Had a chance to play with Geelong, but could never make the move. For that reason I wouldn't include him.
Pretty good list by Mike, IMO. Some would put Rioli ahead of a few on the list, but at least he's there.
Reasonable points made here! What arrogance, 'he could never make the move' you claim - he could have, didn't want to. To demonstrate the sheer arrogance of your claim, check out Graham Moss, approx. 10 years before Michael, went to Melbourne for 4 years, winning the Bombers B&F 3 times & winning a Brownlow - he chose to go, didn't understand what the noise was about so chose to go home.
Stephen Michael chose not to go but any list of a top 10 indigenous footballers is a joke - a joke that only Victorians try to pass off as fact. It is about time that it is acknowledged the AFL attracts all the best players, the VFL attracted lots of the best, never all the best.
PS Basil Campbell? You know of him Koori?
Why do so many people think Stephen Michael was so great? He was good at WAFL level but once he joined The Dockers he just seemed like a standard AFL ruckmen not really that great ?
Good player but not at the level of those mentioned IMHO.Wirrpunda
On the episode the host specifically said they didn't restrict him to VFL, and they asked him about Stephen Michael and he said he didn't include him because he thought the VFL was the elite league in comparison to the SANFL and WAFL (not sure of his exact wording so I might be misrepresenting him a bit, that was the gist of it though).
Forgive my "arrogance". Geelong desperately tried to get Michael over. I don't know why he chose not to play in what was the number 1 competition in the country, the VFL. He never made the move so we, outside WA, will never know how good he was. Now if you are suggesting it is arrogant to say the VFL was the No.1 competition, then you are deluded!?What arrogance, 'he could never make the move' you claim - he could have, didn't want to. Half of them from WA. Pretty good selection but Stephen Michael needs to be on the list. He was at least the equal of Goodes.

It's all moot because Mike Shhehan"s list has one common theme - every footballer on the list played VFL / AFLlol. we will never know how good he was? has all evidence of WA football pre-AFL been destroyed? video? first-hand accounts? his sandover medals? B&Fs? 17 state and state of origin games? being named all australian captain?
no one said the VFL wasn't the no. 1 competition in the land - only that it didn't contain all of the best players in the land, like the AFL does now.

What are you trying to say? Of course the AFL today is superior to the VFL of yesteryear, but wasn't the AFL borne out of he VFL? Mike Sheehan's list is about indigenous players in the VFL / AFLSurely you aren't claiming the VFL is comparable with the AFL - its not & that's my point. .
No Wingard ? #MikePlease
Was only joking my good friend, I was just letting everyone know I love Wingard. Not serious commentTell us who he would replace? Is he better than Shaun Burgoyne with a couple of premierships so far?
Chad is a ripper no doubt ... not in the shadow of any of the greats yet, got a long way to go to catch Shaun Burgoyne.
