Most overrated player in the AFL currently?

Naughton for me.

Would make a great defender.

Launches himself at the ball which makes the commentators jizz themselves but really he's quite ineffective.

I'd take Marshall any day of the week over Naughton.

As a forward yes, but as I said earlier in yhis thread, Naughton could easily be an AA calibre defender

Sean Darcy, can't run or jump and kicks like a wet noodle.

In an era where 'athleticism' is always sprouted to any big man who can run fast and jump high, don't you think it's refreshing to see an old school competitive ruckman?
He's as slow as Justin Madden but Darcy's a beast when he is fit and firing.

Andrew Brayshaw. Don't get me wrong I think he's a solid player and a type of player every club wants but I just think he's far too vanilla.

It’s an interesting one. He is never going to have a highlights reel that makes people sit up and say wow, he’s not tall, is an ordinary kick on goal - but he’s the heartbeat of the team and the players gave him the MVP last year.

Now, normally I think players tend to go for the big name (no low profile player has won it in the last 20 years) - so that tells me the players see something in him that the punters don’t.

Ask most Freo fans and we’d say Serong is more damaging, but when Brayshaw was playing injured at the start of the year we were well down - and it’s no coincidence our better results coincided with his fitness improving.

In other words, name a player who is out of form and kick them while they're down. Looking at the names offered on the first pages of this thread:

Tex
De Goey
Rankine
Clayton Oliver
Jeremy Cameron

Just goes to show, people on here really don't have a clue.

Harris Andrews.

Beaten easily and often when it matters, especially against Geelong. Believe it was 'Fev' who said he'd kick 10 every week playing on him.

Pretty good footballer, but not the A-grader he's made out to be.
Coming off a best on ground performance mind you. Did you take into account Fev is a f&$k wit?

It doesn't perfectly fit here, but commentators have this amazing habit of absolutely overrating big name players when that player's peak was years ago. Luke Darcy is the worst, but he's not alone. It's like they're in a time warp, they'll froth at the mouth over a player who was a star in 2017 and seemingly not notice they clearly aren't the same anymore. This applies to Martin, Dangerfield, especially Franklin, and so on. Pretty much solidifies the view that they really don't pay attention and are probably drunk half the time.

You’re entitled to your’e opinion, I’m entitled to mine. Agree or not I will stick to my guns.

Richmond supporters rave about him as one of the all time greats. Wouldn’t even be in the top 10 key forwards of all time.
I don't think Richmond fans would have him in the top 10 key forwards of all time. That's Legend status IMO. He was an excellent player that is still finding ways to add value despite his obvious decline. He will go down as an all-time Tigers player, and I'd imagine a deserved HOF member.

Yep, and you have to love the immediate silence when any of them make a basic stuff up. Or when they kick straight to the opposition.
Which is why players like daicos, dusty (albiet no longer top 20), petracca etc get so much hate.
Reckon if there was criticism when it's due, the hyperbole when good stuff happens wouldn't be as noticeable

Done a few good things at important moments, sure.

4 flags, you don't need to be a good player to play in a premiership.

No best and fairest or AA selection.
20 seasons in the competition, a regular match-winner including finals and grand finals. Could still burst out of the centre and send in through at post height even after a knee injury that took away a yard of pace. One of the most skilful players the game has seen, and on top of that he was as smart and tough as they come. His two nicknames were "silk" and "clutch".

But no AA selection? Yeah he can't have been that good. After all there are plenty of average players around with 4 premierships to their name. Like, uh, who exactly?

Absolutely. If even one commentator would dare to mention that Daicos doesn't exactly relish a physical contest you'd at least know they're paying attention. Martin's form noticeably shifted this year once he seemed to realise he wasn't 25 anymore and simply couldn't just shrug guys off as he once could. Once he started taking the first options more he has been far better.

is it? How many first year players get hyped up beyond belief and then dont live up to said hype...people...overrate them.

Nobody overrates Ward. Most people wouldn't recognise him if he popped up in their soup.

Calling a 19 year old kid who has 21 AFL games to his credit a "vanilla" running player is objectively a ridiculous comment.

Actually i now believe it's Shai Bolton

Over 1 million dollars P/A for the next 5 seasons

That's obscene
He isn't getting paid 1 million for the next 5 years that's bull dust, don't read those stupid articles by CODE they are just guessing.
He was getting offered that by other clubs he took less to stay.

The HUN reported the same thing (that is where Code got their info from)

I read in the paper myself

And it's not front loaded or back ended either, it's over 1 mil each for the next 5 years

You believe everything written in the papers? I can tell you 100% that's wrong, he might have 1 year paid at 1 million, but over the contract it is more in the lines of 800K which is still tons but he is well worth it he is a match-winner has won us our last two games.
