Sounds a bit like Paul Curtis.

Given the slim pickings and our record with the MSD historically, I’m less worried about position and more concerned with them actually being able to play League football.

Not close enough to the power or talent level of Curtis to compensate for that kind of gamestyle imo.

I admire the Sam Lowson story but wonder if his footballing is getting a little overhyped?

Think he'll do well in an already strong side but plays as a small marking target much more often than a crumber.

Most definitely.

I've been saying all year, I don't think his game translates at all to AFL footy. He's a solid lump, who can move at VFL and local footy and kick bags.

He's Ben McKinley 2.0.

He's nowhere near mobile enough for AFL footy as a small medium/forward.

The best we could hope from him would be a version of Sam Lloyd, who came into the league at 23, not 28.

Not only that, we have about 5-6 types on the list like him already and we have Brayden George fit next year.

Would be a ridiculous selection in my eyes.

Now Maric plays a similar half forward role at the moment, but he plays higher, is almost 10 years younger, a late bloomer and has played as an intercepting half back at times this season.

Don’t think it is necessarily just a question of crumber v small marking target.

One current hole on our list is a really fast small forward capable of pressuring everything and kicking around 1-1.5 goals a game with the occasional big game (spicer is in the maybe pile, but you need a few of his types). Lowson is not that type.

While kicking goals and quite capable of crumbing, I wouldn’t say he pressures a lot and looks to mark first. He is quickish, but he’s not electric. He plays very similarly to Cooper Harvey and, arguably, and a few of our other medium forwards.

With Cooper showing good form (I think Cooper has a far higher ceiling), Z being Z, Ford maybe finding a place on the wing, Curtis needing games, George being highly rated and Sheezel dominating a similar half forward forward, I’m just not sure Lowson is a pressing need atm.

In saying that, I have no issue picking him up as he’s a natural goal kicker, age isn’t a major issue and the msd is generally a shot in the dark anyway, but there are better options.
I like Declase, Teal, Casalini (192cm type in the Johnson from Pies mould) and even Hansen as a prospective electric small forward type.

That sums it up. There's a bit of Lachlan Hosie in this one I reckon.

If there's nobody leaping Newcombe style on our ranking sheets, I'd rather swing big on some 208cm boom-bust kid or an erratic but super fast small forward who matches your description.

Somebody walks out of the MSD with a good player each year its been run. Hopefully we can join that group.

Or anyone that Sooup talks up…

Maric is the Newcombe of this year though really....

Whilst he's not had the full season in the VFL as a 20 year old like Newcombe at that point, he's been too good for the u/18 comp in most of his games, been dominant in some of the state trial games and then had 15 touches and 2.2 as a half forward in his only VFL game.

I think West Coast will pick him though, I doubt we pass if available.

I reckon he'd be playing games for us within 3-4 rounds.

l would rather we look at a KPF than defender.. outside of Larkey and CCJ we are a bit on the short side..Especially with Comben and Xerri injured..wouldnt mind looking at Jack Buller 199cm 99kg forward/ruck

I could be wrong but I’m not sure Buller has the mobility to be an AFL level Full forward. He isn’t a big clunking contested mark, but he is decent on the lead. Clubs have inquired about his GPS data which makes me question if he has the tank to play AFL straight off the bat.

I don’t mind Maric, but he plays too much like a 3rd tall/Zurhaar imo. Even though he is 193cm he isn’t a true key position player. Personally, I think Maric still has plenty to work on, and he wouldn’t play senior footy for us this season unless we had a multitude of injuries in the forward line. I do however, like that he has some flexibility in his game in the fact that he can play deep forward, high half forward or across half back. There is plenty of talent there, but he is still a work in progress.

Is there any way to see yet which players have nominated 18-month contracts?

There's a very good chance that whoever we're taking will be on that list.

l hope that we are of those clubs...

Souup roos_fanatic08 what are your thoughts on Ethan Stanley. Could he possibly fill a wing need?

I'll tell you what comes to mind immediately - he nailed one of the best kicks I've ever seen on a football field earlier this season against I reckon it was Geelong - I don't know if he meant it but it was a ridiculous inside 50m to a teammate running towards goal.

There's certainly something there to work with, but he's not finding it enough at VFL level at this stage for me. Only touching it 13 times a game and there's a lack of a stand-out trait at this stage. Admittedly, I haven't seen a ton of him, but they're my thoughts based on what I have seen.
