Minor things that annoy you about the game

I still can't believe how often you hear commentators say a player "marks the ball at its highest point".

The ball goes 10 metres in the air. How the hell is the player marking it "at its highest point"?

Of course, what they mean to say is that the player takes the ball at the highest point of their leap. But they're idiots who can't form sentences, despite literally being paid to speak. So they get it wrong. And it gets repeated.

It's like the peanuts who describe a player as "looking laconic" when they run or kick. Brayshaw is the serial offender. Do you not know what words mean?

I'm sure I've mentioned it before, but a massive peeve of mine is the LED fences that flash, rotate, move, change colour, change to another advert etc when the ball is in play. Makes it incredibly hard to focus on the play if you're sitting on the bottom level and the ball is at the other end and I imagine could be challenging for the players at times as well. Fence advertising should just be still images that don't move and when there's a break in play by all means flick to the next one.

Not a minor annoyance at all. I cancelled my seat at KP because of this. Especially bad in night games, simply can't see what's going on

Umpires calling players by their first names. They're not their mates. It comes across as very amateur and bush league.

It's gotta be the only sport where players names are used so much. Like when the umpire tells you to give the ball to "Fred" because it's his free kick. Can you just waste more time by saying to the umpire, "I don't know who that is" ?

Those mouthguards that make guys look like they're missing front teeth.

YES!

I immediately think of Alan Didak and rubbers that have been torn to shreds.

Marks are still paid for chip kicks under 25 metres.

we didn’t adopt 17-5 cos the football public is too effing stupid to understand it.

we didn’t keep Waverley.

you can’t just choose your seats when you book online.

paul couch is still not in the hall of fame whilst Anthony stevens is.

the modern stands at the mcg dont have the old dark cavern feel of the old Olympic stand.

kicking the ball on the ground after the game.

Minor issues in the AFL? They're all major as far as i'm concerned.

But here goes: Commentators and commentary in general ( just tell us who has the ball)
The reliance on meaningless stats. (David King goes overboard)
Socks not being pulled up at all times. (No wonder they keep missing goals from 30 metres out)
Port away strip ( It's awful)
No more white coats for Goal Umpires. ( Goal Umpires look terrible, the white coat gave them character)
Essendon clash away strip ( just reverse it like Richmond)
White away strips in general ( I have no idea who is playing sometimes)
The decline in use of the drop punt for goal ( They can't kick and have lost the art)
The lack of identifiable Collingwood away strip ( Indefensible they haven't got a proper away strip for matches against North)
Bring back the RED Ball! ( Is the yellow one the reason they kick so badly?)

Magnificent post!

Agree. Even worse when they call them by their nicknames. Should be team name and their number.

Players being awarded with holding frees for fumbling or just dropping the ball as soon as they get tackled.

The reliance on meaningless stats.

The stats obsession during analysis I find incredibly tedious and shallow-minded. There are 3-400 possessions for each team in a game - of which more than half are uncontested and about 12-15 will actually go through the goals. I could play on the wing in the AFL and probabvly get 15 possessions in a game - mainly because the opposition would ignore me and tag other more important players (to be honest, me doing my usual 30-metre up-and-unders is probably a net benefit to the opposition).

The stats can then be combined and twisted in a myriad of ways so that 'Player X became the first ever to have 20+ disposals, 5 tackles and change his shorts 3 times in a game since 1956' becomes lauded as a major achievement, rather than a statistical quirk.

I get that media commentators need to sound intelligent in their analysis, and the sheer volume of such discussions must inevitably mean there are ever-more desperate attempts to create ever-more trivial talking-points (and thus get their own names mentioned), but, my god, most of it just degenerates into self-referential meaningless drivel.

Western should revert to Footscray
Greater should be dropped from GWS

The weird thing about Greater Western Sydney is that no one in Western Sydney used that term. The only time you ever see it is in government planning documents.

I wanted them to be called the Western Sydney Serpents and to have a mostly green guernsey and I stand by that as I think it would have worked well.
