FFS, Pyke doesnt strike me as the kind of bloke that could easily piss of a player.

I mean hell we have players like Mackay and Douglas running around in our starting 18.

It wasn't Pyke...he wants to play for Teague who is now the Bloos forward coach. Add in his GF wants to study at a Melbourne university. I'm not sure which one. She was at Flinders Uni. here. Again always money helps. IMO we got a fair deal.

IMO we got a fair deal.
Yeah, seems so.
The irrelevant Cornes Snr. (a legend in his own mind) bagged the trade:
https://www.fiveaa.com.au/sport/Graham-Cornes-UNLOADS-On-Adelaide-s-McGovern-Trade
He asks a few snooty questions which he answers himself:
"Did they even ask for Carlton’s first pick in the draft?
Did they demand Carlton find a top ten pick before they would even look at the deal?
Did they call Carlton’s bluff and stall till the last minute?
Guess not."
The answer to all three is, "Cornesy, you just don't know".

The actual strength of the deal won't be know for a good while yet, after we see what the Club does with Pick 13 and how McAdam develops.

His Brother is also considered rather chunky.

The McGoverns are footballers - not swimsuit models.

Pretty much what my gut looks like but I’m 51. He needs to do some crunches as do I, but not much chance of that happening.

Posted a few time on the Port board thread re. Did they win the Burgoyne trade?

The trade wasnt too bad, (2 first rounders) they just stuffed the selections/development.

Instead of Moore they could have got Talia who went a few picks later.
Instead of Pittard they could have got Fyfe who went a few picks later.

If they selected Talia and Fyfe they would have won the trade hands down but Moore and Pittard saw them lose the trade - even though the trade was identical.

Pick 10-13 for Gov is OK, if we stuff the pick that is on us - not the trade.

Ask youself if we got pick 3 for Gov and that player ended up a Toumpas would you say the trade for pick 3 sucked?

As long as the trade is around the mark pick wise it is up to the club selecting to get the "value" out of the pick.

Wonder if Teague supplies Mitch with lifetime membership at Brunettis and La Romana.

1) So have we --- Laird and Sloane in particular. What's your point?
2) High end talent we've lost:
--- Dangerfield, for sure, Brownlow medallist and hard nut, but look what he's become at Geelong viz a self-promoting, smug, media-attention-seeking, diving/flopping JSelwood clone. He will always put himself first and seems to love being the Big Fish (Cat? ;)) in a little Geelong pond.
--- Gunston and Davis also for sure. I don't know about Gunston's reasons, but Davis was always going to do his two years then go home, which has nothing to do with the Crows/Club/team/culture.
--- then there's daylight, then
--- Tippett/Lever/McGovern are all money-chasing egomaniacs and were team de-stabilisers. Good riddance.
--- Cameron, well, looks like he actually did go home for family reasons, but he only ever played 4 or 5 good games/year, with the 2017 PF a standout.

It's not "a big problem" for the Crows only, since Interstate players are always a flight risk and there will always be someone who thinks he's worth more than he's being paid. Somebody above made a good point that Gov and his Manager negotiated his deal very poorly if he was unhappy before the end of 2017. Who cares what Gibbs is being paid? Gov shows potential only at this time and cannot compare himself to Gibbs, yet, if ever.
I think we have gone a long way towards fixing the problem, and contrary to popular belief it wasn't that we had players leaving, all teams all around the world have that. What the issue was was we got in return for them, we were becoming a feeder club, find and develop talent that others then poached off us for bugger all, GWS are becoming this now.
What we have turned around is what we get back, Danger was the first time we stood up and said Hold on, you pay up. did we win it probably not but we did better than past years, If Gore had been what he promised and with Jnr you'd probably say we tied.
But with Lever we won outright 2 firsts for 1, forget the steak knives and what we did with the pick we made Melb pay up - Win.
With Charlie, rookie pick, potential and a handful of good games for 12 - It's a hell year we won.
With Gov. pick 47, some highlights, injuries and potential we got McAdam and 13, again forget steak knives. That's a win.

The trick is to make the buyer pay for the value added to the product, not just give it away. We've started to do that and we need to keep doing that. Be an Essendon at the trade table not a GWS, then clubs don't want to poach your players or you improve through trading. Either way you win.

ummm... it is done and dusted.

Boil your rabbits somewhere else.
Do you think Carlton can climb of the bottom of the ladder next year with the introduction of McGovern?

Not sure if it was discussed but was interesting hearing Carlton (can’t remember who but think was SOS or certainly from within the club) are planning on using him in defense.

Also makes you wonder if it was more than coincidence that the only time we ever played him a full game in defense was against them. May have been in discussions already and was a chance to showcase him where they are going to use him.

Also makes the being coached by Teague again point less valid as he won’t be his direct line coach

I was hoping for better but pick 13 and steak knifes wasnt a bad result. But why did we go so early. Was it so we can ditect all our energies into the Stengle super trade.

Sydney was always going to trade that pick for points and there were several clubs that had multiple picks in the 20s to get that done. Forgetting about McGovern, if we had 8, 16, 21, 26, 28 and 40, I think 26, 28 and 40 for pick 13 is a great result. Our three worst picks which all push out after f/s and academy bids. It's overs, but really Sydney was the only club really motivated to trade for points so it was a bit of a race for it. If we waited too long that pick would have been gone and I am surprised that Gold Coast didn't make a similar offer with their 2nds and 3rds.

As for the trade with Carlton, I wasnt happy. It depends what pick McAdam was really going to be taken in the live draft as to whether it was a good trade or not. If McAdam is as good as people are saying then we actually won that part of the trade too. tbd.

The more I think about the two parts of this trade, I am happier to have taken unders from Carlton in order to beat others to the Sydney pick. Not many moves left on the board now.

^^^ Good post.

If that's the only trade we do that will impact our first choice 18 then it's not a good look for a team who is supposedly in a premiership window. In a non window year if that was the only trade we did than you would give us a pass, a C perhaps. However, as we are in a premiership window we should be adding to our first choice 18 rather than losing. The last 2 years we have lost Lever, McGovern and Cameron and only traded in Gibbs. So this year, so far, you would have to give us a D, a fail.

SOS has said Gov wants to play forward and that's where they'll use him

“Mitch has been a terrific player for the Crows over the past three seasons and we believe he’ll strengthen our forward line and add another layer of depth to our emerging list as we head into the next phase of our development.

“He’s got a great pair of hands and we’ve all seen how accurate he is in front of goal, so we’re excited to see what he can produce alongside our young forwards that we’ve drafted in Charlie Curnow, Harry McKay and Tom De Koning.

the plan was always going to be to go to the draft with the club having locked in 3 top 25 picks after the 2017 trade period.

Agree with the going early. Carlton were the winners considering Gov was contracted. Don't know why we gave up pick 40. Could have been handy considering some of the fire sales going.

Agreed. Reid blinked, like usual. Not a good negotiator. If Sydney wanted more that should’ve been up to Carlton to work out, not us. Then giving up a 2019 3rd? For no good reason Reid decided to bend over.

Really? I heard a trade radio interview soon after the trade where someone from Carlton clearly stated they recruited him to play defense. Didn’t hesitate either
I mean, he might spend time in defense if they see him as the 7th man to throw back when they're getting belted, but they've got more than a few talls in Weitering, Plowman, Marchbank and Jones, I wouldn't think they'd need him there.

West coast Probably would than come over the top and offered Sydney pick 20/22 for pick 13 which their could then pass onto Geelong for Kelly. Carlton were never going to give us their 2019 1st pick and losing a 2019 3rd rd is no big deal.
