In a way I can understand what sandeano's friend's dad was on about. Steve was 6'4" and had the perfect footballer's build with good co-ordination and a bit of pace for a big bloke and also a terrific mark. He was recruited from Geraldton WA as a 17 year old in what was thought to be a real coup as he gave every indication of being a super star. He starred in the Under 19's and kicked something like 86 goals with them in 15 or so games and was quickly promoted so that he was on the bench in the '77 flag side. The world seemed his oyster and I remember him playing some "Carey like" games at CHF in around '78,marking everything and kicking 6 but in the end he seemed to be a case of a good sized kid with a bit of talent looking really good because of the class around him. When we really needed him to stand up in the early '80's when our '70's stars were ageing or retired he just wasn't up to it. he infuriated a lot of North fans because he didn't seem willling to put his big body on the line. He did play 226 games and kicked 201 goals but it was a solid rather than the brilliant career we all had hopes for.

This is spot on. For a bloke his size and physique he did nowhere near enough. He did play some good games but was too inconsistent. The number of games and goals can be attributed to the fact that he played for 12 seasons before injury forced him to retire.

favourite richmond memory has to be the 95 final. i remember how ****y the richmond supporters were until midway through the second when wayne blew them apart. they came back at us before we blew them apart in the last. the roo supporters were going nuts....good times.

This is one of mine too. I was sitting in the forward pocket area at the Punt Rd end with my 2 boys who were only 15 & 11 at the time. Just before the game started three screaming Richmond supporters took their seats right behind us. They spent most of the night abusing Carey when they weren't screaming "Come on tigers" in our ears. Things threatened to turn a bit nasty when North ran away in the last quarter, but we all ended up shaking hands all around. We got good value for money that night. North played Footscray in the reserves final and beat them.

All the games mentioned would come under my memorable moments but another one I recall was at Arden Street in late 70's or early '80s when the tigers were in front and one of the pie stand caught fire. The game was stopped til the flames were put out, then the Roos got their act together and won.

i was lucky to be at the m.c.g to see the first game of the krakouer brothers. if i remember rightly we lost the game but were mesmerized by the uncanny skills of jim and phil.

I believe it was Jimmy who kicked the first goal of that game within 30 odd seconds !! :D

On Stephan McCann, I agree with much of what has already been said, positive & negative. I'll add that the most favourite & memorable Stephen McCann moment was in the 'Battle of Britain' game >>> man, that game was ANGRY PILLS all over, even McCann got some some. I recall him grabbing a very young Stephen Kernahan by the scruff of the jumper and forcing his head in the BIG industrial bin on the outta fence. :D I thought, WOW !! now, if he playing like that during his career, he would of been a far better player. Pin point lace up pass, him playing in front on the burst was the only way he was gonna get a touch. Kicked a few bags in his time also and more importantly has a Premiership medal.

Who recalls Blighty against the Tiges???

Three standouts:

Venue: MCG '79 Punt Road End Blighty sells Francis Bourke the dumby and snaps for goal as Francis Bourke crashes into the goal post...ala Tony Shaw running into that infamous tree. :D

Venue: Arden Street '82 Blighty was taking speccy's all over the place... booted 7 and really gave the Tiges defence alot of headaches (no, nobody run into goal posts that day).

Venue: MCG '90 Round 2 Longmire & co ROUT the toothless Tiges to the tune of 141pts. Whooo-hooo!! No wonder the gumpy ol' fart KB detests North... didn't he get the arse after that game?? :D

annual bump

BTW - I only added the Jason MacCartney option today (that used to be 'other'). And FWIW - this thread started before THAT game.

And Francis Bourke at Arden Street with blood pissing our of a cut eye is one of the most famous images of the game.

Anyone got a pic of the original? And does anyone know who smacked/cut him?

Bourkey WON the game off his own boot that day IIRC. I was there. Was it 1979 or 1980?? North had them down for the count but somehow, the #30 took it personal and did what any BRAVEHEART kinda guy would do.. yup, a fond 'opposition memory' probably a TOp 3 memory if I was to recall those moments of inspiration you could ever care to recall.

I had that inicident on the back of my mind when I posted an hour ago but decided to GO FOR GLORY moments. btw Lidge, shouldn't the wardrobe for the scousers in this ad (pictured) be wearing a North jumper with those nifty collars???

95 was a good year - seeing all those bandwagon supporters come out of the woodwork and having to learn all but 3 words of the themesong. And then seeing the ****y pr1cks get hammered in the first week of the finals...

Rd 22 96 was pretty good as well. We needed to win to finish 2nd. Boomer played his first game. Crock took a specky. And Richmond choked again...
The following week we came out and pulled the Bummers pants down in front of 85k at the G. And yes, we have our share of bandwagon supporters just like every other club...or should I say nearly every other club. but at least we have supporters, and after 27 years of pain, you can hate us, but there must some form of begrudging respect for a group that sticks at it despite losing any semblance of sanity.
Was at most of the games in that poll. The 141 point drubbing stays long in my memory if only for the fact the Michael Mitchell kicked the first goal of the match. after that it was a landslide.
Will remember the 95 game when we kicked the first 7 as well because we didn't get in until time on in the 1st and missed it.
The McCartney match was special. will remember the Tiges cheer suqad rising as one to clap him when he came down to their end.
