Mid-Season Draft

Interesting that Maric has nommed under an 18 month contract
It makes sense, he's the best 19 year old in the draft and could very easily go in the national draft if there was no MSD. He'd get a 2 year contract there and get's close to a 2 year contract here

Or he noms a 6 month term and signs an extension at better $$$ or can move from wce in 6 months time if need be

I honestly reckon the perks of a 6 month contract are pretty good for the #1 pick atleast

We’ve always given 18 month terms.
We didn’t give either of our two selections an 18month I didn’t think. They were signed on initial 6months and then re-signed for a further 12months. So yes ended up 18months.

I’m not insinuating anything except pointing out his terms. Buller for comparison purposes is nominating Std 6months.

Robert Hansen Jnr would be my top pick for us. I think he’d cap off the small forwards room nicely and offers a different look to what we have. He’s also one of the few who could really alter their draft position since he’ll be playing U18 Champs otherwise. Maybe he won’t be available as a rookie at the end of the year.

I’m not too bothered by Jack Buller likely going before our pick. I’d probably take Jaiden Hunter ahead of him, I think he may be the more well rounded AFL prospect. I liked both in their draft years, but I think Buller is perhaps more in the mould of a Billy Frampton or Elliot Himmelberg - a fringe guy who offers versatility and some back up ruck minutes.

Ryan Maric is looking the #1 available, just a matter of if West Coast go local instead. Otherwise I would have a look at Noah Casalini out of North Adelaide, but Tom Emmett has probably filled that role already.

I think while Treacy is playing like he is it is hard to justify Buller. At least while Kuek is on the list.

Interesting that Hansen has nominated and stated preferred terms - have we been in his ear about this to scare others off him like Hawks did with Jai?

Speedster Hansen jnr has received interest from a number of clubs in the lead-up to the mid-season intake and has nominated on a longer-term (18-month) contract through to the end of 2024, while Buller has lodged a short-term (six months) nomination as the 22-year-old key forward aims to land a rookie spot.

He is a longer term prospect so 18 makes sense anyway

He can only nominate length, can't change the terms like jai did, that loophole was closed

Buller is young too though but he only went for 6 months. Hansen going for 18 indicates he seems more confident/has been given assurances perhaps.

Point taken on the Jai comparison. Maybe we can get him to tell everyone he wants to stay in WA

I see eighteen months from Jr as a sign that he expects to move interstate and wants security that it will be worth it.

I don’t see why any young player wouldn’t nominate 18 months tbh.

Realistically we’re calling it six months but it’s more like 10-12 games of State league footy. It’s one even medium term injury away from being absolutely **** all.

It simply isn’t enough time to prove yourself. If I was a delisted AFL player or actual mature ager just trying to get into the system again maybe I would consider six months. Someone like Hansen is still 19 and has plenty of time to get himself into the system. If he misses out now there was still plenty of mature agers drafted in the National/Rookie Drafts at the end of each year the current version of the Mid Season Draft has happened.

I agree. 18 months is one preseason. It's one off season for you to measure up against the rest of the squad and try and make your case for a round one game. If you're coming off a substandard fitness base but the club sees you as a round one prospect for 2024 - that's an eighteen month deal needed. You can immediately stop playing football if required, hit the gym or the track as required to be ready for that preseason and season 2024.

The mature guys being picked to fill list holes need to be ready to go though.

It must be hard coming in mid-season to an AFL team given the AFL players will have had a full pre-season training to get used to the game plan and to get their fitness up. I remember there were a few players picked up who I was certain would have an immediate impact, but they never played and got dropped at the end of the year (i.e. had less than 2-3 months to prove themselves and got dumped).

What’s your thoughts on Ben clarke? I think it’s between him or Hansen.

Also interested to see your thoughts on luker kentfield?

Even just switching WAFL teams is hard. Kuek was going nicely at East Perth (hence why we picked him), but then he shifted to Peel and couldn't get into it and was in the reserves by the end of the year. Now he is kicking goals again.

Six months (which is really 3 months) is a useless timeframe for most. Only time I can see it being worthwhile is if a finals quality team lost all their rucks and wanted a Naismith type, or some similar type of emergency.

Feel like he won't slide enough for us.
Similar to Derksen last year.

🤞🤞

On the balance of things I think he’ll probably get through tbh.

There doesn’t seem to be much talk outside WA, although him getting tested probably shows otherwise.

We’ve also got a much better pick this year. Some clubs below us won’t pick at all. We’ll probably have pick 6-10 depending on today’s result and the final draft order.

Hope we don’t go with the other two main WA prospects tbh. Buller’s athleticism is terrible to point where I don’t think he’ll make it. Hunter doesn’t get enough of the footy. I’d rather pick one of the younger players down at Peel tbh - don’t really fill a need but there’s one or two there that could play a role at AFL level.

After today's game with Walters out I really hope we go for Hansen now. When Schultz is having a poor game and Walters is out we don't have a true small forward who can create goals (Switta is great, but not a prolific goal scorer)
Swiita has been playing more midfield/high half forward.
Hansen is a need.

I'd like to see young Blight for Peel Thunder get an opportunity somewhere in the draft. He's a big unit that moves well and has continued to improve over the last 12 months and consistently plays a good game.
