Nab Rd 1 vs Swans - Game Day Thread

I know the NAB Cup means nothing but I'm pretty disappointed with the effort tonight.

Bower was clearly our best. Robbo was lively but not consistently. Yarran showed some good signs. One thing is pretty clear though... we have no option up forward.

I liked Yarran's effort towards the end of the game when he left the Sydney guy for dead.
His first quarter effort to turn two Swans defenders who were right on him inside out and then slip past them was more exciting.

I thought he was gone, but he just found a gap somewhere and waltzed right through it.

I know we're not giving our hand away at this stage, managing workloads, experimenting, etc.....but I'd rather see Kreuze play in the guts.....one of his biggest pro's is having an extra midfielder at the contest. Hendo/Waite and Hammer up forward.

Big No. 8 is a ruckman that goes forward.

Look, tonight was an almighty skull****, lotta things didn't go right, we were playing the scrum Nazi's, which is hard to guage against.

Several of the much vaunted mids were disappointing, the backs battled on.

Forward line is, um.....an opportunity for anyone who wants it, Yazz was slick and worked well with JG in the first half. Throw EB in, and they work well together.

Lost by under 3 goals, and couldn't have played any worse. OK by me.

Rucks looked ok on the tap work.

Yarran was super impressive tonight, just has that smooth, effortless class about him.

Also impressed with Davies. Although he didn't get many possessions, when he did he looked composed and has a really nice kicking action. He's a good size and could be a real surprise packet from the draft.

Very disappointed with Brock tonight, you'd have thought he'd be out to impress in his first match (even if it is the NAB Cup) particularly when you think he finished first in the time trials. But we all know he's better than that and he'll improve as he continues to have decent hit outs against real opposition. He has to get used to the Carlton style, learn how his team mates play etc.

A lot of work needs to be done on the forward line, long bombs into the 50 is not the way to go it allowed the Swans defenders to easily swat and sweep the ball away (which most other defences will easily do). Ratten and co may need to look at a real spot up short kick approach to F50 entries and use the speed of Henderson, Fisher etc to take some easy marks on the lead.

Wont take to much out of the game, only NAB so ppl stop hammering away.

Very dissapointed by Mclean, both before and during the game,

Yarran finally showed something

Hendo will take time

Warnock will better with the run

But the most important thing I will take away is, NO INJURIES.

Look forward to the next practise match, wouldnt mind seeing Levi having a run

I prefer Hampson up forward and Kreuzer in the ruck.

Yes, Kreuzer had no impact up forward today but how many times was the ball kicked to him? And of those times how many of them were actually kicked to advantage? I wouldn't judge the Kreuzer forward experiment or our forward line at all based on tonight's game.

Hampson is not a forward and does not have much of an idea to do when he's up there. He runs fast but can't take a mark. He jumps high but only puts one hand up when he tries to take a grab. He can only run in straight lines, can't tackle and isnt too great below his knees. Hampson's only spot in our side is in the ruck and right now i've got him 4th in line for one of those spots. Unless we have some injuries I foresee alot of VFL for Hampson in 2010.

Can you please change teams? :thumbsu:

joint the club the doggie haven't had a foward line in about 20 years lol!

We got our hands on it first, but we put exactly where the Swans wanted it, which to me suggests smarter positioning and better body work from the Swan rucks. Rucking is more than just beating the other guy's hands.

It is still very early days and it's only NAB cup so very hard to tell from this game but it's pretty scary when we only have to marks inside 50 in a half of football. I know we're not at full strength and Sydney's style of play made us look worse, but this is a little scary.

There are some positives to take out of the game as well:
- Yaz stepped up and showed some very good pace
- Robbo played pretty well, showed how good he will be this year
- Lucas is showing some good signs already
- Murphy, Waite, Simpson, Betts, Walker and Houlihan will (most likely) be playing in Round 1
- The game means nothing
- It was a good chance for Ratts to try a few things out.

LOL.

If we didn't kick it to Kreuzer's advantage, what makes you think we kicked it to Hampson's advantage?

We rotated the four rucks with Henderson, yet you're expecting Hampson and Kreuzer to grab the game by the throat.

Everyone Herald-Sun reader is out in force.

That ain't my tall guys fault.
We got clean first hands every time, get your little blokes underneath, reading the play.
You little blokes sort it out.

You got it gifted underneath tonight.

Nice to see you can say some things that alot of Carlton supporters are too bloody soocky to say, Thanks mate.

Geez, the post fev era is looking bleak...

Alll those who celebrated his trade cause it helps our brand, status in the community etc etc...enjoy this FOOTBALL!!!
THREAD HIGHLIGHT!!!

Fev is gone as he was cancer: get over it fool

My Observations:

Blacktown Oval: small crowd, Blues supporters were quite vocal
blankets and chairs on the hill is great for families
beautiful evening, really felt like it was in the bush
funny sounding siren and shocking sound system
not enough facilities, surely will get better in time
very friendly
lots of people telling other the rules
worth the treck

Blues:
(my perspective from center wing opposite the stand)
1st half: Griggs off the ball work was tough
Bower great against Goodes
Hadley's second efforts were good
Fisher made space on the wing but was too slow
Brock was too slow also but tough against Kirk a couple of times
Robbie's positioning at the throw ins wwas exceptional but no-one moving in the right directions/blocking

second half: Scotland and Gibbs were good
roving to our ruck work not good enough
Swans rebounded way too easily

Overall: Disgraceful disposal
NO TALK
played the boundary line ever bloody time
no answer to the Swans rebound
Carrots and Bower my BOG,s
Two below par teams playing a scratch match
Dissapointed
