Player #32 - Patrick Cripps

Pictured: Carlton's plan to wear orange training jumpers to lure even more GWS players in is working well

Patrick Cripps is Carlton's co-captain who was a champion of the game up to 2019. His sharp decline the past two years has been labelled as 'temporary' for long enough but now is the time to call it out for what it is: the new normal.
It's a bold statement, but Cripps is an okish, slightly above average midfielder who gets lauded as a champion. He is the North Melbourne Football Club BigFooty board 'player focus' thread of the AFL world. He has a reputation that is so far in front of his output over the past few years that he may as well change his surname to Clarkson.

I do acknowledge that there was a time when he was in the same conversation as players such as Marcus Bontempelli, Clayton Oliver and Gavin Urquhart but that time is over. This is now and our nasal cavities have had sufficient time to process what the Carlton chefs are preparing.

Cripps has won 3 x John Nicholls medals, which if you like poetry is awarded to Carlton's best and fairest and is named after their former ruckman who spent time in prison for embezzlement and larceny. Nicholls himself has 5 medals, although I have been strongly advised not to speculate on how he came to acquire them.

A 195cm and 95 kg monster, Cripps is bigger than most midfielders in the AFL. Hell, he's bigger than many KPPs, Bulldogs ruckman and on par with many Bay 13 regulars' wives. In past years he's used that size advantage to win the ball and hand it off to Carlton's outside runners, and boy have GWS drafted a lot of them. In the past two years opposition midfielders set up a little better at the stoppage, and Cripps' lack of spread ability is now getting exposed. His opponents run away from him and watching Cripps lumbering along trying to keep up with them is a sad sight. He has drifted forward at times this year, and did mange to kick a few goals although he was more a 'stand and mark' type of player rather than a 'leading' forward.

Cripps is contracted until 2027 after signing a contract extension this year. It's a bold call by Carlton, especially considering Cripps hasn't exactly been moving with much freedom (the other players have been calling him 'Lockdown 6' behind his back).
There was some speculation he might be tempted by an offer to return to Western Australia this year and play with his brother (not like Atkins) who plays for the West Coast Eagles, but Cripps chose to re-commit to Carlton long term. He also publicly supported Teague this year and that turned out... oh, nevermind.

Good luck playing under Vossy next year Crippa, and welcome to the Bottom 50 for 2021.

Jesse Hogan is still a better player than Patrick Cripps.

Top 50 aussie shows ?

I'll kick it off

Nah, Paul Hogan was just a Benny Hill rip-off. Lano and Woodley’s tv show from the late nineties is number one for mine. You stole my imaginary girlfriend.
