Agree on Vickery but Conca was alright I thought.
I didn't mind Conca's game against Port. But I thought he was terrible today. All good man. I hope he rips it up this season. he is a good clearance player.

Two players that concern me greatly and have done for a while - Vickery and Conca.
Both high draft picks and both are the most unnatural of footballers.
Both were very poor today, again.
Can't disagree with this.
The way I see it, when/if they are not in the side we really do not miss them much if at all.
For top 10 picks that is damning...

That is a perfect way to describe it. I have been searching for it ages and you just nailed it. When either of these guys don't play, we don't miss them one bit.

Tough night at selection? Lmao they sit around eating KFC and put in a team sheet from 2009 while cheering on mark willo Williams and Greg mellor's stretch off

Yep it's a fair point. You could swap them for McBean and Miles, a mid-second rounder and a rookie, and probably get improved output.

For picks 6 and 8, it's not good.
But still, we have done well fromt he picks 13-24 mark.

Went to the game today and had a ripper level 2 view. Some points:

  • Decision making. We are still so so far off Hawthorn, Sydney, Freo and Geelong in terms of this aspect of the game. We beat North in most areas of the game today but this is what allowed them to get on top. It's frightening how many times we do a silly handball into trouble, don't use the corridor or quick break when we should....and then use it when we shouldn't. We look like we are trying to force quick play, which is great and necessary but it is frustrating that it seems so unnatural with our boys.
  • Tackling. I don't care about number of tackles....because it's rarely representative of how well you are doing in this area but we had faarrr too many "missed tackles" today. Way too many. It's an area that kills you because this creates overlap all the way down the field if someone misses that initial tackle.
  • Slow start. Can be forgiven during the NAB. Hopefully this isn't an issue round 1.
  • Vickery and Jack. Jack is a freak, and his lack of pace isn't an issue given his cleverness and offensive output. Vickery however is just simply too slow. The combination of the two is a killer. The ball is rebounding from this area too quickly.
  • Rocketing handballs. This is a pet hate of mine, both from playing and watching football. Rarely is it necessary to hammer the ball at someone who is running beside you within a few metres or standing as a sweeper behind the pack etc. Not sure what causes this, whether it is panic or a lack of judgment...whatever....either way....this caused about 5 or 6 spillages and turnovers today unnecessarily.
  • 2 way running. Still not good enough but forgiven until we witness season proper.

Fair points man. But I am continually disappointed with his output considering he was a No 6 pick. I know the order in which you are picked becomes irrelevant, but I can't get past it.

He was a bargain at pick 6 too, club was very happy he was still around. I think he will be a good footballer, but I agree his output at times is not as high as it should be, it just always seems he has a lot in reserve between what he delivers and what he is capable of.

This is usually not a problem in round 1. It's the slow finish.

Next time we meet North Morris has to go back and play on Harvey or Thomas. Different story against Carlton where he is the man to sit on Yarran.

In the battle for the tall forward/2nd Ruck spot Griffiths has pulled away form Vickery. Vickery needs to go back and find form in the VFL.

I think Lloyd has to play, he has not put a foot wrong in the limited time he has got in the last 2 games

We have too many talls in defence when our all Australian full back is playing on Lindsay Thomas. Houli needs more help picking up the crumbs in defence, I thought Vlaustin was poor today but he is too good to leave out round 1. One of Astbury, Grimes, Chaplin or Batchelor probably has to miss out or be able to swing forward to fill Vickery's spot at times during the game. Chaplin or Astbury are the two I would try
