How many players have played with multiple guernsey numbers over their career? At Collingwood I can think of Nick Maxwell, Marty Clarke, Ryan Lonie.

by saying 2 or more the list is endless.... most young players get a high number than get elevated to a low number.

3 or more might be a harder list to fill as i couldn't think of one straight of the top of my head.

Jay Neagle, David Hille, Jason Laycock, Jay Nash, Andrew Lovett, Brent Stanton, Andrew Welsh, to name a few.

James Hird is one from the past.

Think there are quite a few at Geelong:

Shannon Byrnes was 46
Jason Davenport was rookie listed last year and has 1 now
Ryan Gamble was 36 I think and is 15 now
Tom Harley was 27 at Port, 37 when he first came to Geelong and 2 now
Josh Hunt was 41 and now 8
Don't think Tom Lonergan was always 13
Cam Mooney was obviously something else at the Roos
As was Ottens at Richmond (5)
Scarlett was 41 I think before going to 30

Pendles has had 2 Different Numbers

David Cloke was 33 - when he came back to Richmond after Collingwood he wore 16.

Kane Pettifer started at 8 - moved to 15 so Tom Roach could have Dad's number (gee, that went well).

I think Grant Lawrie did the same for Gary Pert at Fitzroy (3 to 34).

David Bourke might have done the smallest number change - started with 32 and then went to 30 when Francis's number necame available.

Mark Merenda had 3 numbers at Richmond - 39, 28, 8.

Peter Moore was No 10 when he started at Melbourne - then he switched back to 30. Jeff White went 34-11-34.

Paul Sarah was No 13 when he started at Richmond - after a while, he thought it was unlucky, so he switched to 25. He wasn't told until later that 25 was Richmond's 'Injury Curse' number. (Apparently, several players in a row had bad injuries through their careers when wearing 25 - Eric Leech being the one when it became famous. I think no-one wore it for quite a while after him).

And in the old days, players often had to switch to another jumper after theirs got torn in a game - Leigh Matthews famously wore 53 one day.

Yes, I'm a number nerd.

Kieran Jack was 48, now 15
Ed Barlow was 41, now 11
Nick Malceski was 40(I think), now 9
Ryan O'Keefe was 39, now 5
Kennelly was 41(I Think), now 17

Craig Bolton, Hall, Everitt, Davis, Richards, Playfair, Mattner, Jolly all had different numbers at there previous clubs.

Newman - 35 to 1
Thursfield - 36 to 2
Mcguane - 38 to 16
Daffy - 44 to 10
Hall - 37 to 20

Apparently Jake King was going to change from 46 to 13 this year but changed his mind when he got a letter from a young kid saying that he just got the number 46 on his new Richmond guernsy.

Port:

Tredrea - 16 to 1
Salopek - 31 to 3
Motlop - 15 to 4 (19 at the Kangaroos)
Lade - 20 to 5
Peter Burgoyne - 26 to 7
Shaun Burgoyne - 37 to 8
Surjan - 39 to 9
Lonie - 34 to 12
Pearce - 41 to 16
Kane Cornes - 39 to 18
Brogan - 42 to 20
Wilson - 15 to 21
Bentley - 41 to 22
White - 40 to 24
Cassisi - 41 to 25
Thurstans - 40 to 28

And no, I didn't know all of them off the top of my head. :p

Sean Rusling 28/2
Ryan Lonie 37/3

John Anthony 31/9
Scott Pendlebury 16/10
Shane O'Bree 19 > 11 at Collingwood

Loads, loads more of course.

Bailey - 36 to 1
Roughead - 35 to 2
Lewis - 40 to 3
Ladson -18(i think) to 4
Mitchell - 28 to 5
Osbourne - 40 to 7
Ellis - 32 to 8
Young - 45 to 11
Sewell - 28 to 12
Birchall - 37(i think) to 14

McGlynn - 43 to 22 to 21
Tuck - 38 to 22
Buddy - 38 to 23
Gilham -42 to 27
C. Brown - 32 to 30

Seems players that start with 28( Mitch & Sewell), 38( Buddy & Tuck), 40( Lewis & Ossy) seem to go ok.

To answer the question.. 4139. (At least)

Jack Regan wore eleven different numbers (27, 32, 20, 24, 25, 16, 22, 18, 23, 1, 2). In fact a lot of Collingwood players of that era (Phonse Kyne, Alby Pannam, Gordon Coventry, Jack Knight, Leo Morgan, Len Murphy etc etc) wore in excess of eight different numbers over the course of their careers.

More recently.. Aaron James wore six different numbers (51, 38, 21, 4, 23 and 26), while the likes of Chris Bond, Dale Kickett, Sean Charles wore five (among many others). Four is quite common even among current players.

For The Dogs (in recent years)
#3 Everitt wore 29
#4 Cross wore 38
#5 Boyd wore 42
#11 Street wore11
#18 Stack wore 33
#20 Hill wore 31
#23 McDougall wore 32

That is a fairly low amount compared to other clubs, it occurs often and is nothing uncommon

2 numbers is very common. What would be more interesting is players having 3 or more numbers at one club, or players who ended up with a higher number than previosuly. eg. Going from 25 to 30.
