Moises Henriques - WTF

credit to the selectors on this one. Nobody was wanting him to play but he has shown maturity beyond his years. Bowling wasnt much but will get better with experience in india. Seems to have a good head on his shoulders.

Batted himself into the 6/7 spot for rest of the series. who knows beyond that.

THIS is what happens when you pick players in form for that particular format. Same with Bird.

pretty much this.

i wasn't a massive fan of his selection on the tour as i thought he'd been given a bit of a free pass away from years of shitness, but at least he has a fantastic shield summer.

and he has made every post a winner in this match so credit where it's due to everyone involved in that selection. he has always the talent. i think he was burdened with a lot of pressure in his earlier years and being a bit mentally fragile was probably the big reason he never made the leap from dominating grade cricketer to good (or better) state cricket for so long.

if there were any doubts he has turned a corner, this has probably just about all but erased them. at least as a steve level cricketer anyway. whether he continues to be a good test cricketer is obviously still in front of us.

ultimately we don't have batsmen with sustained performances in shield level over numerous years. if we did, they'd have been picked. probably the only one with a legitimate gripe is chris rogers but at 35 that is not getting turned around.

so the next best thing i guess is to pick guys who are scoring runs over the previous weeks/months and hope that form is good enough to go to the next level.

this is especially true when picking guys with poor techniques like smith, hughes, maxwell and co. because when they aren't scoring runs and just not picking the ball up well, they have nothing to fall back on.

It's only one game, but he surprised me with how good he looked at the crease - calm, watchful and confident, unlike everyone else bar Clarke, picked up the length and bounce beautifully. Good signs there, hopefully he can show a bit with the ball too.

He's always had the talent, he was very highly rated by the St George club side in Sydney a number of years ago if I recall correctly. I guess it's just taken longer for him to develop. Would be an interesting selection for the Ashes tour!

A lovely suprise! Only positive to take from the test for me.

Clarke tonning up is par(!) and patto's form just makes me sad he is so injury prone.

MH should become a regular for 10 years. Big call on one test but his cool head impressed more than his scorez for me.

Is it just me who has often seen him look like that? Even in last year's BBL final when he caned the Warriors attack to all parts in the final, I was thinking 'at least it's Mozz doing it' as he's an enjoyable batsman to watch when he gets going. Very nicely balanced at the crease.

I was really impressed with his play against the spinners (not that he had much fast bowling to contend with)
Used his feet really well and was watching the ball all the way and playing late, also put the bad balls away.
Great first game, well above what I was expecting. Also spoke really well when interviewed after each inning :thumbsu:

No, I see that as well, although it is when I think about it

Pretty much the only positive from the match besides Pattinson's bowling. His first class career may not show outstanding results but much of his early career wasn't up to standard and hence his batting average is less than someone who might come into the side at say 21. We need a good young middle order batsmen and hopefully Henriques is one, has quality leadership potential as well which will work in his favour you would imagine.

If he can cement his place in the side, I imagine he will be earmarked as the next captain. There aren't really any other long-term leadership candidates currently.

Once upon a time I hoped that Michael Hill would be the next captain of Australia, but he hasn't developed as quickly as most people expected. I still think he will play Test cricket, but he probably won't have the seniority in the team when they start looking to groom Clarke's replacement.

I think you'll find that David Warner will be the next captain of Australia. Has all the signs that Clarke did around the same age

Warner's being groomed mostly in the absence of any other candidates. I agree he's currently the big front runner, but I think it really depends on who's in the Test side when the next vice-captain has to be selected.

If there's someone else there with a good number of Tests under their belt, proven leadership chops and a secure place in the side I think Warner will be passed over in the long format.

That's the thing, in recent times the most I've seen of him with the bat has been in T20, and I'm reluctant to judge players one way or the other in that format (although his total lack of touch in the latest Big Bash was notable). If he keeps this up, I'll have to concede the selectors might've got one right by going off Moises' first-class form.

As for Warner, he's Clarke's partner in crime on and off the field - for better or worse, he's definitely next in the leadership line at this stage.
