Why do you say this? It was fairly obvious on the telly. I saw it straight away, in real time, without the benefit of the replay. Do you think umpires don't have a good angle at times?

Anyway, you can deal with it in other ways too. MRP can make the decision to fine him points, after a review, such that if he does it again during the year he misses a game. Watch Shuey pull his head in after he gets done the first time.

I just think you run the risk of tarring all high contact incidents, or at least many, with the same brush of "oh he clearly played for it". Yeah you can target repeat offenders like Shuey, but umps holding preconceptions doesn't sit well with me after seeing the shit Ballas/Crowley copped over the years solely because they had bad reputations. I'm on your side, I just don't trust the AFL to implement a potential crackdown all that competently

Without this match, this weekend would have been boring. Now, Shoe has given us and the media enough material for 2 weeks.

I don't want free-kicks like those paid. I don't pay them in Auskick...

Agreed, cant blame the ump. By the word of the rule it probably wasnt the right call but the pressure on umpires to make the right call, every time, on so many variations of the rules, makes it a very tough gig.

Port had the better of the umpiring tonight but that Shuey call was wrong. Ump made a call under pressure and shit happens.
Port should have put the WCE away before the extra time anyway. Dixon was BOG if they won but his wayward kicking lost it for us. Port have given up too many games this year due to poor kicking for goal.
On to 2018....
Nice balanced view. I don't think you'll get too many arguments here on that last free kick. Real loss of composure by Port after having the game in their pocket with about 2-3 minutes to go. The goal kicking...just horrible.

Bad luck better luck next year. I must say though I did enjoy seeing the look on Koshies face after the game. Something about him annoys me almost as much as Basil Big Nose.

The thing that shits me no end with shuey is his constant playing for free kicks full stop. Along with his patented arm shrug/dropping of knees he's also pretty hot on the fall forward in the tackle(push in the back) and pretending to be held without the ball.
Everywhere he thinks he can exploit a free kick he' ll be doing his best too....its his first instinct everytime

AFL SPEAK:Clearly a very subtle and complex call on Shuey;given all the factors and the split second nature of the umps decision making window.........
Absolute horseshit....
Campaigners cheat only because the umps are dumb, confused or star gazing.
It could be stamped out within a month, never to shame the game again.
Soccer has allowed it to develop into a blight which challenges the integrity of their entire game.

Jeez all t he Eagles fans whinging about the umpiring (less bad than what we get regularly) the score review-which was clearly touched last by the port players boot, thinking they deserved the win-when port stuffed it being unable to score when they had the ball.

Its going to be an unbearable week.

i'd bet my left nut that Sonson would not have been paid in the same scenario , even though he does not lift his arm.

and our fanbase widely condemns him for it...
As have we over the years. It hasn't been as big a feature of our play since late 2014, but I dare say you'd all be celebrating a win like that if it were Freo.

Umpiring will never be perfect in this game. But I'd be happy for any player who raises their arm leading to high contact to be called to play on. It should then constitute prior opportunity and be called HTB if not disposed of in the ensuing tackle.

Which is another blight on the game. How many times do you hear supporters use the excuse that the umpires will just stuff it up if we were to implement such and such a rule. It's one of the biggest defences for not bringing in a yellow/red card system. The problem then is the umpiring. We need to fix the umpiring. It is time they went professional. Then all these rules we all know need to be implemented to fix the game will be governed correctly. Just because we have the worse adjudication system of any professional league in the world shouldn't be an excuse for accepting obvious flaws in our game.

Back on topic, I hear you, but I reckon your fear is unwarranted. I reckon it's quite easy to pick those head high tackles that are a result of the tacklee's arm and those that are legit. We just need smarter umpires. Not more of them; just smarter ones.

If there was an arm raise/shrug and the head thrown back like Shuey so well performs, i beg to differ.
The arm lift/shrug is the shitty part. It turns a below the shoulder and legal tackle in to a reckless head high tackle as the arm raises.
No easy answer to this and the rules and interpretations are becoming more and more complex every year. I absolutely do not envy what umpires have to do, especially in those pressure situations.
Bottom line, Port should have put them away well before that last call...
