the Arch vs Richo debate, is the last-mentioned game from late 2001. Through the absence of other important defenders, Jason McCartney was forced to line up on Richardson, and conceded 17 marks. The game was close at times, with Richo's errant kicking keeping North in it. Fair dinkum he should have kicked 12 that night. Ironically, after kicking about 1.6 and spraying a few out on the full, from memory he drilled the sealer.
