Ordinarily, it probably would be. But this year it is very much a seller's market. If we were to contemplate trading Jonsey, we could definitely get over the odds for him. A speculative pick 30 something wouldn't get it done.

I guess it depends on how the week plays out. If there's very little movement, Melbourne might be keen to get a strong position in the draft by adding a (relative to the rest of the draft) highish pick in, to have 3 within the top 40.

On the other hand, if there's a reasonable amount of movement, the picks might not be rated so highly.

i disagree with ordinarily, people forget Jones has shown a lot over his short career (bar this year) and as he is 22 with 100 games experience i would still expect a 1st rounder for him, maybe early second rounder at the least e.g. 17-22

No, you're right PM. I think anything above pick 25 for Jonsey would be us getting bent over. I hope we keep him. I'm sure we will.

yeah i hope so, i still think he will have a place in our team, especially now jmac has gone

What about Essendon's second rnd pick and Dempsey.

no need for dempsey, he isn't great, and we already have davey for run out of defence + grimes... also davey has like 100x dempseys disposal

I was thinking that could possibly allow us to move Grimes more into the middle or Davey more forward. I think Dempsey could also play the defensive forward role. I think he could give us more flexibility than Jones.

You do realise that is a first rounder in this draft?

Pykie is a knowledgeable poster and spot on with most of his comments in this discussion.

He has probably over-rated Watson a touch and has definitely over-rated Prismall.

Prismall has no hurt factor in his kicking and is defensively poor - especially his defensive running.

I think that Jones would be an upgrade on prismall.

Nathan Jones is exactly the same type......

His kicking is deplorable, and he has turned into a "nothing" midfielder, he's neither good inside, and he certainly isn't an outside midfielder at AFL level.

Melbourne's midfield isn't at the point where they are able to offload players that would walk into any sides 22.

If Melbourne are able to offload him, buyer beware.....

At any point, I'm yet to see this reported, and Jones is one that would strike me as a coach favourite.

Getting temporarily dropped doesn't equate to surplus to the teams needs...

Extremely inaccurate. Anyone who watched Nate this year will tell you his kicking improved out of sight, especially over distance.

The reason Jones's name is being bandied around is because it's rumoured that he doesn't get along with Bailey and he doesn't like the role that he plays within our structure.

Fact is that he wasn't dropped from the side and in fact played all 22 games.

The club won't let him go.

I don't mean to nit-pick here, but he actually was dropped for the Sydney game in round 19 and came in as for a sick Col Sylvia. I don't think he was very pleased about it either.

You are right in that the club won't let him go.

Yeah, I think Jones has improved his kicking to a great degree, and although it is by no means elite, I think 'deplorable' would be far too harsh a word to describe it. He also has the ability to kick long goals as well, which is a very handy attribute for a midfielder to have in his toolkit.

As others have mentioned, I think Jones' major issue relates to believing he is more than he is. He tries to do too much with the football, and as a result of this, finds himself getting caught far too often. He needs to realise his limitations and realise that he is a role player, rather than a star.

Pykie

The question is who is the better player Jones or Prismall ?

I couldn't see prismall getting a game for melbourne ?

There's a fair degree of onanism regarding the Dees midfield. promising young kids is fine; but the fact is Moloney's still their best & JMac & Bruce weren't far from it. If they lose Jones on top of MacD & Bruce, I think they'll cop a few physical pummellings next year & a lot will rest on that Eric kid to offer some protection.

Bruce will be around for at lerast another 12 months, not that he's a midfielder.

Our midfield is fine, hence why we have the luxuary of debating the prospect of trading Jones.

Fact of the matter is the Bombers are the ones that need to stop the pummellings, and accordingly are the only side Jones would be assured of a regular game moving forward.

agreed. only sticking point is what does essendon offer to get the dees to release a very good young midfielder. granted to you have them in spades, but jones is that little bit ahead in terms of experience and an ideal type to have around sylvia, scully, trengrove etc etc.

Everything I have heard about him says he is a good bloke around the club.

We have an overabundance of midfielders at the moment. Would hate to see him go as I love how hard he is at the footy, but if a trade came up for a tall forward type - we would jump at it.

He'll be superfluous to Melbourne's requirements in 12-24 months.

He will indeed, and hence the dilemma. I'm sure he see's the writing on the wall. If he requests a trade we will potentially expose Scully, Trengove, Gysberts and McKenzie prematurely but if he wants out what are we to do.

He's not worth P8, but is worth more than P29 (your second round). As I said earlier Jones & P12 for P8 and P29, basically we upgrade our first selection and a second rounder.
