Analysis Naitanui - someone taught him how to take a mark!

I reckon like others have said, he's changed his approach to taking contested marks. In the past he was standing 20 metres behind the pack and trying to come over the top, yesterday he seemed to be coming through the pack and taking them from the front instead.
Less chance of a career ending injury. Tbh as special as the over the top pack marks are im always dumping my daks when he comes down. Ill settle for better positioning and using strength any day!!

I agree Simmo and the other coaches have probably told him to use his strength and size to his advantage.

He needs to suppress the urge to showcase his leap and use his 1 on 1 strength.

In the past he will wait back and only get involved if he gets a free run at the ball. Maybe because he would be too buggered to lead.

Imagine him on a lead though, once he gets his fitness right. Would be unstoppable :thumbsu::cool:

Simmo has said a few times now that he doesn't really care if he doesn't mark it because it usually means no-one else does. It's his 1%er and explosiveness around the contest that gives him the edge.

I was of the same opinion for years, "don't thump it when you're at the front of the contest", "don't thump it when you're the tallest one there", "oh great, he dropped another easy one".

How can you be so tall and not be able to do speckies on just about everyone else.

But he has stepped it up this year, massively in my opinion so I wont bash on him. He is doing much much better in '16

Sitting equal fourth (and one behind equal second) for contested marks in the AFL this year.
Only Lynch (who is a freak), Hawkins and J Riewoldt ahead of him.

I wonder how much developing Nic has left in him?

Would love for him to keep improving his positioning and knowing when to drop back in defence.

I'm off the belief he will keep learning right till the end of his career .....it's reading the game that allows him to mark and punch not his athletic ability ...yes this helps

But he knows where the ball will go most of the time

He really has improved this year with his marking and 4 1/4 performances this year.

And yet this is close to his least effective football for the team since 2011

NN's ruckwork is what makes our midfield competent and our side a contender.

2 or 3 extra possessions and a couple of extra contested marks whilst nice - are negligible in the bigger picture

I wish he got back to 10 possessions and no marks and started dominating on ball again.

Just noticed this on the AFL player ratings twitter. Really shows how dominant Nic has been this year.

Yet Max Gawn and Goldstein are getting all the All Australian Hype, both of them spend heaps more time on the ground. I watched Max Gawn the other day, did not impress me at all. He hits them to an area but is nowhere near as accurate as nic is. It is amazing Nic is not averaging much less in hitouts considering the massive difference in stoppages they attend.

Nic could be more effective in boundary throw ins because most of the time the throw ins are fairly short he could use his major weapon his speed and be in front and take it on the full and give it off to a player running past. The only trouble you can see he is worried about getting pinged for HTB because they only have to touch him and it is adjudged HTB.
