My 22 for round 1 next year

Yes i did see his name mentioned in another thread. However he didn't play football this year which will naturally affect his preparation for next year. Need to find touch and confidence in his leg in a game.

Spot on with these 3. Mahoney or stubbs to the senior list?

Stubbs did play footy this year- for Gws and the Rams during the championships... He did his injury about mid June. His last game for Gws was a ripper... However I don't think that changes what you're saying at all- he needs to find touch and be confident in his leg- which will only come through match practice. The last time I saw Gws play- he was there supporting and was in very good spirits wearing a moonboot and not needing to use the crutches he had--- a sign of a good recovery to that point...

To be honest TFP- I'm not sure what's going to happen re: listings. There's suggestions we might use 5 'live' picks in the draft (thanks Sssshhh) which would mean, in theory, 7 players going straight onto the senior list (including hale and Cheney) but not including any rookie elevations or scholarship listings etc... If this is the case then I am thinking all scholarship players will be rookie listed- it's very hard to tell. I'd actually say Langford is the most likely to go straight to the senior list- but all I can say is that we will have a rookie list chock full of talent if they go there... Anyways- we will know Oct 29th as that is the day scholarship preselections have to be announced! :thumbsu:

Comments:
Backline - I want us to play SChoen at CHB. The kid definitely has it. With Hodge by his side he can either play lockdown or rebounder. I'm struggling to find a spot for Guerra. He has been great for us but is slow as an old mole and seemed to lack a bit of accuracy in his rebounding kicks that he previously had. Oh, and I just realised I've missed out on Stratton!

Centre/midfield:
Bateman and Young are great as wingers when they are running, breaking lines and kicking it to our big guys. Obvious choice. Mitchell, Burgs and Sewell doing all the clearance stuff. If we can improve the ruckwork we'll be decent clearance team again.

Forwards:
Apart from Buddy/Rough/Cyril I'm a little uneasy about our forward line. Lewis can play the role but I'm not sure if he's really suited to it. (unlike Rioli, you won't hear someone say "I wish we had 2 x lewis, one for the midfield and one for the forward line). We need more out of ozzie and I'm not sure who gets the last spot.

Ruck: If we didn't draft Hale to be the number one ruck then we paid too much for him imo. But that's a discussion for a different thread.

Interchange: I think X is really versatile, Savage needs some game time and Guerra would be needed for backline rotations.

Good side. My only changes would be having Murphy over Birchall as Birchall can't defend a wet paper bag, Guerra over Whitecross for a similar reason and swap Whitecross for Shiels on the bench.

Roddy how did Stubbs look size-wise this year? When I saw him training with the hawks last preseason he was skinnier than Xavier Ellis and Josh Thurgood. Looked a long term prospect rather than someone who will play shortly after being drafted. Also thought his kicking didn't look all that natural?? Any thoughts???

RR- i completely hear what you're saying re: his size... he is tallish, around 187cm, and a bit of a skinny lad still- this much is true, but was on the improve up until his injury. There's a lot of opinions about Stubbs, but there is one thing that is true- he is a player with a bit of 'x' factor who does some very surprising things... doesnt look like he should be able to kick a ball far, yet can kick ridiculously clever goals... doesnt look like he can run, but is really quick... can take a good mark as he can leap high... great goal sense- one step bang etc... but more importantly he's pretty fearless and can take a hit(on the footy field). He has played against men with much bigger bodies with the East Coast Eagles- and its just one of those things that you have to get your head around in the sense that he doesnt look like he should be able to do what he does, but he does it anyway...

Here is a link to the match report from, i believe it was, his first game in the seniors with East Coast in 2009 (from the WC website):

http://www.westcoasteagles.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/7155/newsid/80554/default.aspx

Im a big wrap for his potential. He has stalled a little bit this year- its not been the easiest year for him for a variety of reasons... and i think he actually needs to move away from NSW permanently in order to develop both on and off the field. Could he step straight in- my gut feeling is no, there's a few boxes he would have to tick... but- i have constantly found moments where this kid has surprised me- so im not willing to put a ceiling on anything he might be able to achieve.

My team would be

B Murphy - Gilham - Whitex
HB Stratton - Schoe - Gibbo
C Young - Mitchell - Savage
HF Burgoyne - Buddy - Lewis
FF Osborne - Roughy - Breaust
RUCKS Hale - Hodge - Sewell
BENCH Birchall - Renouf/Bailey - Ellis - Bateman/Guerra

EMERG Lisle - Shiels - Cheney
Thoughts guys??

Agree with most of what you said. Could be a few delisted from main list me thinks if we are using 5 live picks and sssh suggests. You think Langford ahead of Mahoney? I really like Mahoney :D. Don't get me wrong i think stubbs is more talented but Mahoney just wants its more the lil go getter we need more of his type in our team.

Bit of debate around our best backline setup.

Gilham
Gibson
Stratton
Schoenmakers
Murphy
Guerra
Birchall
Hodge
Ellis
?????

What's the best back six(seven if we play a loose man) for the team???

WhiteX Gilham Gibson
Stratton Schoey Birchall

Hodge is better utilised in the middle we need better delivery into our forward line our field kicking in the last game was woeful.

top 22 from 2010 (not for next year):

Guerra Gilham Stratton
Ellis Gibson Birchall
Burgoyne Mitchell Young
Lewis Franklin Osborne
Rioli Roughead Peterson
Renouf Hodge Sewell

Skipper Brown Bateman Murphy

Thanks for the detailed response Roddy. He sounds like the rangy type we desperately need. Fingers crossed.

What standard is the league he is playing in in terms of comparable to a victorian league if you know what I mean?

Stratton - Gilham - Gibson
Ellis - Schoenmakers - Hodge

Hale - Mitchell - Burgoyne
Young - Sewell - Birchall

Lewis - Franklin - Bateman
Rioli - Roughead - Osborne

Interchange: Whitecross, Renouf, Guerra
Sub: a raffle

Obviously Rioli, Ellis and Lewis would rotate through the middle. I'd like to see Lewis played more as a midfielder, especially at clearance situations... I seem to remember he was leading the clearance per-minute ratio a few years ago, and would like to see him back in the thick of things... I just hate seeing him play out wide with low tackle-counts each week.

Hodge can go wherever he (or Clarko) pleases, I'd like to see him used more up forward as he's a goal threat, though I suspect he'll be used much more down back in '11 (Pelchin has said as much).

Hale can rest forward to stretch opposition defences, with Bateman, Osborne and Rioli all pushing up the ground/and deep into attack to apply pressure.

Edit: Whilst I feel that's our strongest side I feel we need to start blooding some of the younger players over the course of the year, I'd like to see: Shiels, Savage, Renouf, Shoenmakers, Ellis, Rioli, Whitecross, Peterson and even Lisle, Cheney, Bruest, etc get game time (and those in the first lot there get game time in their preferred positions).

Yes, in my mind i think the future looks alright if stubbs were to be on a list with breust- they're just a bit green compared to hooper and chubbs... but anyway to your question...

The SydAfl is a developing league which has improved out of sight in the last 6 years... there's more money, some big name signings and it is attracting a lot of ex-pat Sanfl players, and Irish players as well... Guys like Jason Saddington, troy luff, nick davis, Nick Fosdike, darryn cresswell all frequent or have frequented the league... But being completely objective the league as a whole is not of a standard perhaps comparable to another major state league like the vfl, wafl, or sanfl... i would say it is on par with the QAFL and may even surpass it if it hasnt already... put it this way- the GWS, GC, Brisbane and sydney are in cahoots to develop what they call a new Northern League for their reserves sides to play in- and they will take 3, if not 4 teams from the current premier league comp in Sydney- East Coast Eagles being one of them. Their aim is to make the northern league of a standard like other state comps, which is better for the development of youngsters coming through etc. So- its good- but its developing, somewhere between a good country league comp- and the vfl state comp- perhaps similar to the league Golden Square play in (maybe TAITA Or Galon could describe the standard of that league?)... lot of athletes tend to get a gig up here so skill level can be mixed... anyways- its on an upward curve but has its deficiencies... not all the clubs are strong etc... the great thing about it is the young players coming through who are embracing the game and bringing something different, and the fact that there are suburban teams like the UTS bats which have developed a massive following (hello GWS- involved yourself with the bats) and forced their way into the sydafl premier league... anyways...

Stubbs played for east coast- they are the powerhouse of the competition, they just won the flag again... they will go to the new northern league etc... him breaking into that team for any amount of time says a lot about the fact he can play... a bit... :thumbsu: that doesnt necessarily guarantee though that the club will take him... despite the fact i think they should :D

Puts it well and truly in perspective Roddy. Thanks again.

Just thinking about 2011 and there are always 1 or 2 or if you are lucky 3 or 4 surprise packets on most sides playing lists.

I am thinking Milne will be one next year and hope that Bruest gets opportunities and they persist with him. Haven't seen anything other than quick glimpses of the Williams we drafted last year and he seems to divide posters on this board whether he is up to it or not (Friar what is your view on him?). Duryea seems to be a Ladson type in that he is quite neat and compact and a football brain but no genuine pace - seems to be one who will be quality at AFL level or won't play a game. Again haven't seen enough to make a call on him. Playing Box Hill development squad all year doesn't fill one with all sorts of hope but we do have a good band of list cloggers on our list filling the Box Hill ones.

Anyone have their own thoughts on who might be a surprise packet in 2011?? Hopefully our pick 19 is plug n play (and a speed mid).

Funny ......how do we look at putting a best 22 together....Do we want a team that on paper is our best OR do we put a side down that includes the players we need to get game time for our club to move Fwd....??
Im looking Fwd...
Cheney...Gilham...Gibson
Stratton..Shoey..Bateman
Young...Mitch...Sewell
Ellis....Buddy...Burg's
Lisle....Rough...Rioli

Renouf..Hodge..Shiels
Bench...Hale..Birchall..Lewis...SUB...Whitecross (can play Fwd or Bck )
Emg...Guerra..Ossie..Savage
For me its time for Clarko to devalope for the future....

Cheney...Gilham...Gibson
Stratton..Shoey..Bateman
Young...Mitch...Sewell
Ellis....Buddy...Burg's
Lisle....Rough...Rioli

Renouf..Hodge..Shiels
Bench...Hale..Birchall..Lewis...SUB...Whitecross (can play Fwd or Bck )
Emg...Guerra..Ossie..Savage

My thoughts are on a similar make up. I look at our list and I do not see us far away but to inject youth and speed in we need to trim and trimming is not always pretty.

Lisle, Schoey, Savage, Shiels, Cheney and Hale need to...must fit into our 22 and be given time to cement. Schoey will come on I am sure. He was a kid who had a good first year and struggled to back it up. I expect Stratton to do similar although he is older and has played against men for longer.

With Buddy, Lisle and Roughy there..poss Hale, no reason why Rough can not push back when their ruckman rests if indeed he does not follow Hale.

B: Stratton - Lisle - Ellis

HB: Gibson - Schoe- Birchall

C: Young - Sewell - Bateman

HF: Rioli - Franklin - Burgoyne

FF: Osborne - Roughead - Lewis

R: Hale - Mitchell - Hodge

Must give games to the kids. Don't care where they play just play em.

FB: Whitecross – Gilham – Stratton

Now that Trade week and delistings are final; this is my 22 for round 1 next year:

FB Gilham Gibson Lisle

HB Stratton Schoe Birchall

CE Bateman Mitchell Young

HF Franklin Rioli Burgoune

FF Hale Roughead Osborne

FOLL Renouf Sewlle Hodge

Interchange: Lewis Ellis Goo
Sub: Bailey
Emergency: Sheils, WX, Murphy, Morton

Play the kids, make the experinced players work for their positions don't just give it to them.

FB: Whitcross Gilham Stratton

HB : Gibson Shoey Hodge

C :Birchall Mitchell Young

HF: Bateman Franklin Rioli

FF: Ellis (Defv Forward) Roughead Osbourne

R: Hale
RR: Sewell
R: Burgoyne

Int: Lewis Renouf Shiels SUB: Savage or Lisle

B: Guerra, Gilham, Gibson
HB: Ellis, Roughead, Stratton
C: Franklin, Sewell, Birchall
HF: Rioli, Schoenmakers, Hodge
F: Whitecross, Hale, Osborne
R: Renouf, Burgoyne, Mitchell
I: Lewis, Shiels, Savage; Sub - Bateman

Franklin to rotate through FF as Hale relieves Renouf in the ruck.

Rioli and Burgoyne to roate between their roles. Hodge to get midfield bursts as required.

Not too bad for a starting line-up, but we obviously wouldn't want to take the sort of injury hits we have over the past two years.

Of the senior players, Guerra and Osborne appear to be under the pump the most, but Cheney still has to do enough to unseat Goo and there's not an obvious replacement for Ossie at this stage.
