Letter from the President: Brand research project

President Dave Barham provides an update on the club's brand research project.
By essendonfc.com.au - 1 hr ago

To all our Fans and Members,

The Essendon Football Club has a proud history as one of the oldest clubs in the AFL and we have a strong recognisable brand.

We are conducting a preliminary research project which centres around the Essendon brand and its elements.

The research project is in its early phase. Members and supporters have been and will continue to be canvassed as part of this process, in addition to the engagement of multiple Essendon Football Club stakeholders.

We have a proud history of more than 150 years and a deep connection to our members and supporters. This is and will always be respected and embraced.

There is no immediate action to change the club logo or any elements of the club brand. This is a longer-term project with significant work to be completed.

We proudly recognise that our future legacy begins with our proud history.

We will always be called the Bombers.

- Dave Barham

This simple change would improve our logo a million times.

It's the silver that I don't like.

Here's something I had laying around. Parts of it (like the backwards N) wouldn't fly, so to speak, on an official club logo but nevertheless...

We should def be wearing red shorts with our clash jumper. Dunno why we don’t.
AFL policy that away teams wear white shorts I'm pretty sure

North Melbourne got it right when they mandated that their branding be North Melbourne. Any logo change has to be prominently 'Essendon', not Bombers.

I know from a merch perspective I prefer when it says "Bombers", not "Essendon"
It's more "inclusive" for a logo to say Bombers, in the sense that many who live in Melbourne, and most of supporters interstate, would have no emotional connection to Essendon the place.

Where you stand on that issue boils down to what your answer out of the two words when asked what team you support.

For me, we're the Essendon Football Club. Apart from Western Bulldogs I really don't enjoy nicknames being included in the name, or acronyms.

That's because they were suffering from re-location trauma. Constantly being asked to become Gold Coast this, Tasmania that. Mandating such a thing is their way of fighting such a possibility, or even folding, in a minnow-club sort of way. It was their "insurance policy" - rather than realising that it's the culture that keeps you from that, not a name.

But we're not a minnow club. Never were, never will be. And we will never be compared to North, nor will we ever be within the realm of relocating. That same fear North had is not with us - hence why we can proudly wear our name, Essendon or Bombers, in the similar vein that the Hawks do, without suffering from the same tremaurs that we see with North people. We are and always will be proud of both titles.

Having said that, any design that follows in similar style to one I've laid out can easily be altered to either have the word Essendon added at the top or swap the word Bombers for Essendon in the same font as well.

Fair enough, for me, we're the Bombers, I rarely say Essendon. I grew and up and live in Melbourne's east, so saying Essendon gives me a feeling of dissonance that Bombers doesn't.

Plus, fighter jets/bombers are cool af.

The Dons for me, or just Essendon. We've been called the Dons since forever, Same Olds briefly, Essendonians for a while (later became the name of the coterie group). "Bombers" is a wartime/post-war thing, which was then incorporated into the club song.

These days being near the airport reminds me of Qantas more than WWII.

Speaking of jets, there's probably some inspiration to be taken from other clubs called 'the jets'. Seems to be a more popular nickname for a club with a fighter plane mascot than 'bombers', so there'd be more ideas there. e.g. Winnipeg Jets in the NHL:

Obviously don't need the maple leaf or necessarily the compass, but I like the plane itself. Make something similar black on a red background or vice versa and go from there.
