Sports news first story are usually incorrect, Brown has probably signed a new deal with West Coast.

Yeah I wouldnt straight swap for Cripps either... I would consider Brown - Crips + 2nd probably fairer.

All though I would prefer to keep him, if he wanted to leave next year he would have allot more options. He would get games at allot of Melbourne clubs, Carlton, StKilda, Hawthorn, Geelong etc... If he didnt nominate a club we would possibly get a better deal.

Still would prefer to keep him though.

If Wellingham's worth pick 38 Mitch would be worth around pick 45 in the Rookie draft.

Learn the difference between what a contracted player and uncontracted player is and get back to us

this is it.

if 45 is the offer - keep him and let him go next year for zip as we will not use 45

Agreed.

Provides coverage we need in 2013, if he is desperate to leave when his contract is up we might lose out a little more than trading him this year but that is offset by having the KPD insurance next year and allowing us to plan for his exit.

wrap him up and get the deal done! straight swap for cripps (who i am very sad to see leave). Hes exactly what we need

Cripps - Out of contract, not best 22, couple of mids who arent playing are in front of him at St Kilda, has nominated West Coast
Brown - Still contracted, not best 22 at the moment but first choice back thats not playing and best 22 as soon as Glass retires, Key Back

No chance of a straight swap

How does being the first depth player in line increase his value?

Cripps was in our best 22 this season but was injured or sub for a large chunk of the season. And he wouldve no doubt cemented a spot next year. Not sure why worsfold would be keen on keeping a player that is desperate to leave. Maybe a few shuffling of picks in the 2nd or 3rd round but wont be anything too drastic. It seems as though brown has nominated st kilda too where there is a spot waiting for him.

General rule of thumb is key position players > midfielders/flankers if they are about the same level

The clincher though is one is contracted the other one isn't which is what changes values

Yes he's exactly what you need and being under contract means WC will want their pound of flesh.

Would expect WC to offer their 2nd rounder and Brown for Cripps and your Goddard compo pick (if as expected its #13). And before you get on your high horse and say thats too much WC can just jam it, they would be happy to, as Brown is their replacement should anyone of Glass, Mckenzie or Schofield go down.
Also stop and think - what are the chances of getting a player like Brown for #13 in this years draft ?

Mitch Brown cannot get a game in the seniors, he's mainly played WAFL - Pick 30-50 would be about right. Cripps was pick 24 only 2 years ago, and while he's lost a little value, he's still getting some senior games and has retained some of his value - Around pick 30-40 IMO. A straight swap Cripps for Brown is about right IMO. If WC try and up Brown's value based on his contract status then St Kilda will look elsewhere. From what I've heard, Cripps won't walk out on St Kilda. His preference is to be traded to WC however he will re-sign with St Kilda ahead of going to the draft.

Im not adverse to add something to cripps in the deal. But i just think first rounders are off limits in the situation

Brown worth more because he has the potential to fill a structural need for the next 10 years. Cripps is an outside receiver who has not IMO shown much.

Cripps + 12<-----> Brown + 18 OR Cripps + 34 <-----> Brown

OR Cripps + Ray compo from Melbourne (45) + 53 <-------> Brown

Saints also need to consider what GC need to get Hickey over the line

e.g. Hickey<-----> 34 OR Hickey, 25, 44 <--------> 12
