if jack martin is in the top five paid afl players then he is overpaid and overrated

He’s been a big reason Carlton have been better this year. Overpaid maybe but not overrated

A ruck can only do so much, they win the hitout to advantage and the midfield and forwards have to do the rest and look at Melbourne for example up until two weeks ago they had every opportunity under the sun to hit the scoreboard after Gawn's hitouts but they constantly pissed it up against the wall.
Isn't that a very good supporting reason as for why rucks ARE overrated? As you said - they can only do so much. And I totally agree. Their influence can only go as far as the midfielders at their toes. How often do we see rucks dominate hit outs only for their side to lose clearances? Surprisingly often. There are some very good rucks going around but I don't think any of them are true stars of the competition, because their role doesn't allow them to influence games enough.

He reminds me of Akermanis, but that is based on a sample of 2 games.
If can keep it up he will be a star.

It really makes me laugh my arse off to see first year players mentioned in "over-rated" belly button gazing threads.

For mine Dusty fits the bill perfectly.
From the Pies, De Goey.
Damned fine players no doubt, extremely over rated in the big scheme of things, but then that is the way.

He may well put lie to my comment, but only time will tell.
Martin is one of the best players in the competition and will finish his career with accolades most players will never get near. How can he be overrated?

Martin seems to be a victim of his own success. He was so dominant in 2017 and in all recent finals and is so team oriented that these days people talk him down because he doesn’t have 26 and kick 2 every home and away game.

His finals have been nothing short of breathtaking since 2017. He has been very good in plenty of home and away games.

Interestingly, the Blues have looked better with Cripps doing less. Speaks to the idea of Cripps 'Heroball' not really translating to winning footy.
You speak as though it’s some great revelation that a bad team relying on one great player to get the job done doesn’t result in wins. What else would you expect to happen in a game that relies on 22 players contributing to win?

Carlton was always bound to look better regardless of Cripps once the list improved a bit due to off season moves and players developing which is what has happened this year.

Cripps having giant performances will still matter going forward. Players like him dominating a game can be the difference in big games.
Reminds me of the commentary fuss when Chris Judd would go forward at Carlton, when he could barely lift his arms above his mummified shoulders, and rarely ever took an overhead mark or kicked a goal when there.
I think I could count on one hand the amount of times Judd rested forward in his Carlton heyday. It barely ever happened. Cripps rests forward far much more this year. He’s also dangerous down there due to his size and marking ability, he is just a dodgy kick for goal.

Did you watch Rankine in the under 18’s? He’s lightning. One of the best athletes and probably the most talented kid to come through the pathway in the last decade. I’m sure by the end of this year you won’t think he’s slow

I hope i am wrong - sort of. He is exciting to watch and so skilled by foot (something the AFL really is missing).

And perhaps even if he isn't super fast, he cant still dominate - some players have that knack, like Green.

I will take your word for it that he's quick - and let's both keep our eyes on it, see how he progresses.

Can't even get a game in arguably the worst team in the competition

From what I understand, his contract was very front loaded. So he’s in that top bracket because of that.

Having said that, he’s a good footballer who suits what the blues need. He is pretty versatile & I’d have loved him at WC.

Treloar, keeps gathering possessions which would normally be good but his kicking and decision making is atrocious at times, slaughtered the Collingwood forwards on the weekend.

Some players win flags off their own boot some players cost their team flags off their own boot.

Dusty doesn't have stinkers but sometimes "Dusty's been a bit quiet ay? But you just feel like he's ready to explode, don't you BT/Duck?"

Dusty has credits in the bank with his final records and 2 norm Smith medals (Although I still reckon Houli should have won it in 2017)

I would honestly put forth the argument that if The Pies had Dusty instead of Pendlebury, they would have won at least 2 flags under Buckley, esp in 2018.

And so yes, by association, I say Scott Pendlebury is overrated a lot, his recent finals performances have not been stellar.

Dev Smith. Supposedly he's outrageously talented but when does it all actually translate into being more than a bog average plodder who has trouble finding the pill?
Still not as disappointing as what O'meara's been.........Nothing more than a solid battler with a good rig
