Mental Health Check In - Everyone Okay?

Used to be as heavily invested as anyone here..
I’m a 33 year member and footy was my outlet.. survived the judge years, the drug years and the end of woosha days but nothing comes close to what has happened the past 18 months.

I checked out of last season about round 6 when it was obvious we were no good and just watched to see if there were any shoots coming through and to marvel at how bad our list was…

This year I checked out at half time in the port pre season game and yes even though we won it all looked exactly the same as the year before… sadly it’s much worse.

I wasn’t content to let the club soak up my $25 voucher and free postage so last week begrudgingly got some merch and used every discount voucher I could muster together…

Can’t wait to see this shell of a club at the Gabba in two weeks and hopefully bump into Trevor or the Pres to pass on some feedback.

Personally I think 10 years ago a loss like this would've ruined a weekend. I used to stew over it. I was really invested in it and the club intrinsically.

Perspective is a great thing. My significant other got very sick at a very young age. Dealing with that puts it all in perspective.
Yes, I still care and this is still a crappy time to be a supporter of this once great club, but it's okay to let it not cut as deep as it once did.

That doesn't mean I wasn't celebrating like a clown after the 2018 GF win, I sure was, but had we lost I could've got over it. A few years before it? Would've been sore for years.

I react WAY worse to losses when we are good.

When we're a rabble I expect to be belted.

Yeah, even by 200 points.

It's all about expectations.

The quicker people move on to acceptance the better.

There's some real enjoyment I get out of these type of scenarios, because as much as it sucks, it's always so exciting so see the green shoots sprouting upwards out of the cracks of the jail cell floor.

Hewett looks an absolute goer to me and I love how he's taking the game on already. Once he starts busting those tackles he'll take the comp by storm. I'd go so far to say that had he been drafted by a strong side and stayed uninjured, he'd have finished very high up in the RS.

Have so much respect for Ginbey's work this year. Obviously won't win the RS but should get an award for most character shown by a first year.

Long just looks a natural - I couldn't believe when he fumbled a ground ball last night, possibly the first time I've seen it! I hope Simmo gives him a bit more time around the ball if we're getting belted so he doesn't just vanish on a forward flank.

Bailey Williams has been immense this year and should be Top 3 in the Best and Fairest. He should be really proud of his year. Even last night I thought he fought back well after an absolute bath from Hickey (so underrated) early.

Burgiel looks a ripper to me and it's a shame he hasn't been able to stay fit and make his debut. I'm more bullish on Chesser than most and think he's got real character after a tough start. Culley looks an inside beast and I can't wait to have him back.

Bazzo fits into the Chesser category of having a real tough year and he'll come out better next year.

Allen is a bit older obviously, but his work this year coming back from that injury - immense.

So while it sucks we are where we are, and some will consider the above reaching, I'm getting plenty of enjoyment from the above.

I haven't even mentioned Petch here so this post can be taken seriously - development!

👏 Brilliant post sir, I wholeheartedly agree with you. The green shoots are there, we have made the (admittedly small and possibly hard to see!) first steps forward. Am excited by the potential of some of the young players who we have drafted in the last couple of years. There is a base to work from.

This will be year number three out of the finals, and unfortunately the streak won’t stay at three (like it has done in the past), but some more strong drafting in the next couple of years, a real focus on development (I don’t believe for a second that the club isn’t aware of the issues that present at WAFL but rectifying it will be a challenge) and we can push up the ladder.
The first step as always with us is making our home ground a fortress again. Win most of our home games say (8/9 of 11) and you are well on the way to getting back into the top 8.

Not for one minute discounting the issues that we face in the here and now, but I am genuinely hopeful we are currently in the “worst of it”. Need to hang in there.

Hi all.

I thought it would be a decent time to remind you all to check in with yourselves mentally.
Check in with someone. Go for a walk. Find time for yourselves away from the media, the TV and BF.

The club is in a proper rut and many people use football as an escape.
Statistically, DV cases go through the roof during sporting events. Days like today are triggers for many people.
Saying it's just a game is a cop out. To many people, sport is people's reason to get up.

So. If you're struggling, make sure you take that step. Make that call. To a friend. To a professional. To someone. It's not weak. You're not weak. You just can't bottle it up.

Cheers

Reality is that we are building a new young list - they will not win for a while but the small signs of development are enjoyable. I left the media and garbage TV footy shows some years ago, I see snippets one here and wonder why people get so upset about the ranting of morons who only write/speak to generate advertising.
I watch all eagles games and a few others each week.
The TDF starts this weekend so there is another 3 weeks of additional sports viewing to entertain me.

Older mid30s fan who has been through a couple highs and lows, so I’m pretty okay, all in perspective. Years like this you just get more neutrally invested, attend to other matters in life, take solace in teams from other codes, and with the Eagles looking for the positives each week, following various players bound to be delisted before you know it and storing up some easybeat pain within moderation which is humbling to longterm fans. We’ve been awful and well off the pace for about two years now so it isn’t like these shellackings are a reality check punch in the gut. We also have a tendency as a club to be very awful when we are awful, we don’t dilly dally about the cellar door of the bottom 4 but dive in headfirst.

Sympathy for young fans navigating their first winter of discontent after a decade of mostly decent football. We all remember how invested we were at such an age, and how it feels when you slide down the ladder viciously and prospects at a win are few and far between. I’m lucky I don’t live in the Perth media fishbowl, but I’ve seen it play out with the comparable Broncos in Brisbane, you gotta shut that local sideshow noise out rather than let it constantly remind you.
