Mid-Season Draft

Definitely fills a list need
He is very raw. Ben Clark would be be one we keep an eye on for the rookie draft or next pre-season SSP. I guess we would consider if all our other options get taken, which highly unlikely. My guess is at worst we end up with pick 5-6 and that is after a number of clubs decide they even want a pick and move one of their injured players to long term injury.

Personally don’t believe we’re that interested in Buller. That is just a couple of Perth journo’s making assumptions based on him being in Perth. West Coast might pull the trigger on Buller. He is a heck of lot better than other options they have been playing forward like Jamieson. Now Darling is injured and Culley also was playing forward before being injured.

We have had plenty of chances to pick Narkle. Has been on the trade table when signing 1 year contracts for Geelong and could have done a training stint for us after being delisted.

Narkle did train with Richmond and they were quite keen. They choose Bradkte as their SSP but soon after Castagna retired.

Reportedly we are very keen on Maric but seems a long shot for whatever pick we end up with.

I think freo would take Buller but no way he gets to the pick

My rather selfish problem I have with these State games is that they’re basically two leagues trying to show who’s better except no one else cares who’s better. The state game and who won will be forgotten by Monday.

The problem with this in terms of accessing draft potential of players is only a handful on the field are draftable at best. There’s a lot of ex-AFL guys and State league veterans that will never get drafted.

I’d rather see your Robert Hansen Jnrs of the world running around than Stefan Giro and Tobe Watson.

I was at work today so didn’t see the game but was anyone actually worth watching? (From the SANFL side too).

Not everything needs to exist for the benefit of the AFL though.

There's an important nationwide culture of Aussie rules that exists below that and if you start undermining everything below the top level it will sooner or later undermine the top level too.

Agreed. The state players have an opportunity to represent the state which is the highest level many of them will be able strive for.

Anyway there were a few players out there that could be potential mid season or rookie selections at the end of the year.

James Rowe Small forward/half forward who BOG, played 32 AFL games between 2021-2022 before being delisted. He was unlucky due to their abundance of smaller forwards. I remember him playing well against us in that game wheee Rachele got 5 goals.

I only watched the first half but no one looked AFL standard to me, or even potential AFL level. Rowe certainly the closest though.

As a side note and off topic, the WAFC need to pull their fingers out and restore some state pride! There's no reason why we should be getting dominated by the SANFL over a long period of time.

Agree with the first line but who does the State game actually benefit?

The WAFL and SANFL would probably get greater benefit with an extra week of fixtures tbh.

The players

They get to take on the best of another league

They get a trip to Adelaide every second year

They get to train with the best of their state league

It's exciting for the players

To me it's kinda interesting to compare the WAFL vs other leagues. There's always been that banter around that the VFL (or whoever) is better than other leagues. This shows a clear comparison - if only for one solitary game. You get to see the different playing styles too. (i.e. Do WAFL players prefer to play a running game?) There's more to see than just who could play AFL.

I'm not sure the VFL is the best league, more teams though so maybe as the talent is spread out, just been weird to see the NEAFL sides come in and absolutely dominate that league, everyone thought the NEAFL was garbage

Seems like SANFL is the best tbh

Did think about this, will suck if we win a few here and then tank out the rest of the year, means we get a worse MSD pick and no benefit of the year end draft lol
Seems like that Maric dude is the only really highly rated player anyway and we're not **** enough to get in the conversation for him with the bottom 3 as they are.

Wonder if that Hansen dude will make it to us?

Most mock drafts written outside WA don’t have Hansen in them at all.

I think that’s a bit ridiculous tbh - hopefully he’s going under the radar a bit.
