The Rockliff free - it seems to me the umpires got it right. That's what they have been told to do. It's just a shame that the umps, players, coaches and fans are continually having to adjust to new rules. And this isn't just a tweak, it is going to take some serious getting used to.

Malcolm Holmes, Woey, Fletch and a few others including Marco Paparone spoke for the crowd at the after match function and said some interesting things actually,

Apparently Maguire was dropped on form from last week, and so they could get another look at Clarke

Also Redden has a bit of a sore elbow (or shoulder, cant remember 100%) so missed, but should be fine for next week.

Leuey is a bit up in the air, 'a bit tender' were the words woey used, he sounded like he doubted Leuey would be back next week.

Not really new news but he also confirmed that Sam Mayes was carrying a bit of a groin from a full pre-season of running

Malcolm Holmes was very warm and was very strong on how 'angry' the club was at only getting 4 Melbourne games. He joined heartily in a stirring rendition of our club song, led by a very drunk lady on microphone.

Laurie Seraphini was all class.

That is all.

Interesting comments, in particular this one, CarloLion. I've never been a fan of playing all three of Merrett, Goose and Patfull as key defenders, so if Maguire got dropped it does enable us to field a defensive unit with a bit more dash.

Redden had tape on his shoulder while watching the ressies today. Didn't look too serious though.

Yeah I know who was missing, but a smashing is eight to ten goals and we won by six so I don't see a fourteen to sixteen goal turnaround. Anyway, the results in the preseason are so topsy turvy you can't just say because a club fields their best team they will necessarily cruise to a win. It's possible we would have lifted our game too if those star Pies had played.
Yeah of course you can never be 100% certain of a result. But if a full strength Hawthorne plays a full strength Melbourne I know which one I am backing to have a big win.

Collingwood had half a dozen of the best players in the entire league not playing plus a bunch of other senior regulars.

I’m not saying that we could never beat them, but on our performance last night and typical performance of their outs they would have killed us. Probably 11 of the other 17 teams it would have put us away by that time.

Is there another sport that changes the rules so often?

Imagine if cricket changed the LBW rule every second year?

That is pretty interesting, from rookie list smoky to contending for KDP spot in a year is massive. You would imagine Clarke would improve very quickly if they fast tracked him. Big call on Goose though.

Leuey is a bit up in the air, 'a bit tender' were the words woey used, he sounded like he doubted Leuey would be back next week.

Billy doing a pretty good job and getting some valuable game time, so not a massive, massive loss.

Billy going to be a fair player when he grows up. Looks for all the world like he will be able to split packs and take some big grabs a little further down the track. Skills look good, would love him to develop a little more Huddo mongrel and get a little more around the ground. Still absolutely outstanding for a second year kid.

Not really new news but he also confirmed that Sam Mayes was carrying a bit of a groin from a full pre-season of running

It’s our first pick curse I tells ya. Can just one of our super classy outside runners please be available at some point.

This is awesome. Hope this helps in us getting a few members. The good performances mean very little in the grand scheme of things but if it helps build a winning culture and gives our boys some extra confidence it will really help us. Winning next week will also help the bank balance as well.

The bummer is that with the GP in Melbourne, I had a sneaky look for flights etc to go and watch the game......

Not a room available for under $250 a night and the flights were steep as well.....

Hope the players can get some accommodation :D

I wonder if the AFL will be covering the cost?

Now in reality, I don't give a stuff playing at Etihad.

But when is the GABBA available. In less than 24 hours, the Bulls officially wont be able to host the Shield Final. How long does it take to get ready for footy??

Either way, they should have a bit more time to get the game ready for round 2:rolleyes:
More to the point, what are the chances of the weather being available to play cricket in Brisbane??

The concerns on Billy at draft time around his kicking and his ability to be involved around the ground in general play were allayed in my opinion.

That one flat 40m pass into the forward line showed that he is going to be able to impact the game through the middle in open play as well as stoppages.

I disagree. Blair came in from the side to make contact with Rocky, rather than Rocky sliding into Blair.
Furthermore, the contact was above the knee. They need to sort this out really quick before players start deliberately putting their legs and feet in the way to draw a free. As some players do now by ducking to get a high free, at least they are putting themselves at risk, there is a danger that someone will risk a broken leg for that kick and do some damage to their opponent instead.

:(

I just had an nasty mental image of two players lying on the ground. One in agony with a broken leg and the other not moving at all after being hit in the head. I hate seeing other people get hurt!

Never have umpires had such a comprehensive toolkit of nebulously-defined and subjectively interpreted rules with which to influence the result of matches.

The umpire could have played high contact to Rocky or low contact against him and the Giesch would have defended him to the hilt.

Scumpires like Matthew Nicholls will be licking their lips.

Yeah it's forceful contact below the knee though. I could live with that type of free if it were in respect of blokes diving in and in doing so, creating the force - or, in less star wars type terms - in going to ground in a way that creates the 'forceful' hazard to the other blokes legs ie. a chop out. Any force in the Rockliff incident was created by the bloke well and truly second to the ball. It's stupid.

The even stupider part is incidental, forceful contact below the knee on smothers is ok, so it undermines the protection its supposed to provide. In trying to suit everyone, it's flawed every which way.

Why is it that in the post match or formal inteview area you cannot hear the questions being asked only the responses? Surely a producer should have twigged to this....... Probably not the place for this winge but I wanted to listen to last nights coaches wrap and could only hear Vosses responses and guess at the context of the question or who they wre discussing by the answers.
Annoying to say the least...
Good game last night, a confidence booster on the road of success

They are using a unidirectional mic that only picks up the sound directly in front of it. The media want this because the questions will never make the news so they want as few other sounds as possible.

They could just put in an omnidirectional mic for the web stuff. They may figure it out at some point.

Quite a few journos asking questions about us being robbed of a home final. Andy Maher (Carlton Supporter), Damien Barrett, Nick Smart, Mike Whiting, Greg Davis...

..and the guy on SEN at about 2.30am (couldn't sleep, too hot)..he was quite firm with a Pie who rang in saying they had all their top players out etc...Yes said host, but you have nothing to concern yourself with, your team is not in a rebuilding stage, are at the top of their game, and we all know that a full strength Pies would most likely beat the Lions etc but.......

...whereas, Lions have been rebuilding, had some shocker years, have been playing all their youngsters in that time, have now come out and are the ONLY team to have come through this NAB series undefeated which is a huge boost for their young team.....a boost that the Pies do not need..

..and as such, the Lions have earnt the right to a home final.......which they are not getting!

I am guessing we will try to field our side for Round 1 next week which means Redden will come in. I will be particularly interested to see if Goose comes back in and if Clarke and Michael remain in the side.

Another thing on that free was the way the Collingwood players all went into back to defend as we all went to attacking positions. No player thought it was a Collingwood free.

Would have been even 'better' if Rocky had given away 50 metres because he didn't give the ball straight to the other guy!
