In the NBA if you play a certain amount of senior games in a season then you're eligible for a championship ring, even if you don't play in the Finals.

I think its fair and recognises that you have to work over the whole season to win a premiership/championship.

So Murphy can still get nothing.

How surprising that the majority getting stuck in are Roos, Dees, Saints, Blues, Tigs, Dockers...

Starvin for a flag.

Just have pity on the poor buggers.

You doggies fans have been finally released of your pain and frustration.

The other 6 continue to suffer.

One of my mates years ago played reserves for Burnie Dockers. Was one of their best players all season but was dropped for the grand final as the seniors hadn't made theirs so they dropped as many players back as they could.

Long story short they won and gave him a medal at the b&f but he said it felt really awkward as h didn't play in the game and was pretty pissd about bein dropped.

Had a party where we got drunk and raffled some stuff off. His ex, who was a bit of a stalker, ended up winning his medal. Awkward...

I honestly can't understand all this hoopla about the damn medal.

If you win a flag, you win a flag.

If LRT hurls his 2005 medal off a bridge, Swans supporters aren't going to forget that he was a critical part of the first flag in our lifetime.

The mantlepiece that this particular medal sits on isnt going to change the fact that Beveridge helped break their drought or that Bob only played 3 games.
Agreed. Afaic the Wikipedia edit that says you're a gold medallist holds about the same amount of sentimental value as the Olympic gold medal itself. Same here.

I had a quiet chat with Doug Hawkins on this very topic. I arksed him his thoughts on building a statue for Bob Murphy out the front of that pub in Braybrook. They have already erected 2 statues in honour of Ted Whitten and Douggie himself, and positioned them close to each other.

With a bit of fiddling, I reckon they might be able to squeeze Bob's head between the 2. Doug didn't respond as he was inebriated.

People bagging Beveridge for what he did truly disgust me.

If you think it was anything contrived you are a sad person.

Beveridge is a star and I was there to see him make the decision in the moment. It's why he had the players play with the heart they did ... A very special coach ...
Sorry :(

Dont forget the Bob special.. Clenched fits ala The Titanic

In the end, it doesn't matter who keeps the medal - what matters is that they keep handing it back to each other as publicly as possible for as long as possible to maintain the generosity-momentum over the off-season. It's all about work rate at the Doggies.
This is what the handball training was leading to...

Haha I'm not getting stuck in.

I'm just saying it was a really nice moment when Bevo gave him the medal, but he shouldn't have received one from the AFL as he didn't actually play a game. But I do think they could expand who receives one, to include players who played multiple senior games over the season, its kind of unfair if they contribute to the season and dont get recognised.

It is only a matter of time before the AFL changes the rules regarding Premiership medals and awards one to every player who plays a senior game throughout the year. I have long believed that this should happen. The Premiership is the culmination of a season long effort and all that contribute should be rewarded. Having said that, given the AFLs love of handing out retrospective gongs it is probably on the cards that every Premiership club player since 1897 will end up with one. I can picture a lot of young kids taking their great, great, great grandfathers medallion in for show and tell at school. Nice to be in the medal making business.
