I'm a newshound, to the extent that I like to consider the story behind news, what makes it newsworthy etc.

I can't figure out the newsworthiness of this.

How can they charge 250k per ticket in such a shit box? Surely some competition can be created.....build a sub that can hold 50 people with actual proper safety mechanisms and luxury items like beers and food.

Or is it actually that difficult to build a sub to go that deep?

if you're happy right now you're either not paying attention or you're in the 1%

As I said. Perspective. You should try it sometime.

Things aren’t nearly as bad as you’re trying to pretend, you live in the 3rd most liveable city on the planet, and sure, some people are doing it really tough, and things could be better, but they’re not that bad.

You almost certainly wouldn’t be better off living in a different country, or a different era.

This sort ir argument is just bullshit.

It's not a competition for who can smile through the most shit.

I live where and when I live things could be worse for me but they could also be better.

Telling me to be happy with what I've got us very much like Morrison saying the women protesting outside parliament should be happy they weren't being shot.

I actually said this to my wife watching the news tonight. It’s slightly weird and a lot morbid but it almost seems like the news outlets picked up how much the public would take the piss out of this so ran with it hard.

People being trapped and in need of rescue is always an interesting story. Thai soccer team, Beaconsfield miners, etc.

As I said, get some perspective.

Also never said what you’re trying to pretend I said by equating it with Morrison.

People can have hard times, people can be in shit situations, the world can improve, but trying to argue that there’s a society wide epidemic of suffering due to billionaires is pretty myopic, and misses out on a whole lot of perspective that whatever situation most people are in today, is likely a hell of a lot less shitty than they would be in another country, or another era.

You've shifted gears a bit here, mate. Your original point was that no one could be happy unless they're in the 1%, not that others shouldn't tell you to be happy with what you've got.

nah I'm not subscribing to this one

we live in a capitalist society where the top 1% leech off the rest of us, we've got massive inflation, the RBA trying to force another 150k people into unemployment, people living in tents, one of the worst welfare systems in the OECD despite our wealth as a nation

entrenched racism

decades of bipartisan neoliberal policy, slow erosion of our education and health systems and an ever widening gap between the rich and the rest of us

corporate capture of our governments

the media class is complicit in all of this and it's not actually getting better

we're still racing to burn the planet as fast as anyone

if you're happy right now you're either not paying attention or you're in the 1%
I can't be happy with my life?

IIRC they only have enough oxygen till 8pm Sydney time tonight.

I'm guessing that if the sub hasn't imploded and they are spread all over the inside of the hull, then their oxygen would've run out a while ago. The news is listing the "recommended" time the oxygen would last in a perfect situation where all onboard is calm and in control of their breathing. I'm sure that once they realised they were in trouble they would've started panicking and greatly increased the oxygen usage burning it up pretty quickly. If they are all unconscious they may have a chance but guessing that's a slim chance.

Families might agree to leave them there with the titanic.
Mutual agreement might be difficult but a nice gesture.

I'm sure that if they actually find the sub the safety people will want it brought up to examine what caused the problem, lots of legal cases would be after the investigation results.
